I have been running Love Jugs and an oil cooler on my big twins for several years. I also run an oil cooler on my 49 Panhead that came off a 78 Lowrider. It really makes a difference here in North Central Florida in the summertime.

Thank you for your videos and for continuing to educate the Motorcycling Community about Air-Cooled bikes and the excessive heat they can and do generate. Strictly "air-cooled" is not enough unless you maybe ride in colder temperature zones such as Northern Alaska. Your educational video series inspired me to do something to protect my Harley-Davidson, 2003 Twin Cam engine, from overheating which is something I had noticed when riding in town with miserable stop and go traffic conditions. I added an Ultra Cool oil cooler and it made a real BIG difference. I subsequently also added a Dynojet Power Commander 6 to my ride and this not only provided me with more torque and horsepower but maximized my fuel efficiency and the overall operation of the twin cam engine. When an engine performs well it has a direct correlation to operating temperatures.

Been riding air-cooled, iron-barreled V-twins for 45yrs. There's more to an oil-cooler than just longer hoses. Gotta use a well-tuned engine and a good oil-pump w/ proper pressure relief valve/spring. The oil does collect in the aluminum crankcase, so there is some heat transfer. H-D did sell a very efficient 'oil-cooler' back in the Shovelhead days made by Lockhart. Some say it's not needed on an Evo. I believe any reduction in oil temp is a plus. The Brits used to run the oil thru the frame. Lots of surface area and air flow!

DK Oil relocation kit and tank lift took my 200-210° F oil temp down to 190-200° F on my 2015 Iron 883. I haven't seen my oil get over 200° since and I ride 60 miles on highway to work doing between 70-80 mph the whole way on a typical day in the 70s & 80s F.

Thanks for posting. I also have a 2023 tri-glide. I’m in Florida and yes my engine gets very hot. I noticed that on my right side the heat on my leg gets very uncomfortable. I got stuck on I-4 on my way to Orlando and I had to pull over. Stop and go traffic is terrible. I cant split lanes like I use to. Now the love bugs are back. lol. That a hold different issue.

I been hearing this anti-oil cooler crap for the past 40 years. Some people hear something from their friends and kinda stick to it. I get that, but even after showing them proof positive they still don't believe it. The same goes with recommending 50-weight oil. een after you show them that HD does in fact recommend it under certain conditions they still deny it or for that matter the use of 10240 which had also recommends under certain conditions. The Softai loil trick came from Axtell long ago. Nothig more than relocating the oil feed line to the left side of the tank instead of the reifght side. It dropped the temps a good 10 degrees. Which those big ductile iron cylinders from Axtell really brought the heat up, bt never distorted. You guys keep up the good work. @@DKCustomProducts

Dwayn and Kevin, I love all of your guys videos. I especially love the ones on heat related to oil and the engine. For a few years I have ran into people I ride with not understand that all of the bikes, Road Glide, Street Glide, Tri Glide and any of the limiteds are ALL air cooled engines. Some of them swore that they were oil cooled or water cooled because of how Harley markets them. I had to explain what oil cooled and water cooled actually was and then even more I had to explain that twin cooled was AIR and water around the exhaust ports. I think that is the problem, people hear oil cooled and they think the motor is being cooled by the oil and not understand it means the bike has a passive oil cooling capability, but engine is being cooled by AIR. The other big shocker to my friends that are on a version of a limited, is that there is no oil cooling capability on the bikes. When I bought my 2021 Ultra, people couldn't believe when I started cutting my lower fairing to install an UltraCool fan. Then I had to explain again why I was doing it. In any case you guys keep putting the information out there and maybe people will start understanding the bikes are AIR COOLED!

@@DKCustomProducts forgot to mention that people do not really understand the importance of cooling your oil. It is not to cool the engine, but cooling your oil helps like you said longevity. The high heat of your oil breaks down the viscosity, regardless if it is synthetic, which leads to increased friction, component wear and ultimately engine break down or damage. But you guys know all this, keep up the great work and maybe more people will understand the importance of all of it. Cannot wait for your next video.

