Wow what a memory flashback when I saw that sticker. I know the area like the back of my hand. This repair shop was around about 50 years ago before we had area codes. Exchange 698 was also used for some parts of Milton (the town next door). Boy do I feel old now. 73 OM

You was playing with the devil turning that tuning cap with your bare hands :).. I don't know the schematic for that radio but often there can be hundreds of volts on those lol.

@@randysterling4700 Why would you say that? Why are some people so mean. My friend was an electronic repair man and got knocked on his ass and almost died from touching a tuning cap like that and the chassis at the same time. I also said I dont know the schematic so maybe its not high voltage on it.. Why be so rude :(.

The closest off the shelf paint I could get to touch up small scratches and chips on the S 40B was a small bottle of TESTORS enamel "graphite metallic" which seemed to be about a match, certainly invisible from any distance. Hobby shops may have it. It may be not ideal if you have a really large area that needs repainted. But it is cheap. Cheaper than custom blended paint. I doubt it would match some other versions of the radio necessarily.

I still have my old caps from my Hallicrafters S-40B. Maybe I should make a Waxbot? I'll need a schematic, of course. 73 & Merry Christmas from Paul AA1SU in Vermont.

Some years ago I got one of those for 15$ and overhauled it. The pain of the alignment is those coils have some kind of hard wax poured in on top of the ferrite slugs, that can be difficult to clear out enough to adjust them. And band D is not so great, especially towards the high freq. end. My rubber grommets that support the tuning cap had rotted so I had to replace them. You need the cap in the right position to line up the tuning index good for dial tracking. You can get a very good tracking of dial cal with those if everything is square and you take the time. I think the bandspread tunes down from higher freq. or something. I guess you align with bandspread at zero but follow the Halli. instructions because I just go by memory here. Mine was a good sounding receiver when finished.

Brilliant. Merry Christmas Terry, I have recapped 3 Hallicrafters I have but what caps did you use to replace the wax dripping horrors? Cheers from OZ but on holidays in Bulgaria. VK5LB
