All year when the chiefs defense needed a stop on a critical down, they seemed to always dial up the perfect blitz. It was almost expected last night that Josh Allen would have to rush a throw. And it was foreshadowed on the 3rd down when they only got 5 on the quick wr screen to beat a different blitz. Meanwhile the Steelers couldn’t get a stop on 2nd and 20 vs Baltimore.

DK, you're absolutely right, MTs defense last year and being reluctant to change during a losing streak is mind boggling but it's piling on to knock him for the recent trend of going for it on 4th down no matter what! All 4 teams yesterday played with that mindset because of not just great QB play, they have great offenses, multiple threats to include QB runs. 1984 to 2004, that's the period when Bradshaw retired and BB got drafted, here's hoping it's not 20 years again between franchise QBs, especially when you MAY have 1 right now in Fields! Give him a chance and let Russ walk! By the way, SPAGS was brilliant yesterday sir! 😎

@chaseschneier10769 күн бұрын
It’s not just the QB. These teams invest heavily in the O line. Winning teams generally have impressive O line play. The Steelers don’t and haven’t for several years. Until that gets remedied, Allen, Mahomes, Montana, etc…would be wasted talent. Fix it up front first and your mediocre QB’s will begin to shine.
@andrewszymanski35789 күн бұрын
You do realize that they have invested in the o-line? Just because they're still young and haven't jelled together yet doesn't mean that they're bad. Give them another 1-2 years. Look at the average age of the Eagles o-line and compare that to ours. Edit: the oldest guy on our o-line isn't a long term answer, which is Isaac Seumalo who is 31. Steelers use the draft to put their o-lines together.
@drumlinejared9 күн бұрын
@@andrewszymanski3578They can't coach the O-line. It's been terrible for a decade. How long does it take?
@chaseschneier10769 күн бұрын
Andrew, how many years has this team suffered WITHOUT an impressive O line?! Ever since Munchak left. The Eagles don’t have underperforming Pat Meyer as O line coach. In fact, The Eagles won big with a beat up O line missing several starters. This is part of the investment I speak of. Poor drafting (eg Green at center) has also been deleterious to an effective O line. We hope this group will gel properly, but with Meyer and his boss at the helm, it might be a tall task.
@andrewszymanski35789 күн бұрын
@@drumlinejared I'd say when you have Colbert getting poor excuses for draft picks to put on the o-line (as well as out of their proper position), it takes a lot longer than you'd like. And before blaming Tomlin, you should realize that the GM does the drafting of players. The coach just tells what positions need to be targeted. Take for example, Greene was taken in the third round and had only a little experience playing center. It was a higher priority with Colbert to get Najee in the first round and Freiermuth in the second round. I also believe that it was the same draft class where we got Dan Moore. And while Moore has been solid, do you really expect a fourth round pick to become a hall of famer?
@mike26879 күн бұрын
@@andrewszymanski3578 - I’d pushback about the take that Tomlin is telling him what positions to target-if he was limited to that, then Tomlin wouldn’t go to all those pro days taking specific players out to dinner. My understanding, and feel free to correct me if you have some insight, is that Tomlin has a lot of pull in the draft-more so in the first couple rounds and less influence as the draft goes on. Secondly, none of that has anything to do with having a guy like Dotson on the wrong side for multiple seasons-that’s the GM having poor information and trading away a legit NFL guard. Tomlin, by all accounts, seemed to be very high on Najee and that pick is on him just as much, if not more, than KC. Tomlin is a fan of the “splash” play as he’s always seemed to favor skill players over the trench guys. For clarification-I’m blaming both

That is the first thing I thought of when Romo commented on the corner blitz and how Spagnulo kept it in his pocket until he needed it the most.

Tomlin landed with the perfect team they don’t fire coaches. When you see Tomlin there’s almost an arrogance or cockiness about him. He knows nothing will happen to him but if was with any other franchise that stubbornness and unwillingness to to change would be out the window because he would actually have to perform to keep his job. In Pittsburgh it’s his job as long as he wants it. The way he’s ruined Pittsburgh he wouldn’t even have a job had he not landed in Pittsburgh.

DK is 100% correct in his assessments about coaching. But what also stood out to me when watching these games (it's something we've all known forever) is how important offensive line play is. Other than QB play, it's the most vital aspect of an offense. In some cases, equally as important as QB play. When the line is moving the defense backwards on runs and giving the QB 3,4, or 5 seconds to throw, an offense is almost impossible to stop in this day and age. The Steelers haven't had a good line since 2018-2019. I'm sure it's a combination of both personal and coaching, but until it's fixed, we'll never compete for a SB. I don't care who the QB is.

"Next man up" isn't just for injuries and trades. Are Smith an Tomlin living in fear, or do I expect too much? The Steelers hit a stretch of short week games against leading teams, and the wheels fell off. The defense was tired from being on the field all the time. Nothing affects morale like reality. I kept waiting for them to change it up. Make adjustments between games, at least. Early success led to nostalgia. Fortunately a lot of this can be fixed with schemes, and keeping some plays in your hip pocket for later. We should be more worried about what happens when Cam Heyward decides to retire. QBs aren’t created in a lab, they have to learn in an environment that’s comfortable with the good and the bad. We’re so worried about the now, that we sacrifice the future, over and over again.
