My choice definitely goes to the Insta ace pro 2, especially because the camera has a flip-up screen, which is very nice to be able to film at low angles without having to sink to your knees. I also like to film in twilight/night shots. (shopping streets etc.) Battery life is less important to me, then take an extra battery, simple right? Who films for 4 hours in a row. I’ve shot PLENTY of night footage on my Action 5. It looks great, with the right settings dialed in. No jitter, clean footage, all manual, no super night needed. Just careful exposure. I’m a professional photographer so I dial in very careful settings and the footage almost matches my Pocket 3. It’s insane. The Ace Pro 2 is wonderful but the Action 5 is also great in low light. IF you dial in pro settings.

I definitely took a more “average consumer” approach to this comparison since the majority of action camera users are looking for the best image with least effort, overall all three cameras are impressive in terms of what they can do!

@ How To Get Less Jitter With Your Action 5 Pro Jitter has little to do with bitrate (bitrate helps with detail and other things). Jitter has to do with slow shutter speed. Action cameras (all of them) use aggressive EIS (electronic image stabilization) which fights with the shutter speed to create stability. This jitter and ghosting happens in bright light also (but it’s harder to see.) Cameras like the AcePro series and the Action 5 use Ai to offset this. But you are FAR better off dialing in manual settings. Here is what I am finding best: 4K 30 (30 lets in more light than 60), EIS at Rocksteady (not +), Shutter 1/100-1/8000 (this is very important, you can also use quadruple your frame rate to 30FPS at 1/120, 60 at 1/240, etc. (FORGET the 180 degree rule with this camera, and with all action cameras), Texture at -2 (-1 is ok too), Noise Reduction at -1 or -2. In super night mode, you can’t adjust ISO but you can adjust these settings and should if you want better footage. In normal, all these settings apply but make sure ISO is 100-25600 at night, 100-3200 in sunlight and 100-12800 at dusk. Shutter at four times frame rate (30FPS 1/120, 60FPS 1/240) or 30 and 1/100-1/8000 60 1/200-1/8000. I would make FOV standard but you could use wide. Color is dealers choice, normal 10 bit or DLOG 10 bit (which you’ll have to grade in post or in the app). Set EV to -0.3, -0.7 or -1. I like -0-3 - 0.7 in most settings. In very bright light with the quadruple shutter rule, use a Neutral Density filter. Out of the box this camera is not even close to as good as it is with these settings dialed in. In fact, pre-firmware it was pretty disappointing. Now it’s MUCH better but jitter will still happen. It happens on my pocket 3 far less, because it’s a gimbal. So hold steady as well and turn on sport mode. These are highly finicky and specialized cameras. You have to manually tweak everything depending on the settings. Hope that helps! Mountain biking in the golden hour during autumn through the forests, where I'd get blown out highlights and shadows would seem a tough call between the Ace Pro 2 and Osmo Action 5, vs my Hero 9 which I'm looking to replace. Tempted to go with the DJI because it's a lighter overall package for a chin mount and internal storage may be handy for when I forget my SD card, but the AI chips on the Insta 360 will bring out that dusk performance a bit better whilst retaining the image stabilisation. I'm still waiting until somebody does an evening ride comparison between the 2. Thanks but no thanks GoPro, glad to have had you from Gen 1 in 360p SD, 8 and 9, but it's time to move on.

What were the sharpness settings on the cameras? I think DJI tends to oversharpen so have seen reviewers set it to low, and the AP2 tends to be soft so have seen reviewers set it to medium... then they look more similar... just curious of your settings... great video BTW...

