It's so refreshing to hear DEVIATED INSTINCT saying that yes we ARE crust when others won't acknowledge it. Iove their overall attitude & in the late 80s they were one of the bands that gave the teenage me the courage to tell everybody else "There's fuck all wrong with me so if you don't like that's your problem not mine"

Lovely & honest. Looking back when you didn't experience or witness the formation & influence of these bands in the present moment, you'd think they did exactly as they joked about: invented a whole wack of genres, but they were just playing in the style of the bands they liked. This is what music is -- playing what you like, how you like. It's then up to the marketing moguls to label it sensationally & sell it.

You're not the only one mate. It's an ace of an album. Takes some time getting into it, but it's worth it.

1990 or 91 I reckon. Duchess Of York venue in Leeds , with the mighty PROPHECY OF DOOM. Scandalously too few heads there , but both bands played with real heart , even though Shrew was a bit dismayed at the low turn out.

The venue had advertised a different gig for that day so people kept turning up expecting to see the Boo Radleys and then just turned round and gone home when they discovered some long haired punks instead 😉

@@Midbait 😂😂HAHAHA...NEVER!!??!...The Boo Radleys😂 Cheers Mid , its great to learn why - after all these years. Especially when its so funny. Great to learn you boys are still doing the rounds too. (Re' the interview) A bit dismal that half the crowd buggered off when the local band left the stage and you went on... PEASANTS!!😉

Wow what a lot of nonsense is spouted in this interview! The facts are that Deviated Instinct were absolutely NOT "early adopters" of punk-metal crossover aka crust. They were still doing anarcho drone by the middle of 1986. Long after the likes of Amebix, Antisect, Concrete Sox, Heresy had established the new popular direction did this band latch on and follow. In this interview they speak as though they were pioneers in 84/85, which is a total fallacy. It's funny to watch them rewrite history here with a fictional account. They know younger fans will believe them, but those of us in Brum, Leeds, London, Norwich and Ipswich at the time know what really happened. Deviated Instinct were a second wave crust band who followed the important bands of the era.

Had absolutely nothing to do with the birth of death metal or anything else. These guys were still doing an out of time version of slow punks Icons of Filth two years after death metal started.
