I was astounded to see Carlos slamming his open racket hand on that cooler so hard and so many times after the second set. Amy dared to use the word “immature” and I agree. If it was “nature”, as Joel liked to call it, then Carlos is in trouble. I believe the shock and injury to his hand contributed to the cramping and loss of the tiebreak and the championship. Interesting that Novak, despite the heatstroke, does not cramp at all. The detailed holistic discipline that Novak and his teams have embraced and developed since 2010, the commitment to the mind, body, spirit relationship, helped him at 36 to win today. Carlos did do almost the same thing during their Wimbledon match, I think in 4th set. It probably comes from his age and great passion. Even Federer broke racket when he was 21 :) This was great match. At one point, after Novak missed three match points in 3rd set I was so angry that I tweeted "I'm not sure Novak deserves to win this match". But in the end he really finished it like the true champion that he is.

Novak's priority is different at different situations. It's not about it being a Masters 1000, it's about beating Alcaraz. He had a similar mentality last year at ATP Finals vs Medvedev. He was not bothered about playing the semis and the final back to back. It was about beating Medvedev on a HC.

The cramping isn’t an injury it’s just him handling the pressure of the situation and his fitness. He needs to figure it out because getting though matches is part of what you sign up for. It’s one of the key ways players beat other players, both mental and physical conditioning.

Why do you guys hear “cramping” and just automatically jump to “excuses?” Are you this sensitive? It’s just an observation. The ability to not cramp is an example of superior conditioning, so Djokovic is getting full credit for playing so long in the weather without cramps. You really don’t need to ride him this hard; he’s getting plenty of credit here. But it’s a fact that Alcaraz attempted a 2-handed forehand because his hand locked up, which definitely cost him a point in that tiebreak. Are we just supposed to pretend that didn’t happen to satisfy you?

It mostly has to do with the low bouncing conditions at the AO. Here the ball was bouncing over his shoulders, so that aggressiveness was not possible here. We'll have to see how the USO 23 plays out. The conditions will decide everything.

Alcaraz has the younger fresher muscles and more "spark" but Novak has got so much more muscle memory ( both physically in his body and in his mind and soul ) to be able to handle him. For me this is the fascinating part of their battle

I like the point about this rivalry being instantly glorious. There was no transition of the experienced player beating the younger one a few times, then slowly fading and the younger one picking up. This truly has been a remarkable rivalry. 2-2. All matches high quality and going the distance. It’s like both are Kings of their worlds. And it’s impossible to predict who’s going to win the next one , regardless of the surface. I think Alcaraz deserves all the credit for not getting bogged down and really bringing his A game at such a young age. My word. Don’t want to see any other final for as long as Novak continues.

And Alcaraz had ten hours on court this week and played all three setters the week before which Novak took off. (And Alcaraz should have won this in straight sets if he hadn't fallen for the Nole rope a dope.) Yes Djokovic got heat stroke, but in the 3rd set he was certainly free of it while Alcaraz's serve got very suspect and his hand cramped. These matches hang by a thread. I'm not sure how the US Open will top Cincy this week, but some of us will be hoping.

Not only was he playing Alcaraz which was very important psychologically to win going into the US Open but it was his first tournament back on American soil after 2 years. he had huge crowd support.. When it comes to the coaching it was OK for some time with JCF and Carlos but in the end of the third there were a lot of tactical things said before every point: "serve to his body", "higher ball toss!" and stuff like that. I feel like it shouldn't be allowed in that frequency.

About coaching. I agree with Joel. I mean, coach yelling at a player what he needs to do, is heard by other camp and a player on the court. What is the benefit for the player anyway ?. Djokovic knows Spanish, he hears what Ferrero said, he can expect the next move from Alcaraz, unless its a trick and or some special code between the Alcaraz and his coach, but even then Djokovic camp could have figured it out. Vice versa is also true. So, why not make it like in boxing or some other sports. Coach sits on a bench with a player, tells him what to do, other player and his camp cant hear it, and thats it. I dont know about airing it on a TV, because then thr opponent camp can use some device like a phone to see whats been said anyway. So, yea coaching is kind of dumb if you ask me when done incorrectly like its done now. It has very little effect on the match. Before, it had way more effect when it was illegal and was done with some signs that only a player and his coach understand, and who ever "cheated" better had the advantage. Now, its just to predictable to the other camp. So either make it like boxing, or ban it is what i say. Leave the player to figure it out. Im actually against coaching and many of these modern changes tennis had. Tradition is important for a reason.

Oddly, Novak being banned from many events during the pandemic, may have given his body a chance to mend and strengthen, thus possibly extending his career. So many athletes keep pushing their bodies when they need to rest. He looks better than ever.

Djokovic has this uncanny ability to bring exactly what he needs to win the match. I remember against Rublev at Wimbledon, he looked super vulnerable hitting 70 mph second serves. Meanwhile against Alcaraz here, his second serve was on fire, and his volleys stepped up huge. It’s the reason he sometimes drops sets to lesser players. He brings exactly what he needs to win the match. If he doesn’t need his volleys, they just kinda fade away until he faces an opponent who he needs to finish at net against.

I have nuff respect for Alcaraz,and obviously will get better. But there's a reason why we creep before we walk. Persons must give this young man time to grow and understand himself.The experience of Novak at 36 must account for something, so as unapologetic Novak fan that extends beyond the court. I hate the coaching. It is such a change from what all tennis players had to deal with throughout history. It's very different than getting a few obscure face signals. Carlos and the younger players have a huge advantage getting coaching vs. having to deal with everything mentally on their own.

What’s the rule? I thought players were usually allowed one locker room break per best-of-three set match. “Undisciplined” Alcaraz had 42 winners and 22 unforced errors vs. 28 winners and 20 unforced errors for Djokovic. Biggest surprise? net points: 22/33 for Djokovic vs. 14/20 for Alcaraz. Alcaraz is the catalyst; Djokovic is the reactant. There’s a difference between getting tired and cramping. Unfortunately, Alcaraz does seem to have cramping issues. Not enough replays and hero shots and too many crowd shots--thanks for dumping on how Tennis Channel covers matches!