I’m running an ultra cool with the fan on my 2011 FLHX I’ve noted that the oil temps are running between 200 and 210 depending on the type of riding and traffic. I just add wind deflectors to my fairing I’m going to try angling the vents towards the engine to see what that does but I have noted that the motor definitely feels like there’s less heat coming off it after a long ride with the ultra cool and Flo oil filter combo. I’ll more than likely be adding love jugs to the motor in the near future Great video guys

I am not sure what you are hoping to achieve with either, but I would suggest a digital oil dip stick for being able to measure your oil temperatures. The vented dipsticks are ok but do NOT take the place of external breather systems and they also do not tell you how hot your oil is getting. There is still hot, oily, oxygen depleted air being fed into the intake. The folks that sell vented dipsticks and trans cover vents, have it right in their product description that they do not prevent all that crap from going into your intake. Here is a copy and paste from the Trask website- "This will reduce the oil exiting from the head breathers..." Even if there is no trace of oil in the intake, there is still hot, oxygen depleted air going into the combustion chambers, making the engine run hotter, and not as strong because of the lower oxygen content. I have a 2015 HD Freewheeler. I am looking at getting a 1" tank lift and air deflector wings from you. I need to rewatch your vid about what else is helpful to get temps down. I am not sure as to all of the updates my trike has as I bought in 11/2023. HD says Stage 1 and probably Stage 2 as it runs like it has an upgraded cam in it. Questions for Kevin, regarding his Trike:

I have purchased and installed every cooling option that you sell for the Tri Glide, *except* the oil cooler. What has kept me away from that are two things: (1) not sure of the need, coupled with (2) wondering if the extra lines just introduce another potential failure point that I otherwise wouldn’t have. I am open to being swayed for an oil cooler, but I’m just not convinced yet. But I have everything else you sell for reducing the temperature, including Jims Force Flow fan. I also have the Harley CoolFlow fan installed. All readings below are when ambient temperature is 75 to 80 degrees… I have a Dynojet Powervision 4 permanently installed on my handlebars (which I know you also have). It is common for it to report an ET (Engine Temperature) from 260 to 270 degrees, but of course it takes some time to come up to that temp. Otherwise it is lower, but once I’ve been running for a bit, temps around 260 to 270 are typical (closer to 260 unless I push my speed around 80 mph, then it climbs to 270, and if I push and hold around 90 mph, it climbs to 275 to 280). I also have a JES Customs Oil Temperature Dipstick (you once told me you use that one), and it reports an oil temperature about 50 degrees less than the ET that the Powervision reports. I know oil temperature is not the same thing as engine temperature, but that low number actually surprises me, and I’ve wondered if it is accurate. Kevin, my questions are: (1) what does your Powervision typically report your ET as, (2) what does your Oil Temperature Dipstick typically report your oil temp as, and (3) can you add any information that might sway me to install your oil cooler. Regarding the Harley CoolFlow fan, it’s a Harley product so I know you don’t sell it. And quite frankly, I’m not sure if it does any good, because when the fan is in AUTO mode, the ECM doesn’t seem to think the engine is getting hot enough to ever turn it on (at least, not that I’ve noticed). And even in MANUAL mode it will still turn off above about 30 mph. Also, it will get in the way of the installation of a mechanical reverse, so I don’t know if I would ever recommend that fan. I think my recommendation is to just do all of the DK Customs mods you guys talk about, and let it go at that.

I just watched your video "Understanding Harley Head Temps-Yes, There are Two". It mentions the ECM will retard timing at 265 to 270, resulting in significant power drop off. I have never noticed anything like that. Maybe it's because of the Powervision flash? I just used the flash that Dynojet told me to. Bike always runs strong, regardless of the reported ET. In fact, if anything, it runs rougher when it is first started and still needs to warm up. But then again, the Powervision is almost always reporting under 265 anyway.

