Some food for thought: I have a 2018 M8 heritage. Using an FP3 to monitor engine temps I found that using soft lowers on the crash bar increased temperatures by 40 degrees on a 60 degree day! The fork fangs raised temps 15 degrees. And very surprisingly, purring my feet up in the crash bar also increased temps by 10 degrees. Also, 20 mph cross wind dropped temps by 10-15 degrees. This shows how much a little change in air flow affects these air cooled engines. (Btw engine ran at 235 with no wind blocking items).

Great to hear you are doing a lot of the same experiments/exploration that we have done and getting similar results. Really good info, thanks for the comment. 👍😎👍 Engine at 235 F is really good, we have not been able to achieve that on a stock M8 Softail on a warm day at interstate speeds. One of the most effective things HD did on the M8 Softails is the larger oil cooler. Here is our test of it- kzbin.info/www/bejne/nmiolZ2IbdFrd8k

i've owned harley's with shovels to M8's, and the 2017 M8 twin cool has been by far the coolest running from the rider seat than the rest. not to say that the oil temp doesn't run hotter. but ive never noticed burnt smelling oil or any visual issues from inside during motor upgrades. i do run dual breathers. one at the motor intake and one at the oil pan/tranny. that helped reduce oil level in crank from 4-5 oz. to 2 oz. oil pressure with S&S pump cold is 50+, at operating temp. holds steady at 40 even running highway for 12+ hours cross country. i do know that motor oil has proved to make significant differences and i'm extremely happy with one certain brand. but i'm not gonna start a oil war here so i won't mention it. but, it isn't amsoil. Lol but i will be diving in to this deeper in the future. i'm working on turning my RGU into the most reliable, longest lasting bike i've had. not the most powerful. thanks for all the info. i may be talking with you in the future concerning cooler upgrade.

Make a crash bar cooler.. I did it and it was common back in the 50s and 60s... Put a oil filter adapter in and run it into a fitting you install on the bottom of the crash bar. Then on the other end of the crash bar install a fitting taking oil back to the filter adapter.. I made my 88ci Deuce into a 124" hottie and never had oil over about 220f on the hottest days.

Yes, that is something that more then a few people have done. I seriously considered doing that back in 2005 on my Road King. I chose not to for the following reasons. -Did not want to get burned or other folks get burned if touching the crash bar. -Could not find any data that showed if they cooled better or worse than a traditional oil cooler -The cost of pulling the bar, pressure testing it to make sure there were no leaks at any of the weld joints, thoroughly cleaning the inside of the tubing, drilling and tapping the inlet and outlet ports....This would cost more in time and money than a traditional oil cooler - If you lay the bike over and break the oil cooler you would be stranded. It is not protected being attached to the crash bar. Even so, I almost did it...just to test it out and have something different. In the end, I did not want to take the time to do it.👍😎👍

In my humble opinion you guys are spot on. Run an oil filter relocation kit with an oil cooler. Route the oil lines so the hot oil from the engine goes through the oil filter first then through the oil cooler. Run a mesh cleanable oil filter and also install a cylinder head cooling fan like a Jim’s force flow. Replace the dip stick with a digital dip stick so oil temps can be monitored. Just my two cents.

While I don’t have any official numbers I will say during the summer in 80 degree weather my 2018 ultra limited ran extremely hot. So much so that I would have to stop and let it cool down a bit just because it was so uncomfortable. I had a short discussion with my dad regarding thermal heat exchange properties (he is an engineer). 1st: Air is a bad conductor of heat. Oil or Water is a medium and can be efficiently used to exchange heat transfer. 2nd: Heat exchange is directly related to the surface area. E.g. Car head do not have any fins. The heat is transferred via water to an external large radiator and it works perfectly fine. When it's stationery the air blower is throwing hot air onto the engine heads. Yet it works perfectly fine because we have taken the heat from the engine, expanded it to a larger surface and lowered the temp. Laws of physics - Hot air will fine ways to rise and escape, can't stop it. It will eventually be replaced by cooler air. So essentially to cool the H-D motors down we need to approach it with these primary 2 factors in mind.

Amazing difference's , my 2018 FLTRU M8 Dual cool seems to run a lot cooler than my 103, 2013 Road King did. (according to my wife riding the pilon) I run syn 3 in all holes and we can get over 100 degrees in summer...must admit I don't ride much in those days, but took it across the prairies in Canada in 2019, 800 miles/day with no issues, outside temperature was about 80 degrees each day. Maybe I'll buy a temp dipstick just to see. Didn't realize temps were that high.