Im actually confused of choosing a simple but cinematic with wide angle cam My contenders are: Insta360 x4 Ace pro 2 Dji action 5 pro Dji pocket 3 My usage are 1. Cinematic real estate indoor videos 2. Travel 3. eveyday use for architectures project What i need: - smooth stabilization, indoor some low light situation - great hdr sensor cuz low light room with bright window usually the case - super wide angle for indoor use What i think it can work for me - so EIS usually works bad in low light situation but i found using gyroflow with my avata 2 can work great cuz it uses motion data Thats why im thinking of dji action 5 or ace pro 2; they both can use gyroflow - im actually also interested in X4 360 camera cuz it has WIDE angle lens= better EIS But it dosent able to use gyroflow and bad lowlight sensor and not too great for making cinematic - it got me thinking! What if i use gyroflow with dji action 5 pro / ace pro 2 so i can get better stabilization, no jerky EIS in low light, wnd also wider angle Please help me on this 😁

You haven't mentioned about 8x7 aspect ratio in GoPro, tak makes huge advantage for those who edit action footage (bike, swim etc) in post. For me GoPro is nr 1 for all daylight scenarios, especially for action scenarios.

I bought the Osmo action 5 pro because of the ease of use with the Dji mini microphone that also has insane battery life. The mini microphone only weighs 15 grams and has a longer battery life and reach than the Dji mic 2 , the only difference between the Dji mini and the Dji mic 2 is the mic 2 has onboard recording.but the osmo 5 has microphone backup on board

If they had 10-bit, I think they would be an easy choice for best recommendation based on what I’ve seen, but you’re right if you’re someone who’s going to color grade a lot and plan on pushing your image pretty hard (🙋🏻‍♂️), the Osmo Action 5 takes the lead for those use cases!

@@DavidZhou I agree... the lack of 10-bit on the Ace Pro 2 and the ability of the DJI Action 5 Pro to use 2 DJI mics at once sways the choice towards the Action 5 Pro in my view. Not that the Ace Pro 2 is a bad camera... far from it... I think it looks very good... but in good light all 3 action cams are honestly very good... so it's the features that in the end separate them and I think the feature set in this case gives the edge to the Action 5 Pro. Low light rules out the GoPro and then it's a toss up between the other 2... with feature sets being the final decision makers imo because image quality between those 2 are close enough that it's subjective at best as to which is the better camera.

Ive been a fan of Insta360 because of the Ace Pro, Go 3, X3, and X4 along with their auto edit software that makes my life so much easier but have been thinking about getting the Action 4 and no 5. Maybe I'm wrong as I haven't seen every "low cost" camera out there... but my feeling is that the gap from the BIG 3 to the other no-name competitors is fairly large. I'd keep in mind firmware updates/warranty/customer support etc as well... and my guess would be that the Big 3 (even though they all have their faults and detractors) are likely well above the no-name brands in those categories.

I came here because I lost my Ace pro last week due to a mount failure 15m under a waterfall. I got a deal on a action 5 for $280 but wanted the acepro 2 because I loved my ace pro. The action is here and its smaller. I can't complain per se but I'm a creature of habit and I want what I had even if I don't use it ie 8k and the free frame. 3 questions: How come the field of view on the action 5 is significantly smaller than the other 2 cameras? Even the gopro! Does Rocksteady shrink the FOV that much? I was considering the Dji Action 5 over the Ace Pro 2 cause of its lighter weight. Do you feel a significant difference in the weight, especially for Pov shots? Does it get inconvenient to keep the big Insta camera attached to your helmet for long periods of time for example? It's very tempting between the Ace Pro 2 and Action 5. Re: FOV, in the round 1 comparisons, I think when I started shooting I didn’t realize it wasn’t set to the widest possible FOV, when set to the widest all three cameras have about the same FOV. (Except for in slow-motion, the GoPro was able to be set to one setting wider while on the other two it wasn’t available) I’ve worn the Ace Pro 2 on my head with a headband for 20 minutes and I didn’t find it to FEEL that much heavier, but I think it’s going to be a personal thing. The Ace Pro 2 does feel heftier for sure, but not in a way that felt negative to me in my opinion. Hope that helps, just one guys opinions 😁

I went with the DJI Action 5 Pro - also coming from a GP9. The battery life is amazing and low light is excellent. Just a tad behind the AP2. Super night is a bit overdone so I tend to shoot in normal video. The low-light performance is excellent in normal video with just a bit of tweaking. The A5Pro should keep getting better as DJI pushes out firmware updates. If you can swing the adventure bundle, the additional batteries and charger are great.