You don't say, but I surmise that you have a M8 Trike from the numbers you are reporting. Oil cooler is important, here is a video showing why, and it also may answer some of your other questions- kzbin.info/www/bejne/rYO1pYWPjNJoqNk On a hot day my TG will get the ET, as displayed on the Power Vision, into the 245-260 range, and my oil temp will be in the 210-225 range. It sounds like you have your temps pretty well under control. You do not want your oil to be getting over 230 F, that is when damage to the additive package begins happening. The CoolFlow is for comfort only, it does not cool down the engine or oil at all...it does stop as much heat from radiating out to the rider and more, to the passenger. Yeah, hitting 270 F is not something most people feel while riding, but it is happening, and just like we unconsciously are adjusting the throttle for different road conditions, we adjust it when the timing starts getting pulled. Keeping it under 265 F is really good, and much cooler than most TG's out there since 2014. I bought it new, then immediately put all your cooling mods on, together with your HiFlow 606 air cleaner, your external breather, and V&H slip-ons also purchased from you. I originally tried the FP4, then switched to the Powervision (also from you). I don't have any experience with it stock. Only the final result. Sounds like your trike is running just a little cooler than mine. Not surprising since you have the oil cooler, and relocated oil filter. I've had the electric reverse go out. It was replaced under warranty, but I'm thinking if/when it goes again, I will delete the CoolFlow fan and add a mechanical reverse.

I have a 2016 street glide 103 I put a dip stick with a temp gauge temp 230-260 normal traffic put a fan assist ultra cool and I didn’t think it was working but my oil didn’t want to break 200 it works awesome

Harley has know this for years and should be made to fix every bike they have made and I have notice riding in the fall and winter with the lower vents closed how much more heat there is coming off the engine and now I opened them for summer riding it is different and I have a 2022 tri glide

Glad that My Buell has a factory oil cooler .. with an air scoop. It seems that my 2008 Buell Thunderstorm has Piston Oilers too. If you care cooling the pistons with oil then you definitely need an oil cooler. I just got an oil temp gauge and two head temp gauges. I am curious to see how much E-85 will cool it down .. I found a Flex Fuel kit to install on it ./

We measure the Oil Temp with an oil temp dipstick. You can get digital oil temp sticks from Harley, analog from JES Customs. We measure the Engine heat with a Power Vision or an FP4. Infrared guns are good for comparative readings, but not for objective readings. I have recently installed Advanblack mid-frame air deflectors on my 2022 Road Glide, and love them. Much more comfortable from a riding perspective, and they look cool, so win win. But I have been bombarded by friends who tell me that I am baking my engine by having these on the bike, as the air gets trapped behind the engine and can't escape. I call BS on this...the deflectors are streamlined, and in my opinion, might even help to disperse the heat more effectively by shooting it down along the deflector toward the ground. What does everyone think? Am I way off base on this?

This is a quote from a written report we've done on why and how to cool down your TC and M8; Remove the left side thigh protector. This will help the air flow very fast past the rear cylinder and out the left side...this is good for the engine, and will reduce the amount of felt hot air on the right side. With the right side shield still in place, it acts like an air scoop pulling air into the space behind the cylinder...but with the left side removed, that air can now exit easily. With both installed, they are essentially two scoops that push air from both sides to collide and swirl, with no real good place for the air to exit. It is not symmetrical looking, BUT, you can only see one side at a time, so it is unlikely most will notice you have a thigh protector on one side and not the other. Doing this will cool the engine overall, so while riding & when coming to a stop you have a cooler engine than you would otherwise. However, if you are at a stop long, or in continuous stop & go, you will feel more heat on the left than the right. I never heard of oil cooler cooling an engine. I read the purpose of an oil cooler was to combat the engine overheating the oil and breaking it down and to help with oil longevity. Now I do know manufacturers install oil jets that spray oil under the piston. My understanding is that it is done to help keeping the piston temperatures consistent for performance and anti-knock. My R18 has a 111ci engine and even with the cylinders hanging wide open in the wind with 100 degree OAT, and the engine sitting at prolonged idle, it will hit 270 degrees. I can’t imagine what a V-twin will hit with the engine packed in behind a frame, wheel and fairings and of course one cylinder blocking another cylinder’s airflow.

