Hello Russ, thanks for another great video. I am a 73 years young boy from Sweden and I have learnt a lot during the last year from your very informative videos. I bought my first drone, a Mavic Pro one year ago, sold it and now planning to buy a Mavic 2 Zoom. Looking forward to see and learn more from your future videos.

Thank you for the IMU Calibration. I first noticed a need for “something” when the Pro would drift ever so slightly to starboard. Even when I watched my use of the right stick carefully, the aircraft still drifted even if but a minute amount. Next, I noticed when using RTH, (yes, I use RTH, I like it, and yes, I can fly by the map insert) that the aircraft wouldn’t land exactly where it left terra firma from. Close enough, but increasingly becoming less precise. Today, flew out to a lighthouse over water (it does work, keep your altitude at 50’ or more) and I received a rather stern warning of high winds, and to land ASAP. This took place at sunrise, there is no wind at sunrise! Incidentally, I was receiving wind warnings more and more frequently. These circumstances are your proverbial “sign”. Best to heed them if you are attached to your aircraft. Performed an IMU Calibration. Lifted off, gained about a hundred feet in altitude, and 25 yards away from home point, and executed a RTH. The aircraft landed to within an inch or so (by visual reference) from the takeoff point. That’s what it did brand new out of the box. So, if others are experiencing these issues, I would proffer that 51 Drones is onto something here. Also, to ensure my table was level, I bought a $4 level from a major home store. The level checks both axes simultaneously. I keep that level in the carry case in the event I need it out in the field.

Holy Cow Russ - I have been watching ever since last Christmas when the Mrs. got me a Pro - Great lady. Lately my drone has been acting up and I was concerned - I had a fly away and within 5 seconds it was going away from me like a spoiled brat in the store. It took off and I wasn't touching the controls. I saw it was dropping down near trees and I hit the RTH !!!! Thank God it stopped! I remember you always saying " Take the time to do the RTH. I even do it when I do a battery change. So the next 5 or so take off's I didn't go over 10 off the ground. I noticed when it would hover, it would slowly rise a ft. or two. It was the IMU ! Thank you so much for the tip to the recalibrate IMU...… it saved the drone but I am still gun shy and take my time when I launch.

Mr. Russ, You certainly lead the pack in quality tutorials for people like myself - a true newbie. Concerning your comments at the end of your video about what computer to use, I am a advocate of using a desktop with a large monitor. I have a Dell Desktop with a 27" monitor for viewing. I found out that many of the laptop viewing screens are not color corrected with any consistency. I learned this after trying to do post processing of still images with Adobe Lightroom. Try it yourself, Russ and see what a difference a large screen in Image quality.

As always, a lot of great information here. Also, remember, if you go to another location that is a good distance from where you normally fly you may have to calibrate the compass also due to the magnetic declination change from one location to another. We have to do that all the time with our M210. Even just a couple of counties away will require it.

Confidence... That's my man! I crashed my drone (M Air) and I think the IMU was the problem. For a small amount, DJI sent me a new one and It fly much better. With my first, I was getting the motor and high wind errors messages. None with the new one. After my first crash, I was very insecure but with the new one, confidence is coming back. :) Take care Russ

Thanks Russ - Great video as always. I had a cheap copy of the Mavic Pro as my starter drone and had it just zoom away and lodge itself 20 metres up a tree on its very first flight. It took a week to get the equipment together and get it out of the tree! It did that when I pressed the RTH button (I have no idea where it thought its home was?)! I fully agree with your comments about being able to rely on RTH and precision landing when you are new to Drones, as that gave me so little confidence in the Drone, I boxed it, put it in my loft and saved up to buy a real Mavic Pro. It was such a relief to see my new Mavic go through the correct and expected motions when I pressed the RTH button and to have it fly down to exactly where it came from. It meant that I could get on with learning how to fly it without wondering if I needed tree climbing equipment again ....

fyi- i'm totally new to drones so what I do to learn is use the RTH feature and when it is about 5ft. landing I simply cancel the landing and take over to personally land the drone. So far it works for me and it gives me practice on landing. The RTH feature is great in my opinion to at least get it in the line of site and very near where I launched.

Hi Russ. Brilliant opening scene, really demonstrates the point. Just a small point regarding your comments about leaving the props on during IMU calibration, I think DJI advise removal as a safety precaution in the event of some sort of “hiccup “ . IF the drone did fire up it would damage itself at the very least. For the sake of x seconds removing and replacing the quick fit props I would always advise caution. I also advise starting the controller first before the drone so you have control should it suddenly decide to take off. Don’t mean to preach but some youngsters may experience problems and it’s always good to minimise risks. Thanks for taking the time to make the video, looking forward to the next. Take care and catch you later.Peter

Just a thought: If you use a landing pad such as seen here the pad should have a homing beacon that the drone looks for which would no require calibration. The drone would be programmed to land on the beacon. Now there would have to be a system on the drone that can detect the homing beacon signal but how much extra would that cost? With that landing pad only the drone camera is used and night flying might be a difficult thing to compensate for especially in total darkness or where light is barely visible.

Good refresher video. I suppose you were lucky in your confidence that you wouldn’t break the garage door windows, too. BE CONFIDENT. Also, your introduction showed you in a stand of trees, I didn’t know you had trees up there in the Northern plains as your previous video’s have been in a flat, stark environment sometimes in snow. The ones near railroad tracks I supposed were to point you in the direction of getting the quad home if your RTH fails- have fun. I enjoy your presentations

Good video! I did the the same thing the first time I calibrated my first dji drone. I can think of a few situations where precision landing would be necessary. Even though I'm pretty confident in my ability to fly home and land, it would be nice for the Mavic 2 to do it too with precision. Hope that update comes out soon.

