DJI Tello Camera Lens MOD

Hope you are all doing well, I finally got around to modding my TELLO Drone AKA Tiny. I am happy with the results. I will do more flight videos with the new modded camera lens. Enjoy, and thanks for watching.

Also wanted to add, on my Tello, when I first put the adapter that the lenses attach to, I did it dead center over the Tello's camera lens. When I did so , the picture from the video showed the pictuee thru the lens off center.. Showing the rim of the adapter. I removed the adapter, lower it a couple centirneters. And though it was not perfectly center over the Tello's lens, the picture was perfect, showing no edges from the adapter.

Louie DeBono This is true if you look at the Tello drones Lens from the side it is slightly angled therefore you have to put the lands slightly off center. I had the same issue as well one side off centered it was perfect.👍🏽

Where can I find the bottom part if the frame that you showed

GAproductions the bottom portion of the frame is directly off of the Tello, there is 4 tiny screws that hold it together. I take mine off to reduce weight a tiny bit and to help cool the intel CPU. Thanks for watching.

I think hybrid silicone would do this job much more safe and you could remove it with no markings left on a Tello body at all

pemergency thanks for watching and the good info, I might take the lens off and re-center the screw attachment slightly, I can see faint shadows of the lens during heavy maneuvering during flight but only with the fisheye lens. 👍🏽

That's a very interesting mod. I was thinking if doing something like that with my Tello, but epoxy scares me a bit (it is always messy when I use epoxy, although it's one of my favorite materials). In your case, Wide lens is the main achievement, and I'd like to get a ND or CPL filter.

Анна Даник Thanks for watching I understand completely where you’re coming from a two-part epoxy is very hard once it dries that’s why I put just barely enough to hold the mounting ring to where if I needed to take it off it would be able to come off with just a little bit of force too much epoxy and I probably would’ve had a very hard time taking it off.👍🏼✌🏼

Very good. I bought one too. A layman's question: Would it be possible to install a video transmitter in Tello? This is because the image sent to the mobile phone would be "real-time", which would allow a fast FPV (with an OTG receiver, which is cheap). Thankful.

silvioslbandeira bandeira it is possible however the video transmitter would need its own power supply such as a 300-500mah, chargeable battery which would be ideal since it doesn’t weigh much and as for the video transmitter as well very light.

So the Macro lense didnt Work well, right? The fisheye has edges in the Corners. The only lense which Works is the wide angle Lens.

BrickTrick | Legofilme u. Tutorials correct the Macro works but not recommended for a drone due to the subject needing to be very close to Lens, as for fisheye it worked and again you are correct with the edges showing however you can video edit the edges. Personally I made the modifications because I did want a wider lens and that you are correct again, works just fine mission accomplished👍🏽 i’m just about to put up a video with my results in the next 30 minutes or so. There’s only so much that can be done with the five megapixel camera on this tiny drone and flying conditions need to be just right and distance due to Wi-Fi connection however in short it really is truly an awesome drone. Great idea! I have also attached a fisheye lens to my Tello now? I have the same blurry view with the fisheye like you. As the wide angle lens works much better on the Tello in comparison with the fisheye; and the fisheye attached to my cellphone is not as blurry as on the Tello, I guess Tello has problems with auto focus when using the fisheye lens. What is you opinion? And has someone a workaround to get a better result with the fisheye lens?

Michael Hendrich Thanks For watching and sorry for the late response youtube for some reason didn't give me notification of this comment, I happen to come across it from another comment made today? I would say if the fish eye lens had a wider circumference the issue would be resolved since the Tello lens is just about the same diameter as the Fisheye lens its catching the beveled edge of the fish eye to drastically and thus causing blur. I might try to find a wider fish eye lens that hopefully doesn't weight to much and put that to the test. I hope this helps and again sorry for the late response. 👍🏼✌🏼

Mike Luikang Thanks for watching and sorry for the late reply, yes I have I actually attached a RunCam 2 on the Tello with good results and fair flight time. Just search my videos and you will find the video. Hope this helps the Tello is a great pocket drone for what it does it’s just not that great with the video quality due to the 720p camera and the WiFi signal for that video recording. Photos come out great but video is too distorted. 👍🏼✌🏼

Thank you for the reply, yes indeed the tello is great but the video camera is a let down. I have seen your video of Tello mod with the Runcam. What I had in mind was if the camera unit of the tello can be removed and replaced with another unit with better camera, maybe with a higher MP and 1080p

Mike Luikang That might be possible if it was a self standing unit with its own power supply or perhaps maybe taking some of the power from the Tello but to actually replace the camera of the Tello with the onboard PCB it would have to be completely identical with the flex cable that’s used for connection that’s where I feel it would be an issue it would be great if that was the case especially at 1080 P. Perhaps if there’s a Tello 2 in the near future hopefully they will at least put a better camera and better antenna for video signal.

Michael Vanna very good question glad you asked. I made a video showing the results with all lenses while in flight. The slight variance noticed in weight distribution was with the fish eye lens but only at take off the Tello would start of at a slight angle but once in air no issues. Thanks for watching👍🏽

Germán Bravo Thanks for watching and actually you are correct the Macro lens was just used to show the results, the fisheye lens worked better but caught just a little of the lens frame on the Tello during fast turns while in flight . I have videos with the lens during flight on the Tello just search my videos and you will find it.👍🏼✌🏼

Debojit Das The wide Lens works fine the fisheye not so good, as for macro it was fun to put on but will be of no use for purposes of drone flight, my main reason for the different Lens was for quality results the wide was the better.