Yep, what you've heard is correct. Unfortunately there is a Lot of misinformation being bandied about as if it is fact. Thus the reason for the video. It is amazing how many folks, including employees at Harley Dealerships, state things as facts that have no basis in reality. Did you see the comment in the video? "Install an oil cooler with a fan and you'll get REAL results. 75% of all heat in any air cooled motor is taken away by the motor oil." I added an oil cooler to a '71 Triumph Bonneville 50 years ago and ran it 55,000 miles. For the day, that was pretty good longevity. I never thought it was cooling the engine, just keeping the oil a little cooler. I didn't have any understanding of oil chemistry and addatives, it just seemed to make sense that cooler oil lubricated better. With today's lubricants being so much better and oil coolers on so many bikes, 76k miles like on my Victory, is commonplace. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and data on lowering engine temps. I own an '07 Softail Springer living in central Texas. The summers are absolutely brutal. I had lived in the Houston area where the temperature and humidity were extremely high. That really curbed my enthusiasm for summer riding, but since I moved out west of San Antonio, where the humidity is way lower, I find myself riding in the heat more. Does humidity play any role in allowing the engine to run cooler, or is my experience just a factor of rider comfort? Thanks.

This isn't something we have ever accounted for in our testing but just from my understanding of humidity and how there it water vapor displacing oxygen... the bike should run just a tiny bit richer in regards to the air fuel ratio and this means a cooler running engine. I am sure it goes deeper that and some one much more educated on the subject could give you a more informed opinion. I also don't think, in my personal opinion, that it is enough of a factor to worry about though. I do know that when you are riding in a humid area it does seem hotter or more uncomfortable than a less humid area. I hope this is helpful. Thank you for commenting! MB

I was bummed ! This won’t do ! Almost 10 lbs removed from the crank , spins to 6450 rpm’s now , money well spent , almost bought a CVO , but I went Made in the U.S.A. To this day , not one drip of oil , only 7 seals in an old Victory , plus gear drive , no chain , 5 shows , 4 first place trophies and a 3rd , no bike class when I came in 3rd , they put me in the Custom Car category , people always asked ? What kind of Harley is that ? I said it’s a Victory , they replied ? What’s a Victory !

It would seem that would be the case. HOWEVER, we were very surprised by those numbers ourselves, and re-measured them a half dozen times on different runs. Many of us know how much cooler you can ride if you soak a sweatshirt in water at a rest area on a hot day and put that on. I seem to remember as much as an hour of comfort doing that on a hot day. However, for a mister set up on a bike, where would you keep all that water? I'm thinking gallons between gas stops or something , would be required.

Yeah, we have toyed with a mister idea, both for human cooling and engine cooling. Never pursued it seriously. Wet sweatshirt, wetting down a mesh jacket, a cool vest, snap towels, even a bag of ice on the bars melting and the wind blowing back the mist from it.....all those work well to keep cooler. Hi, Question about twin cooled bikes. I have a 2017 twin cooled 114. Does the coolant pump generate enough heat that would benefit from a cover that would allow air flow/venting? I always wonder why the stock cover doesn’t allow any venting. I’ve seen some aftermarket covers that have vents, and wondered if they are needed?? Or would drilling a bunch of holes in the stock cover help or not? What’s your opinion on the pump, and cover design?

Good questions! 👍 The pump generates no significant heat, there would be no measurable difference in coolant temp if the cover was vented, or completely removed. The reason for the cover is that the water pump is plastic, and there are some electrical connections, and all of that is directly behind the front tire. I would not vent it, nor remove it, that would greatly increase the possibility of damage to the actual Plastic pump and/or the wiring. Knock on wood, I have not had a water pump fail in over 100K miles....but I do know there are quite a few that have had pump failures. I cannot say with any data to back up my thoughts, but I have entertained the thought that engines that are running really hot (have had no work done to cool down how they come from the factory) may contribute to failure of the water pump. If you just want a different look for the cover, if you use one that is "vented" like in the link below, I would definitely put a mesh or screen behind it to keep any road debris from going thru the vents and striking the water pump or electrical components. I would also disconnect the connections and apply dielectric grease before reconnecting. Here is a link to a playlist of Why & HOW to cool down your M8. Ok, Here's a strange one that maybe you can help me understand. I got a 103 in an '11 Street Glide. Done a fair bit of mods to it over the years. Anyway, got the heads ported and polished by Big Boyz head porting. Was expecting the oil temperature to go up but what happened is it went down about 10 degrees on average. The bike was dyno tuned before and after the heads were done. Both with an A/F ratio of 13.8:1. I was told that the mirror finished polish of the combustion chamber reflects the heat back into flame which is then exhausted. Any truth to this?