Hello Russ, As always I continue to learn from your videos! You were my first drone channel I found and started watching. I purchased a Mavic Pro after watching several of your videos. I am hoping I can move up to the Pro 2 sometime next year, fixed income. Again thank you so much for keeping us with the "older" technology in mind for your videos. I would love to see one on your PC. I currently have an older Toshiba Qosimo, an older I7 and have yet to try to edit videos. Still trying to find the right software at a fair price. Don't think I could continue to spend a monthly charge for Premier Pro. Loved your blooper reel as well. You make things fun, entertaining, and informative. PS btw, I had my Congressman call me yesterday on the newly passed FAA Bill. He was looking for more information and my thoughts on it. I feel he was impressed on my knowledge on the bill, a big thank you for that as well. He said he would keep me informed as the new procedures are being set up and would try to fight for us hobbyist. 👍🏻 that’s my left thumb because my right got in the way of a prop after my drone started drifting and forced to catch due to not calibrating and it’s friggin sore . Just wish I’d of watched this beforehand

I think you're right with the precision landing. It should always be there and I hate that it's not there for the Mavic 2 and I really hope they will add it. I have even more problems: The drone sees the dronepad as an obstacle when I try to land and drifts away from it all the time

That IMU, Compass, and Vision positioning calibrations are so important. Also, it would have been great if you dunked the ball. That was cool though getting the ball in on the first shot.

I loved this! I need all the info I can get to determine my next purchase. I want a phantom, so even though you are mavic, it helps me understand why to do preflight checks, and make sure I am correctly flying. I will be purchasing early 2019. So if you have any insight, let us knot.

Hello Russ. Great video and a ton of great information. I always watch your videos along with some of the other big time you tubers. I am only writing this as to because you mentioned on the precision landing that if you were in a boat and you needed it to return and land where the drone took off or if you lost your controller into the water at least you could have the drone back. Ok but if it takes of from the boat and your moving from said set RTH where is that drone going? Back to the spot it took off from right or very near and the boat isn’t there! I would think that there is an option to set RTH a location or the controller as you are or know you will be moving! I know you covered a lot of information and sometimes we well I know I can’t think of everything. Just don’t want someone to think hey I set it and it didn’t return back to the spot it took off from “the boat” but it’s moved. Anyways I hope this made sense to everyone and you. Keep up all your hard work as it is very informative to all of us even more experienced pilots out there. Thank you.

Yep. But if you listen to the video again, I stated that if I launch from shore. I don't launch from the boat any more. I only launch from the ground, on shore. Thanks

51 Drones yes I caught that. I wasn’t referring to you in general but for the new pilots or the uniformed. Some of us need special labels like the caution contents are hot on a coffee cup from McDonald’s. I had told some one that I recalibrate my compass before each flight when I change locations and Imu calibration if I travel more than 100 miles from my home. Or after 10 separate flights. They told me I was wrong and that I was at high risk for fly away or an accident. That I should read the owners manual. DJI says to calibrate only when prompted. I think you hit the nail on the head when you explained when and why you should calibrate. In your opinion am I wrong for trying to be safer in my opinion. Or should just fly without worry and trust in my equipment to prompt me when I need to calibrate? Sorry that was long but would also like your take as well. Thank you in advance. Dustin

Ha! Caution - HOT! Lol. I think you are doing it the right way. No harm at all in regular calibration, especially if you are flying from a new location.

Russ did you notice on your Mavic 2 calibration if you go to compass it only shows one compass is that the case or is it a bug in DJ GO 4 as I thought all DJI new Drone had 2

What is not often mentioned on Precision landing is that it’s a very nice feature to help protect your drone…. From engine / motor damage.! The Mavic’s electric motors sit low to the ground. It’s important to use a landing pad to help keep the motors clean. It’ kills me to see people takeoff/land from the dirty ground, beach sand, dirt on driveways, grass, etc. One little grain of dirt/sand can hurt your motor. Precision landing is amazing for landing on your small landing pad. For the iMU’s, I think the main problem is that people turn on the Drone, and walk the drone over to a takeoff location. IMU need a stable startup period to calibrate. One does not want to move your drone during this startup period. Modern aircraft require a few minutes for their IMU’s to calibrate before the aircraft can move. I would think the same general principle applies.

I know this is an older video, However I have a question. I have a Mavic Pro 2 with the smart controller. I have had no issues with it until yesterday. They told me to update for precision landing. So I did like normal. However now it tells me to calab. my IMU. No problem, I do that it says it is successful. Then when I restart my drone it tells me again IMU calab. needed. So I repeated this like 20 times. Would you happen to know what I should do? Love you channel.

I have mentioned in another video of yours that I don't think its a big deal. With that being said they should have included it and will eventually add it along with a few other features mentioned in the manual. In my humble opinion I think they rushed the release (even with the delays). I have both a zoom and a 2 and a spark. I had to send my zoom in for warranty due to pixelation and range issues. They sent me a different drone. I have been reading lots of posts about pixelation, gimbal and gimbal ribbon cable issues? It is frustrating that we spend so much money and we are the beta testers. I did the same thing doing the IMU calibration on my spark.

Great video once again Russ, confidence in my drone coming back is defiantly a must... one thing I haven’t tried yet is night flights. I tried my Mavic Pro the other evening at dusk, and it didn’t land very well. It came down to 3ft hoovered and then automatically moved right by 6 ft and tried to land.. any ideas. Keep the videos coming mate. 👍👍
