Hi, great video, I had read how to do this but needed to see a video to know whether I can do this myself, or if I should get a mechanic to do it (I have lots of car mechanical experience, but not motorbikes). Also really helpful to know what tools and things are required before starting the job, and other tips like the cardboard cut-out, very handy. It's great that you have taken the time to show people how to do this.

Regarding the loose chain, yes its might be better than a tight one but as long as its not too loose. The tools that come with the bike are fine if you on the road and you cannot get your hands on more precise tools.The "feel the right torque" is a matter of choice that not all people have the skills for it. My opinion on wax oil is the same as yours and yes you need to have a warm chain for it to be best applied. Hope it helps

I don't know what is the procedure for L0 model, but for DL650 K8 service manual states that you should measure chain slack on side-stand. If you adjust chain at the center-stand, chain will be to tight.
@markhorton70138 жыл бұрын
Best way to adjust drivechain is using a rear paddock stand (Not on the centre stand with the rear wheel hanging and not under any load)... by using the stand you're putting the natural weight of the bike on the slackness of the drivechain and you'll get a more accurate reading. If you don't have a paddock stand then do the job with the bike on the side stand. This is do-able but not as straightforward and easy.
@zlatkoreder4617 жыл бұрын
You are right Mark. You cannot and should not adjust the chain without any load. If you adjust it without load then it is already too tight - or in another words the slack is not enough. Now two people sit on it and you have a problem with too much tension which may provoke serious problems.

This is an excellent video. I've never been this precise cleaning chains, but after viewing I can see the value of doing it right. With that said, I've take extreme care of chains and got 30 000 km's of use, and then pretty much ignored them and got 20 000 km's. Not sure if the work is worth it? Also, was wondering about o-ring vs x-ring, which one is better? Finally, are the stock sprockets just as good for this bike, given it's normal uses, than the more expensive aluminum after markets?

@BlackMountainCow12 жыл бұрын
Doesn't the manual actually say, to tighten the chain while on the SIDE stand, not the CENTER stand. 2-3cm on the center stands is a different story than 2-3cm on the side stand. On the center stand, the rear wheel shock is extended all the way, on the side stand it isn't. And that changes the stretch of the chain.

Hello Doctor, I've set it up for 2,5 cms. Good lubricated. But I hear a very bad sound during the ride. It makes a sound like: HART HART HART HART , periodically. What does this mean ? PS: during the chain check on centerstand, there's a tight place. The other sides of the chain is looser than it.
@DrVstrom4 жыл бұрын
What about alignment? Did you make sure equal distance from both sides? Also spin the wheel by hand and try and pinpoint which part of the chain the sound might be coming from. The amount of loose chain should be check with the bike on the side stand . This notice is from the english canadian owner's manual page 6-23 . Not very practical since you have to check multiple spot on the rear sproket at different clock arrangement ( nothing perfectly round ). But those value 2-3 cm of chain slack are good only with the bike on the side stand . Couldn't be the same value on the center-stand since the swing-arm gonna be in full extend .

This is not a forum my friend. The numbers are correct. If you wanna 100% accurate results add slack 0,5 with my method or use the side stand with the numbers on the video.
@MGL839 жыл бұрын
***** Never mind the numbers - I just meant the measuring technique. So correct way of measuring is the distance when chain is pulled up to pulled down? So far I thought it should be from it's neutral position to pulled up. If I was wrong I should really check my chain asap.
@IoannisParapontis9 жыл бұрын
Yes, it is the whole distance up and down combined. Also first measure the distance from the center of the front sprocket to the center of the middle sprocket and go in the middle to take your measurements. Then find the tightest spot of the chain where the up down distance is the min and then do the adjustments at this part (cm mentioned in your manual) while in the side stand.