A smooth finish can help in maintaining cleanliness and efficiency but does not significantly alter the thermal dynamics in the way described. The reason for your drop in heat is you are flowing more air now. Getting a better intake charge and the engine not having to work as hard to produce the same power. Enjoy your Ride! KP

I have a question: Without installing a cooling fan or relocating the oil cooler, what do you recommend to help cool my stock 117ci M8 & the oil on my 2023 Low Rider ST? I installed the K&P REUSABLE OIL FILTER, the TRASK VENTED TRANSMISSION TOP COVER, and the TAB PERFORMANCE 2.5 LOUVRE SLIP-ONS. Do you have anything in your inventory to help keep it cooler? Air Deflectors? Tank lift? I have the older version Power Vision Tuner and it can display the engine temperature, but not oil temperature. The engine temp maxxed at 320°F when riding thru hot AZ last month.

I would suggest a digital oil dip stick for being able to measure your oil temperatures. You can get a good one from JES Customs. The vented dipsticks are ok but do NOT take the place of external breather systems and they also do not tell you how hot your oil is getting. There is still hot, oily, oxygen depleted air being fed into the intake. The folks that sell vented dipsticks and trans cover vents, have it right in their product description that they do not prevent all that crap from going into your intake. Here is a copy and paste from the Trask website- "This will reduce the oil exiting from the head breathers..." Even if there is no trace of oil in the intake, there is still hot, oxygen depleted air going into the combustion chambers, making the engine run hotter, and not as strong because of the lower oxygen content. Its true that oil gets hot, and sending that hot oil off to cool will ‘help’ with engine temp However that’s not the purpose of engine oil, it’s purpose is to stop the rubbing metal parts from getting hot……well actually to keep those metal parts from rubbing on other metal parts, and the oil gets squished between them Here’s a test for you, check engine, oil, and muffler temps running 20-50 dino, full, and semi syn……..in air and water cooled….with and without oil cooler

Yes, cooling oil will help cool down engine temps...but not 1 to 1. Depending on the engine, and a variety of other factors, more like a drop of 20 degrees in the oil may see a drop of 3-5 degrees in engine temp. The purpose of oil is to lubricate. Oil that has gotten too hot (damaged additive package) will not lubricate as well. Regarding your suggested tests. We have already done all that you suggested on Harley engines. Yes, the piston oilers do cool down the pistons. How much? We have not measured it, nor do we know anyone who has. But you are absolutely correct, some of the heat generated by the engine is absorbed by the oil, cooling down the metal. Additionally, there are some oils that result is less heat from friction. All that said, if you then use an oil cooler that cools the oil temp down by 20 F, because there is not a linear relationship between oil temps and engine heat temps, you may see a 5F drop in oil temps. @@DKCustomProducts Hi Guys, We are in agreement on the difference between engine heat and oil heat They both can be leading indicators for each other. I collect a lot of data on my bikes. You have to have a baseline. I use both mechanical and electronic gages. Marlins gage and sensors and freeze frame data. 114 Twin cam Ultra glide. Oil sensor in the tank. Head temp (actually engine temp in my book, it uses a head bolt for a probe) rear roadside head bolt rear cylinder. Head temp for ECM in the front cylinder. In the past I would just use the Marlin set up on carbed bikes. I have an Ultracool system on the above bike with their HY Flo oil filter. Let me tell you, this is by far the best cooling system I have ever had on one of my bikes. Yesterday I rod e to Greenbay. I took my cold weather covers off. Rode the 60 miles one way at 80mph each way. The rear head never got above 260 and the oil never got higher than 180. I haven't checked the ecm yet I will this afternoon. Having said all of that a good tune is still the best heat moderator. The piston jets are a take on an old school automotive trick drilling a rod and bearing to get oil sprayed in the cylinder. Harley must have decided they needed it. You fellas Have a great day!