Yes, HD made big strides in reducing the amount of felt heat on the M8's. Unfortunately the heat is still the same in the engine...too high. I don’t have a water cooled Harley, but it looks like a hell of a lot of engineering to water cool the heads on the M8, when there’s so much space for a decent sized oil cooler with fans. Harley logic is sometimes hard to follow!

i have used an oil temperature gauge for 20 years on my twin cams and m8's. The twin cams & the M8's were water cooled. The difference was not lower oil temps. They remained about the same. The biggest difference is no predetonation at high ambient temps (85F+)and high altitudes (5000'+). Zero. Before that, the combination of high altitudes and temps usually brought on pinging.
@peteryeanacopolis2037
@peteryeanacopolis2037 Жыл бұрын
I agree with you ….mostly. Part of the twin coolings feature’s is that when stopping In high temperatures the ecm makes changes to the air/fuel mixture to compliment the cooler exhaust valves enhancing the acceleration leaving from the stopped position eliminating sputtering and coughing that some if not all the air cooled bikes experience however I would have to lean towards having an oil cooler being a benefit rather than a waste of money. I have a 2015 fltruse that I did install the remote oil filter kit from DK however I don’t monitor my oil temperature. I know it’s hot but not too hot and I don’t want to stress myself out it by reading a temp monitor. That being said they’re correct about what the twin cooled bikes are actually cooling, just the exhaust valves which it does well along with the ecm correction at idle but that seems to me there’s a lot of plumbing for the purpose intended.
@DKCustomProducts
@DKCustomProducts Жыл бұрын
The Twinkies used an ION Sensing to help eliminate the pinging. The M8's use actual, automotive style, knock retard sensors, mounted on each cylinder. For an M8 to ping, something is seriously awry, whether oil cooled or Twin-Cooled. Technically there are no water cooled Twin Cam's or M8's. Look at this video to see what HD does to eliminate the knock/ping/pre-det on the M8's- kzbin.info/www/bejne/a4Hbe2uGq8iJqsU

I'm a big fan of Love Jugs engine fans. My wife says they look like Mickey Mouse ears on the engine but I don't mind the look when they are keeping my cylinder head temps down and thus the oil temps down. I also run an upgraded oil pump and cam plate from S&S. Remember, what you are actually measuring with oil temperature is how hot your heads are getting. If you keep air flowing across the cooling fins then the oil temp never gets high in stop and go traffic. Also, the higher volume oil pump and cam plate definitely keeps the oil pressure higher at idle on a hot engine, so even hotter, thinner oil is keeping the bearings protected and the piston oilers doing their jobs. I think if I ever find the need for more cooling I would go with a upgraded oil cooler that has a fan built into it but so far haven't needed it.

@DKCustomProducts
@DKCustomProducts 7 ай бұрын
Ni Norman, Good to hear you are finding the videos useful. Thank you for the comment! 👍 The RG 3 will cost less, and it will run a bit cooler. It will also ride rougher because of the low profile rear tires. The rougher ride can be dealt with by either changing out the rear wheels and tires, or by upgrading the rear shocks...or maybe the ride quality will not bother you. The bigger considerations are, will you both be comfortable on it. It has a different seat, no Tour Pak (which doubles as a backrest for the passenger). Another difference is that the trunk is accessed from the top rather than the back. Some like that better, others not as much. Test riding both models, back to back, may help in the decision process....remembering, you can change the seat on the RG3 if it is not good for you, and you can also add a passenger backrest to the RG3. Hope that helps. KP

Hello Gentlemen. Will you guys be in Laconia this year?
@DKCustomProducts
@DKCustomProducts Жыл бұрын
We will not be at Laconia. We generally do not do shows, we keep pretty busy making parts, shipping them quickly and always answering the phone and emails in a timely manner...makes it difficult to get to shows. We are considering going to Sturgis this year. If we do, we will be announcing it on the site and on youtube in the next month or so.

Would the fan assist by ultracool work even better? And which tuner do you suggest, powervision or tmax?? For a 20 ultra 114?? Thx

@DKCustomProducts 11 ай бұрын
We have tested the Ultracool Oil Coolers, with fans and without fans (we were considering running some on our own bikes and offering them on our website). They definitely cool the oil a significant amount. They do Not cool the oil as well as the Jagg oil coolers. They are around 80% as effective as the Jagg units. Additionally, they do not make their adapters, coolers or fans. One of the reasons their coolers have so many counterfeits (see their homepage) is because the factories that they have used in China are knocking them off. They only have a 1 year warranty...and if you have a new Touring model with lower fairings they want you to cut the lower fairing. If it was the only oil cooler available, we would run it. But it is not. Jagg makes their own and if you have a problem with one 5 or 10 years down the road they will take care of you. Here is a video on 10 low to no cost ways to cool down your Harley that you may find useful/interesting - kzbin.info/www/bejne/pWS3ZKx3bqd-rac As for a tuner I suggest the Power Vision, not only do you get real time readings and auto tune capabilities, but Fuel Moto has good customer service, 5 year warranty and lifetime support for their products. @DKCustomProducts
@DKCustomProducts Жыл бұрын
The bracket we make is for a left side mount of the oil cooler. We recommend doing an oil filter relo, then you can mount the oil cooler on the left side. Additional benefits are easier, no mess oil filter changes and it is more in the wind, so additional cooling. There is no reduction in lean angle, and the bike can fall on its side and the relocated oil filter will not touch the ground. Here is a link to the package- www.dkcustomproducts.com/oil-filter-relocation-oil-cooler-combo-pkg-harley-touring-dk-ofr-dcoc-2wh.htm If, for some reason you do not want to relo the oil filter, you could take our bracket, that comes with the kit and fab up a mirror of it yourself. Make sure to put the angled holes in it, they are important for air flow to the engine. Here is the link to just the oil cooler for your bike- www.dkcustomproducts.com/dual-cool-oil-cooler-for-2009-up-touring-models-incl-twin-cool-dk-dc-oc-fl.htm

