I am so so glad it made it safely. I told those knuckleheads 5 times how to pack it... but alas , they never listen. Enjoy it Terry and it was nice to meet Paul - a really nice guy. Enjoy

I gad one of those back in 1969. Great receiver then, and I kinda wish I still had it today.

I was recently given a Hallicrafters from that era that is in amazing condition, as well as a speaker that is similar to the one at the top of your stack. If I ever get time, I will go through them and bring them back to life. I haven't done any DXing since I was a teenager. I'd like to try it again before I leave this world.

Sixty years ago, when I was a child, I remember we hat a German tube radio. The vacuum tubes were kind of a precursor to transistors. If you turned on the tube radio, you had to wait 15 or 30 seconds for the radio to work, the tubes had to warm up first. That old tube radio had excellent reception in LW, MW and SW. I love this kind of radio. Thank you for the interesting video.

The first decent radio I ever used. When I was in Jr. High and and my mentor, the shop teacher, who I knew to be a ham from his car licence plate brought his SX-25 and his homebrew CW/AM transmitter. I learned Morse (again) with a new ham friend at Scout Camp. This shop teacher and I set up the station, erected a Zepp antenna and I used far more than my Heath AT-1 and S 38D at home. I operated every noon hour, study hall time and after school until he went home. He gave me my Novice test and mentored me for General Class five months later.

Just saw an old Superman episode ( c.1953) yesterday that had it and another Halli receiver (S-38) used as background in a scientist's lab. Not too far on the same long shelf was an RCA 155 oscilloscope. Probably war surplus shopped by studio gophers ( paid to shop for certain prop items) needed in television and movies even back then. Awesome receiver and nice you finally got one again Terry.

Terry, You lucky dog. I saw my first SX-25 when I initially began doing antique radio repairs and decided it was the receiver for me, but soon realized I hadn't the required technical knowledge to repair and restore one. Later on, I decided to someday get a Hallicrafters SX-43, but that also didn't happen until years later when Ron C, out of the blue, sent me one. It's now been fully restored and sits in one of the empty bedrooms. Ron C is a terrific, altruistic gentleman, always willing to help another, but be forewarned...he does bear watching.😂 Regards, John

Oh, solche alten Kisten hatte ich früher auch in meiner Sammlung. Nun sind die Geräte etwas kleiner geworden. Der Transistor hat Einzug genommen...

I had that SX 25 unit in my room when I was 14 years old during the 1960's. I listened to it every day with headphones. Bill Cosby had a program called The Old Man on the Mountain. Yes, he really did sound far away. When I went off to college, my mom put it in an outside store room. We had terrible winds in the Los Angeles area and a tree branch broke the fiberglass roof and water leaked on the radio for months. It was unceremoniously tossed out at the big garbage pickup.

I like the sound of the old tube radio's. They seem much more powerful and sensitive than the solid state types. Maybe it's my imagination.

Guy sent me a Viking Messenger 'white-face' cb radio with about 3 wadded up sheets of newspaper, luckily, I had insured it & post office paid. Several other vintage radios have miraculously arrived un-damaged despite having virtually no padding, one the power transformer was knocked loose. Luckily it was basically junk-spare parts anyway. Always a gamble. That radio is gorgeous, love it!

I made the same mistake of having the UPS Store pack a 1938 Philco radio for shipment to an ebay customer. I told them do NOT pack the power cord inside the radio. Well you guessed it, they packed the power cord inside and it destroyed half the tubes inside. The customer was very kind and did not request a refund. I will never trust UPS to pack anything again.

a tip for unboxing heavy stuff without the turning and tossing: put it on the table, cut along the bottom edge of the box and lift the "lid" . your back will thank you ;-)

I had a SX25 when I was a teenager. I plugged it in and soon after the radio started playing, flames came out of the underside of the power transformer and was visible through the slots cut in the chassis. I did not know at the time about faulty capacitors.

Reminds me of how I got my Hallicrafters SX-28 Super Skyrider. Receiver. Somebody in the club just gave it to me. He got it from a family that did not know what to do with it. It was not something that he wanted to necessarily keep, but wanted to make sure it went to a good home. It's a little off frequency, but it appears to have been recapped in the past, maybe long past. The caps are Pyramid and General Instrument. Don't know when they were popular. Do you? 73 Paul AA1SU

Re your UPS Store experience: UPS Stores are not a part of UPS - they are franchise operations, individually owned, and I have no idea if UPS monitors their performance.