Since I have target tune or maybe it was there before and I am Able to display CHT Cylinder head temp & engine temp. So apparently the Et on powervision is not coming from the sensor on front head because the CHT reads close to 100 degrees higher the ET. So does anyone know where actual engine temperature sensor is ??

Having one cylinder directly behind the other, whether in a V formation or parallel, might've been OK in the 1920s when engines didn't make much horsepower but more horsepower means more heat and today's engines make many times more than they did then and yet the cooling system on H-Ds has not changed. Why would anyone buy a bike with such a flawed engine design that causes it to overheat?

Some have worked well, others not so much. I have bought multiple products for cooling my bike from you guys and always looking for more. I have a 2009 Road king and wondered if adding one of the rear cylinder wind deflectors would help cool my bike any? I have a tank lift but without a fairing and lowers didn’t want to add the front cooling wing deflectors I feel like they would stick out (maybe I’m wrong just most examples I’ve seen have been on bike with fairings). If you are talking about the thigh protector you could certainly add the right side thigh protector and it will route more air over the top of the heads and help in cooling, but you do not want the left side on. Also you can see the 15th and 16th picture on the Cooling Deflector Wings description page, is without fairings, and you can see about how much they stick out. They actually don't stick out as much as you would think. Very nice! 👍😎👍 Yes, unfortunately, many of the newer models (starting in 2007, and then some even worse starting in 2014) can see oil temps going as high as 300 F. A good synthetic oil will still lubricate, even with temps that high. The problem is the viscosity modifiers in dino and synthetic will begin breaking down around 250 F., measured at the dipstick. I have a Road Glide Special...not sure I understand the debate in this video.. My bike comes with an oil cooler, that I understand is even bigger than the twin cams smaller oil cooler. I also added an OEM Harley oil cooling fan that keeps cooling the oil when the bike is just idling sitting in traffic.

Oil coolers are great to have and certainly help keep your oil at a lower temperature. This video was just about the engine needing its on cooling components because the oil staying cool will not cool your engine. Harley engines are Air Cooled therefor getting more air to the engine is the best/only true way to cool down your engine. Thank you for commenting! MB

I just added a ultracool oil cooler on my Roadglide-ST. I do most of my riding in the county and interstate. But even the bike constantly moving the summer’s here in Louisiana are so hot during the summer the motor just suffers from it. That’s with a aftermarket full pipe, Powervision tuner. Heat indexes here get to around 115 or so with 100 percent humidity. It’s not easy trying to keep an air cooled motor here cool. Keep up the good work guys.

Look at the racing baggers cooling set ups. Expanded jug fins, air directing cowlings, and if your fancy go e85 or some alcohol system. I drift my 240sx, terribly and yes its always being fixed, and oil coolers, oil catches, dual fans, electric water pump, etc... all cost buku bucks man

Don’t worry about the haters. I had those little plastic things that deflect the air on the road glide to keep buffeting down. When I was down in FL bike was getting rrallly hot so I pulled em off. They were blocking air from going over the heads. Pulled those off after remembering what yall said about fangs and these sort of things .. unless they are built to route air AT the motor. Keep the info coming *re the heated shit in August .. I carry my rain gear all the time. No matter of weather shows a drought for 3 weeks. Always be prepared. I keep 3 different types of gloves at all times. Gotta be prepared! Always .. well ya do if you’re about this life not just a casual rider

Ha... I have a Road King and a Wide Glide both and only. Just found it funny that you mentioned both of my bikes in contrast. ...and man, they are a contrast. My question is about riding in Scottsdale AZ summer heat... is that an issue with Harleys? I live in the cold country now and am considering moving down to AZ to roast in my old age. Anyway, can a Harley handle Phoenix valley heat?

