--------
In this clip, Vlad spoke to DL Hughley about his sit-down with Carlos Mencia, and DL Hughley joined the conversation expressing his affection for Mencia and his sympathy for how Mencia's career took a fall after allegations of joke stealing surfaced. Both Hughley and Vlad noted that 'cancelling' is a common experience in the world of comedy and does not necessarily signal the end of one's career, as demonstrated by Mencia's continued work in smaller clubs. They also tackled the issue of joke stealing in the comedy industry. They suggested that all comedians are influenced by others and everyone copies jokes to some extent. DL Hughley stressed that such 'stealing' is often a matter of coincidence or subconscious influence rather than intentional plagiarism. To hear more, including DL speaking about Dennis Miller making accusations about him, hit the above clip.

I went to a comedy club in Sacramento back on 1997. Carlos Mencia was saying a bunch of anti-black and anti rap jokes because the crowd was mostly white. Then I saw him on tv months later being all pro-black at a black comedy show. Every since then I’ve been like F that mofo Carlos Mencia.

No he wasn't the first comedian to get cancelled, it was Andrew Dice Clay who was cancelled in 1993. He lost everything for his controversial stand-up, he had different groups protest his shows, and he was cancelled from Sitcoms, television appearances, he lost his sponsors, movie roles. He had to make a come back 25 years later. He was the biggest stand-up comedian star in the world. Breaking attendance records, selling 80,000 to 70,000 set arena, selling out MSG, he was on all the iconic talk shows, late night and daytime, commercials, movie appearances, games shows... for 5 years he ruled the comedy world. Until his agency dropped him and he lost everything. He was the very first comedian to ever get cancelled. For his controversial comments.

@@-Jeo- He said a lot things about women, the women's groups came after him and he was saying homophobic stuff...I was around back then and I loved him, he was hilarious ASF! People don't understand you had sensitive people back then too. Plus it was a very religious era, Christianity took over the country back then, We had a Republican President, George Bush Sr. And it was a very conservative time and religious groups came after him, the Pope condemned him, he was basically getting it from all sides. Women's groups would yell at him and protest. Back then if you said anything about religion it was over for you. Look what happened to (Sinead O' Connor) that singer, from the early 90's, her career was destroyed for disrespecting the Pope because back then she was protesting the abuse of young boys in Catholic churches...she was ahead of her time. And the whole world came on her and she lost everything and never recovered. She knew what them Prest were doing to young boys for decades ...now everyone knows she was right the whole time because 2 decades later the Catholic Church was experiencing there own controversy when thousands of men came forward saying they were raped and sexually abused by Prest throughout the decades. Andrew Dice Clay Even had the president back then Condemned him. He had so many groups attack him. It was really pitty and silly he was a well known raunchy standup comedian...he was ahead of his time. So you had your wokeism back then too but we just didn't see the whole scope of it because there was no social media back then...back then people were still cancelled but it was more on the low, they would lose roles, and never get hired for work. Andrew Dice Clay literally disappeared from public eye around 1993....and he popped up in 2012 on podcasts again. He is now doing stand-up again and movies as he has been welcome with open arms and forgiven. He was called women hater, Misogynistic, sexist, homophobic, religion hater, women would walk out of his shows in droves. He had different groups protest his shows and cause chaos outside. He was being interrogated in interviews. He even broke down on stage during a stand-up set, he broke down on a interview because he was losing everything and being blackballed. The pressure got to him and he lost everything...his money opportunities were taken from him and he had the same experience as Carlos...he had to do stand up in small bars well crawling his way back. He made a big comeback and played Lady Gagas father in the 2018 movie (A Star Is Born) starring Brandley Cooper.

Heavy? Bro if you don't know what happened between the Rogan Mencia thing you aint heavy. Mencia destroyed his career by faking who he was. He is a German-Honduran named Ned, who said he was Mexican. His routine and standups where about something he was not. On top of that he just took his openings acts jokes and just put Mexican in it. His own fans dumped him. His numbers dropped because it became known he was doing ''Mexican-face''. The only one who suffered at that point was Joe Rogan. The Comedy-Store in L.A., the biggest club in the industry, banned him for 7years almost. They both had the same Agency representing then, and they dumped Rogan in favor of Mencia because at the time he was making more money for them. But Joe had other things going for him, on top with the podcast he connected with his fan-base that made JRE today.

I'm going to be real. The Carlos thief thing never made sense to me because the only real bit that seemed like he lifted was the Bill Cosby bit and there's comedians that have bits that I swore I heard before word for word. It's not hard to have a premise and tell the joke similarly with the premise. Like the Ari Shamir border joke they claim Carlos stole someone when that shit was first happening did a compilation with comedians telling the same joke verbatim to ow Ari said it and they did it before and after Ari. I think Carlos was probably a jerk when he was coming up and bumped a lot of the comedians who eventually became headliner level comedians and they all jumped on the joke thief stuff to get him out of the community.

The comedy world is super competitive. THey are ALWAYS sizing each other up, studying each other's approaches, comparing themselves, etc. When you're looking that hard you're going to see whatever you want. 90% of the time comedians are accused of stealing jokes it's just clearly they were inspired by the same things. It's like if musicians had the nerve to accuss each other of stealing their songs every time they heard the same beat, chords or similar lyrics.

One of the biggest comedians that he has stolen from is Bill Cosby. Just the idea of someone stealing something for you, that you have, brainstormed over, rewrite, worked out for hours, if not days or years, performed is the utmost disrespect. The late great Patrice O'Neal had an interesting take on Carlos which provides a possible motivation. He said that Carlos became addicted to killing an audience with laughter. He said that in order to grow as a comedian you have to learn how to tell a joke and not have the audience laugh. You have to become comfortable with silence. Essentially, you have to embrace bombing, and Carlos never learned to do that.

There seems to be a trend of conservative comedians (Dennis Miller, Joe Rogan) trying to cancel minority comedians (D.L.Highley, Carlos Mencia) who they deem incapable of coming up with the material they do.

Carlos absolutely stole some jokes. Hell his entire persona was fake. He was a dude who was pretending to be Mexican, using a fake Mexican name and taking other comedians jokes and slapping Mexican on it. That was his one thing and when that quickly got stale people stopped caring about him. His popularity was already on a decline from that then it took a nosedive when word about the stuff he was doing got out. Can't say I'm surprised DL has his back considering DL took some of Robin Harris' bits word for word and used one or two on Kings of Comedy.

I can see what DL is saying and why they consider it petty. Carlos definitely stole jokes. But he wasn’t the only one. Amy Schumer has done it and nobody ganged up on her. I’m sure all the comedians know who the joke stealers are but they chose to only go at Carlos and everybody pitched in on it. Some of them were probably doing it for the purity of standup comedy. The rest of them most likely did it cause Carlos was big and they weren’t.

The problem with what Vlad is saying is there are too many examples of Mencía stealing jokes time and time again. And many comedians saw him do it first hand. Even his friend bobby. No one ever accuses Dave Chappelle of stealing jokes or bill Burr or Louie CK.