It's a tough choice but hopefully the different points shown in the video helps get you towards and answer. Re: your question, color correction is similar on both, especially when shooting in log, and I would shoot in log anytime I'm trying to cut it into a "cinematic vlog" or something that feels more produced, where as if I know I'm just recording it for memories or just uploading to Instagram stories, I would just use the base color profiles. But everyone's use case is different!

But the Ace Pro 2 is useless for vlogging, the specs state a minimum focus distance of 37cm but reviews of the camera have showed people's faces out of focus and one guy tested the camera and found the real minimum focus distance is about 1 metre. This makes it useless for anyone wanting to hand hold the camera facing themselves and even using a selfie stick if the selfie stick isn't aat least 1 metre long you'll be out of focus.

IMO if you vlog a lot, I’d go with an Osmo Pocket 3, just so much more suited for the job while still maintaining a compact form factor. On the close focus issue, I think you’re right and I think it attributes to why I found some of the shots soft, but I felt that all three of the cameras were relatively soft on my face during the audio quality test portion.

I agree with most of your points, but I feel like the standout feature of the AP2-the audio quality-was a bit overlooked. For me, the audio performance alone has made me look past some of the softer footage issues. While the wind guard isn’t quite on par with a deadcat, it still does an impressive job. It provides just enough wind resistance, allowing the wind reduction and voice enhancement modes to operate smoothly without making the audio sound overly processed, like typical Bluetooth-level quality. I have the DJI Mic 2, but realistically, what am I going to clip it to when I come out of the water, dry the camera, and realize I’m shirtless on the beach? In those moments, I’d much rather rely on the AP2’s in-camera audio, dry it off, reattach the wind guard, and speak directly to the camera. I’m just not comfortable bringing any non-waterproof gear around water, especially a wireless mic. For beach and water situations, the Action 5 simply can’t compete with the AP2 for audio quality. When I do need to use the Mic 2, it’s paired with my Pocket 3 or another main camera.

I don’t own the Ace Pro 1 (plus I was trying to compare the latest 3 action cameras) and in the audio test you can see the difference in close focusing distance and I think they all look similar, maybe the AP2 is a bit softer in terms of close focus?

I also wanted your opinion on whether you've noticed a loss of detail in Action 5 on certain textures during the recording. While some say the Action 5 Pro appears oversharpened, it seems to lack clarity and depth on rough textures such as gravel, concrete roads, structures, and occasionally vegetation. For some reason, DJI smooths out these rough textures compared to Action 4, which maintains sharper detail on rougher surfaces. What do you think-am I going crazy? Do you think the highlights of certain textures can be fixed in the settings or in a software update?

There is now a high bit rate setting with the latest firmware. I have OA4 an OA5, there is no difference in detail, OA5 renders clearer detail. What I do think is a problem is the tone mapping where there is a reduction in contrast in the mid tones. This can be confused for lack of detail. My solution is to shoot D-log. Future firmware will change the not so nice hdr look

@@17cream Thanks for the feedback and assistance! I’m still committed to Action 5 as my top choice. However, I’m disappointed with the image quality comparison in the video, as the sharpness appears the worst and most distorted of the three cameras. As you noted, the HDR tone mapping creates an unnatural, muddy effect, with some details like clouds looking either under or over-sharpened. Could this negatively impact ski footage and overall detail? Is there potential for firmware updates to improve sharpness and color grading balance as well as the other cameras? I’m not into color grading myself.

@@Untied_Shoelace just a thought 🤔 are you setting a minimum shutter speed? To low shutter speed can introduce blur and perceived loss of detail?

​@@17cream No, I haven't even got the camera yet. This is my inference based on the DJI forums, a lot of comparison videos I watched including this video, mount media, etc. Hope that answers your question!

My choice definitely goes to the Insta ace pro 2, especially because the camera has a flip-up screen, which is very nice to be able to film at low angles without having to sink to your knees. I also like to film in twilight/night shots. (shopping streets etc.) Battery life is less important to me, then take an extra battery, simple right? Who films for 4 hours in a row. But thanks for the clear honest explanation.
