To be fair I think a big reason Congo Bongo wasn't as popular is because of the isometric aspect making it difficult to judge exactly where your character is and makes precise jumps very tricky. This was a new concept at the time. I remember being quite impressed at it appearance when I first encountered it in one of the arcade tents at the local County Fair that year. Unfortunately getting used to this new 3D-ish game play made for very short games which would have burned through my short supply of quarters.

I've never once seen the opening to Donkey Kong and not wanted to immediately play it lol I just love the way the girders fall into place as he bounces into position. The whole thing just has the most pleasing look and sounds. If I was to get an arcade cabinet, I might want it to be that one. If there's one strength of miyamoto's that I believe has never aged, it's his ability to make the visuals and movement of the characters so irresistibly appealing to the eye. I'm not sure how to explain the charm, but you can always tell when he's involved.

I'd totally forgotten about this game, but this definitely jogged my memory. I recall it not being particularly fun in the arcade. Surreal to hear the commercial for the home version with voiceover provided by Henny "Take My Wife Please" Youngman. Video games and 1950s Borscht Belt comedy don't really strike me as a natural combination.

I'd say Congo Bongo also takes a few tricks from Q-bert as well. The cliffside level certainly resembles Q-bert's famous layout. As for the time, I'm surprised this game doesn't get more contemporary acclaim from retro enthusiasts. It looks like it was made three years later than it really was, which is saying something considering the technological arms race SEGA and Namco were in at the time.

I remember seeing Congo Bongo at a grocery store when I was a kid. I think my memories are fonder than most. I’m glad it was unlockable on the PSP and PS3 versions of Sega Genesis Collection. Space Fury was also on the PSP version. That one needs an update! I have a story about that one. I saw Space Fury at Aladdin’s Castle when I was six, and just when I was about to drop a token into the machine, the alien mascot for the game popped up and started talking, I ran from it to the other side of the arcade. When I’d finally worked up the courage to play it, the game was gone. So redemption finally came when I unlocked Space Fury. It’s pretty fun!

Sort of related to the video, but not completely. We (as in most of the UK), have pronounced it as "Sayguh", but the old Sonic logos sound more like "mega", but with an 'S'. Some people even go as far as to say it's pronounced more like "seager" (rhymes with eager). The "correct" way, is "sega" (as in "rhymes with mega") so when you say "Sega Mega Drive", the first two words should rhyme.

Sega using the same devs to make Congo Bongo as Nintendo used to make Donkey Kong had a lot more to do with combative psychological warfare than any serious attempt to set the arcade world on fire. It was a troll move among arcade bit-players at the time.

Congo Bongo seems interesting. Back in the 80s I was at the Nintendo site. Do own a lot of different consoles from the past until now. Thus not only Nintendo, also Sega, Atari, PlayStation, Philips cartridge based old system, Xbox etc. Although I am a Nintendo fan, I always have a lot respect for Sega. Especially the Dreamcast was maybe my favorite console in gen 6. Its a pity Sega left the hardware market back in 2001, I would loved to see, but, own and play a new Sega console. Probs for this video buddy!

The difference between 1080I and 1080P is half your resolution. Progressive scan drawers the entire screen pixel by pixel, top left to bottom right. Interlaced draws it in alternating even and odd rows instead, costing half your resolution, essentially.

0:37 Yes that is right! MushiKing is the one inspired by pokemon! Not Dinosaur King! Dinosaur King is a MushiKing clone. I hate how so many people get this wrong so much! It's not even that hard to figure out if you actually bother to do the research! I mean sure the anime might have the comic relief villain trio trope that Pokemon's anime popularized but it also took inspiration from Digimon's anime too! Also, people talk about the shared voice actors in the english dub and how Zander sounds like James even though he actually sounds like Pegasus from Yugioh but that's the English dub for a cartoon made IN JAPAN and of course 4kids reused their voice actors! They always reuse them!

I happen to think that one of the major factors in this being left in time over actually going anywhere...was because the pixel perfect jumping make the game too tough to want to continue on wards. It felt like you'd do the right move, only to die from the awkward combination of a missed pixel and that 3/4 view point. Oh, sure. The game was good. But, a little more time used to fiddle with the forgiveness of where one landed at is where this game fails.