One thing I noticed on my 21 Triglide still with the 114 and SE torque cam is the rpm you cruise at can make about a 10 degree difference in engine temperature. Me and my wife were out riding last weekend and it was sunny and 89 degrees and I was noticing my engine temperature getting up around 283 and I think my oil temp was right about 200 and I was cruising right around 2700rpms to be inline with the speed limit of 65mph. I got to a point where I decided I wanted to cruise around 72mph and that brought the rpm up to around 3000 to 3200 depending on if there were any inclines in the road. My engine temperature dropped consistently to 273 to 277 degrees. I guess with the engine pumping more air and more fuel that seemed to cool it off. Your thoughts?

I agree, it is exactly what you are assuming... You found a sweet spot where efficiency shines through. Enrichened fuel delivery, increased air intake, even increased air flow by way of faster headwinds. Now, if you ramp it up to 4k rpm, you could generate enough power to increase temps but this is all assuming you are reading the direct Engine temp from the sensor. If your device is showing you a number calculated from speed, rpm, IAT, MAP, TPS, temp sensor, etc you may not be getting an accurate before/after reading. But if this is the ET reading from the Powervision, you can bank on the temp readings. Thanks for sharing! -DS

A Power Vision or FP4 would measure your engine temps and you could get a digital oil dipstick from JES Customs to monitor the oil temperature. That is what we use on our bikes and they work great! HD's forays into fully water cooled engines have been a failure so far(the Pan America and the new Sportsters, which are not really selling)...they have not found a design that appeals to very many buyers. So, I’ve a 2016 Heritage. I live in one of the driest, dusty, hottest areas - southern Arizona. From the end of May and into September we could have over 100 degree weather. 110 plus due in the true summer. I’ve found using Mobil 1 VTwin full synthetic 20w50 the best oil for this type of heat and wear and tear. ( better then any Harley oil or Amsoil) What could I do help reduce my overall engine temperature?

@@paulhorvath9784 do you own due diligence research. Get past the commercial google pushed top search queries. There are independent studies by much smarter people ( oil industry experts with PhD and stuff) that you can find. Amsoil is great and so is the SYN from HD. But reviewing the technical details and aspects Mobil 1 was a little better with some results. Primarily the heat temp of the oil and the breakdown of the oil. The molecular structure was “better” than SYN3 or Amsoil after 5k of use. I’m not an expert, I just did a ton of research ( non biased) because I was an Amsoil guy. Personally, the motor does less pings, knocks, and noise after it’s shuts off. Less than any other oil that I’ve used.

The M8 Softails are one of the things Harley did a bunch of good changes on. They got the Tank up off of the engine, so there is more air flow over it, they got the coil over on the side so it is not blocking air behind the rear cylinder, and they also put a REALLY big oil cooler on it that does a good job keeping the oil below 230 F. You can believe what you choose. However, if you are inferring that we would rig test results to promote any of our parts, that would be a false belief. Case in point: We have a lot of M8 Softail owners that would buy an oil cooler from us if we said they needed one. BUT, we did testing on oil temps for M8 Softails and found out that HD has done a great job on the OEM oil cooler on those bikes and No additional oil cooling is needed. I have a m8, on my power vision et claims to run at around 320 typically on a hot summer day. I assume that is at the rear cylinder head sensor location. My oil temps ride between 205 and 215. I have wondered for a while if I'm too hot. I have watched your videos on cooling and what the bike does at 270. But I haven't felt that loss. I know there is things I could do at this point like an oil cooler fan. But my question is that 270 temp is that et at rear cylinder head sensor or oil temp? Thanks guys!

If your oil is really running around 205-215° that is great it just needs to stay below 230°. It does sound like you still have some work to do to get your heads cooled down. @@DKCustomProducts I'm running target tune with widebands also. Bike runs strong with cam, plugs do not look too lean. Maybe I should try to add fuel across the graph or change target AFR to see if it will cool it down.

Going from a so-so tune to a great tune will only cool the engine down about 10-15 degrees...which is good, but usually more than that is needed to get engine temps down.
