Your ex wasn't being malicious, she was just being realistic. I'm a electrical engineer who makes beats on the side. imagine I told my wife that in 2023, I'm quitting my profession to sell beats on Beatstars. 😂😂 With new technology in AI, the ability to charge thousands of dollars per track is coming to an end.

I've always figured for independent artists exclusives should be in the realm of $300-1000. If the artist has a bit of a buzz and I see they actually move units and earn money off music, it's closer to the higher end of that range because I know they can afford it.
@sontwisted

Why they are still getting the same exclusive rights as the artist with money why should they get it for cheap if they cant afford it they shouldnt buy exclusive
@BasedProducer
@BasedProducer 2 ай бұрын
It's what you think your art is worth at the end of the day. I've only just started releasing beats and released my first one a few days ago. I have a few beats that I absolutely love and they have a lot of value for me. I'm set to open to offers but it would realistically take a lot to get me to allow some of my favourite beats to go on exclusive lease when I eventually release them. Not even $1000 would let me part way with certain beats. Any art is subjective and people can value their art however they see fit, and live and die by their decision. I happen to put a lot of effort into my songs, I make everything from scratch. Complexity and uniqueness has intrinsic value imo. I would also hate for someone to buy one of my favourites on exclusive and do nothing with it. The whole point of releasing music for me is that I don't want it going to waste on my hard drive.

Great "solo" video. Being that it is all subjective, I like that you challenge producers to put some thought and math into the pricing of their products. Standing firm on $10K could work but it will more than likely make a producer a self sabotaged martyr. Happy birthday. Continued successes and blessings to you in your new year and on your journey. Keep moving forward and shine on.

Very informative. It’s like this: Pharrell Williams can charge 100k for a beat because he is proof of concept. For THORell Williams, nobody has ever heard of him so he has to be fair and make a price that is beneficial to both himself and the artist.
@DJPain1
@DJPain1 Жыл бұрын
Anybody can charge 100k for anything; doesn’t mean they’ll buy it. An unsigned artist who makes $1000 a week can’t afford 100k for a beat. A lot of producers overvalue themselves and have some odd perception of rappers as having endless financial resources.

@@DJPain1 I’d say it’s far more of a self-perpetuated image by many rappers rather than an “odd perception” by a given producer or listener. that aside, I agree with what was said here altogether and the gist of the video. thanks for dissecting these topics, it’s very insightful and encouraging.

Assuming it was a premade beat and not a custom, 250-500 is fair for everyone. I dont feel bad about buying or charging in that range but thats just me. Custom exclusives could be any price. Personally id rather have 250 and a point on a record then a 1000$ beat sale

I remember being approached for my first beat. I didnt actually sell music at the time. He asked how much for a song i posted up on a free website that is no longer around called macjams. I had no clue, being from canada and him from the usa i replied with $250usd exclusive. I didnt expect a reply back but he immediately agreed and it came out to about $400CAD. I was so happy and thankful that he accepted with no blow back at all. He wasnt a rapper though, he was a singer with 2 female artists from hawaii. I think they had a budget to work with. He also sent me 2 free copies of the cd that the song went onto. My parents framed it and made a plaque out of it with a copy of the cheque. Was a cool experience. This was like 15 yrs ago and not sure how the market works but I still feel if someone likes your music dont undersell yourself. If I could sell music at 250+ so can you! I could never make it a profession though. Its a great side hobby/passion/gig.

200-500 for exclusive. I say that bc when youre on a budget its kind of hard to when life is in the way to pay for a beat thats substantially more than what u pay in groceries...but at this point when u start buying you might want to LLC your name and look for business funding. When u become more established as an artist i feel about 1000 and up is substantial to buy out and exclusive bc the quality youve received from your producers, the facy they let you pay a reasonably amount of money over time you should be ok to give that up and budget how youre going to spend on marketing etc for yourself. But this is all subjective which i love bc u hear a whole bunch of perspectives

Happy belated birthday 🎉 hope it was good. I really liked this video a lot. It made think about a few things. Far as beats prices for me I don’t have a “set price”, I judge off the artist quality of music, how consistent they are with the tunes and their content. I’m not doing anything lower than $650 for an exclusive and that’s if the artist is dope. In releasing instrumentals on the platforms I’ve built up a decent brand and have my own fans over 1K followers on Spotify and am doing fairly well on Apple Music. So when artists do reach out to me about beats they usually understand that I’m bringing more than just a beat and they respect the prices.