What's the best way to measure your oil temps?
@chrisl.7345
@chrisl.7345 Жыл бұрын
I installed the Vance & Hines FP3 Programmer/Tuner on my 2017 M8, it allows you to check all kinds of Live Data while riding including ofcourse the oil temperature. I highly recommend this, you will never have to guess about your Bikes condition again 👌🏻
@DKCustomProducts
@DKCustomProducts Жыл бұрын
We use Oil Temp dipsticks from JesCustoms. In the past we have used HD digital dipsticks, but they are hit and miss on how long they last. You can also get a temp sensor that you plug into the engine and then run wires to a gauge that you figure out where to mount. Much more expensive, and you will get warmer readings as the oil in the engine is hotter than the oil in the tank that is measured with the temp dipstick. All of our testing has been done with oil temp dipsticks.

I have a 2021 Harley Tri Glide M8 114. If I decat. stock header do I need to add tuner to protect engine from too lean a condition? Which lift mod. do you recommend, 1, 1 1/2, or 2 inch, if I add your wing kit.
@DKCustomProducts
@DKCustomProducts Жыл бұрын
No, you do not need to retune if you remove the cat. M8's do not run too lean, and removing the cat will not make it run too lean. See this video on the OEM tune for the M8- kzbin.info/www/bejne/gpPCZmqQlK6jo9U A 1" or 1.5" will work well with the cooling deflector wings on your Tri Glide...as long as you do not have some lowered adjustment to your bars, or things hanging off your bars. It is easy to check for clearance...steps are in this link- www.dkcustomproducts.com/touring-model-tank-lift-kit-dk-trg-tlk.htm

They do not come with one. They Sporty 883 usually does not need an oil cooler. If the oil temps are staying at 230 F or lower, you are good to go with no oil cooler. If they are going past 230 F, definitely should add an oil cooler. HD has oil temp dipsticks that you can use to monitor your oil temp.

@DKCustomProducts
@DKCustomProducts Жыл бұрын
It does not work as well as it would with a fan assist, but it still gives quite a bit of surface area for the heat to dissipate as it is flowing thru the cooler. Also, the oil filter being out, away from the engine, also adds to the cooling, whether stopped or moving.

@@DKCustomProducts I'd be replacing that idiot oil light with an oil gauge, and more than likely increase the oil pressure by filing the clearances of the oil pump say from .011 to .04 of an inch to get 20-30 psi at idle and 50 psi when running especially on an increased compression ratio from the factory 🏭, and a lesser cooling system that they decided to wing it with the customer base for trials. The oil pressure gauge is good to measure when it's time for an oil change as well as a daily driver, adding more flow to the remote oil cooler than the stock pressure as well. Harley is going to abandon the riders with electric there corporates and will sell you out just to look at you.

Thank you, glad you enjoyed, and we appreciate your comment. Did you watch the video? I thought I was pretty clear. The Twin-Cooled (even Harley does not dare call it water cooled) only circulates oil coolant around the exhaust valves. And there is NO PLACE for the oil to shed all the heat it is absorbing. On the oil cooled bikes they have a very large oil cooler that is one of the best things HD has done in the last couple of decades. Here are a couple of videos that go into more detail on Twin-Cooled vs. Oil Cooled. They both show testing and results...one of them of both bikes riding side by side and showing temps of oil and engine heat. kzbin.info/www/bejne/nmiolZ2IbdFrd8k kzbin.info/www/bejne/bHLLgaSModt4Y9k

You ask “why” Harley Davidson can’t figure out how to put an oil cooler on their twin cooled bikes? You know good and well that Harley figured that out years ago, but johan or johon or whatever his name is, isn’t about to spend the extra $100 per $50k motorcycle to make the product right. Not when people will buy the bikes anyway lining his pockets with cash on top of cash while the everyday, hard working, man gets sold an inferior product because of corporate greed.

Oh my goodness...that is just not possible. There is no doubt that many folks find their engines running cooler with Amsoil than many other oils...but most bikes (Twin Cam & M8), from 2007 and later will run 270-325 F. Changing to Amsoil is not going to lower the oil temps by 95-110 F.