Pricing imo on the producers end should be based off of skill, time, and demand. if you know how to make beats that keep getting positive feedback and you see a large following and you know its hot then you have got the skill. time, it takes time to make a beat and some people are skilled and could make a beat in a very short amount of time but if you are taking an hour or 3 hours and the product is good then time should also be included as well as the time it took for some producers to be able to create good work in short amount of time. demand, if you have 10-20 people hitting you up daily then you have got demand for your product and you should raise your prices to weed out the ones who can't afford it or arn't as serious. how exclusive your beats are should also depend imo on how much of it is samples vs from scratch. meaning did you have to use third party plugins to make it? and honestly right now i'm happy we havn't gotten to the point where the plugins and daw companies themselves havn't been asking for partial points for us using their technology to even create the music... which i think is coming soon.

It’s the right of any business to refuse service. It’s the responsibility of the buyer to ask these questions before making a purchase. For me, a lot of artists lowball and ask for exclusive rights for $100 or so. I say ‘no’ and I have every right. Or they offer me $400 for a beat that has, over the last two years, generated $10,000 and I also say ‘no.’ I will offer to make a new custom beat for them or give them a discount on the unlimited commercial rights. They have a right to say ‘no’ back to me. Nobody should have a problem with that.

Anyway, for an artist who has worked hard to build community like you have, I’d personally rather do an EP with and just have an even split. That’s just me though, but if you’re open to doing it with me, just lmk otherwise that wouldn’t be a bad idea to propose to other producers too

Something you must calculate is how much you'd make if you didn't let the beats go on exclusive. If you have a lot of people buying smaller limited leases, that's potentially by far more profitable when compared to $150 as a one off. I suppose it depends on how much time and effort you put into your music and what you feel your music is worth. If you're happy doing an exclusive for that price then nothing is stopping you. I suppose the only drawback I can think of is that if these people buying your beat for $150 have no following or they don't use the beat at all, you don't even have a chance at royalties. If you priced it slightly higher you might attract more intermediate rappers rather than attracting let's say the beginner type rappers. How long have you been making beats for mate? Full disclosure, I've only just started and have no idea what I'm talking about. Just stating some obvious pointers that came to mind

break your record for getting a higher level with consistency .. if you make a really good beat and you believe in yourself ,maybe it COULD BE 800 per day after couple years !

I think artists need to understand how much money there is to be made from an exclusive purchase. Live shows, sync licensing, PRO royalties and more. One sync and the beat is paid for and then some.

You make all that from an unlimited lease just the same. You gotta stop spreading these lies.

@@DJPain1 I was referring to singers/rappers complaining about expensive exclusives. If they understood all the revenue streams they might be more comfortable with paying more.

The reference is really important to price your beat. Maybe the kid who is selling those beats for €30 got rich parents and doesnt have the experience with the real record label. I do i must say in the past. Even rappers or people in genaral doesnt have experience and makeup prices without any reference and misuse the music industrie. €30 with exclusive rights is way too cheap for a beat. Equipment for making a beat is tagged also with a price and that could be a reference too for pricing.

I’m currently giving away exclusives cause I’m learning. I earn money on my day job. When is it appropriate to start charging?

Wasn't the female artist he was talking about skeptical about the purchase because of the very low price for the exclusive lease the whole conversation is about what to charge

so my original question would be how could anyone possibly make any money for that price or anything basically low because of the exclusive right and i know every producer thinks every beat is 🔥 even so u would need 12000 tracks to make something

It's hard to make money just making music. I definitely can't quit my day job. It's so hit or miss, and it takes a long time for projects to actually roll out. You can make something really dope, and more often than not, the artist will never even hear it because the A&R that happened to review it had bad taste. There's so, so much that is beyond the producers control. I wouldn't sell anything to anyone for $40 dollars. That is absolute chump change.

I dont like the whole I charge smaller artists 100 but bigger artists 10K. When you go buy anything from a merchant you want to pay the price the guy infront of you paid. I understand inflation. I understand raising prices because of demand but charging an Indie artist 100 for a beat but you have connects to a label and you charge them 10k doesnt make sense.
