Jeff and Lana continue their read-along of the fifth novel in the Tales of the Malazan Book of the Fallen series by Steven Erikson, entitled Midnight Tides.
They start off with a NON-Spoiler topic, submitted by ylevre3285 on KZbin. What about non-book author output? Blogs, podcast, interviews? What do you seek out?
Then, they discuss in detail the events of chapters 15 and 16 of the novel.
Special thanks to Emily Bachynski for the DLC Bookclub theme song. Find more of her work at www.badbuddy.b...

I always read Trull as a lone voice of reason so it was interesting hearing your decidedly different interpretation of how he’s reacting. Anyhow, my favorite excerpt from these chapters: “‘Maybe they deserved it. Maybe they did something-’ ‘Feather Witch, the question of what is deserved should rarely, if ever, be asked. Asking it leads to deadly judgement, and acts of unmitigated evil. Atrocity revisited in the name of justice breeds its own atrocity.”

Ohhhhhh my what an episode. I think I laughed out loud more than any other episode. Lana - “water is important, how about that” Jeff - “it’s called Midnight Tides” Lana - “holy shit I’m dumb” 😂 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 - okay so Trull. Being pouty. Y’all wonder if this is the best WAY to be pouty and I ask you: what else should he do? Not a lot of options. He could… try to fight Rhulad. lol. He could… run away, refusing to participate in the war, become a hermit. He could… go along like a floppy toddler, doing nothing, just existing silently in the same space as his whole society. Or, he could try to influence that society for the better from the inside, while trying to fight for that society and do “what’s right,” whatever that means. What I’m saying is, cut him some slack :) you can make fun of him, he’s absolutely an emo crybaby and it’s pretty funny sometimes. But hey, he’s doing his best!!!! - Rud Elalle and the dream sequence. Hoo boy don’t stress about this. More to come. You got the important parts for now - Yan Tovis, called Twilight!!! Twilight!!! - IRON BARSSSSSSSS!! What a heroic and impactful entrance. Just kills Rhulad easy-peasy, no biggie. Takes care of Seren. Brings some welcome reminders of the rest of the world… just all around badass - speaking of Rhulad dying - lol. Absolutely tragic and horrendous but somehow darkly comic at the same time, as y’all say - and another impactful character intro: Sandalath. You didn’t say her name so maybe she wasn’t named yet… but don’t worry, not a spoiler really. The former Andii wraith that the crippled god “rezzed” lol. What an interesting start to her time in the story. More to come! Okay that’s enough. These chapters are unusual in that they’re effectively 2 Edur chapters in a row (although with Seren and the Crimson Guard to break it up). So don’t worry - back to Tehol and Bugg next week!!!

I know it doesn't matter (it really doesn't matter), but 'Elalle' is pronounced with the last 'e' silent. More LOL than Lolly, kinda. But not LOL either; more like rhyming with 'Val' or 'Gal.' El-al with the accent on the second syllable. And Silchas Ruin, where 'Silch' sounds like 'Filch.' So, if it doesn't matter and really, it doesn't (it doesn't), why am I bringing it up? It's not you, it's me. I just sort've do a little flinch every time one of you voices your pronunciation of 'Elalle.' So there it is. I'm weak.

Thank you kindly, and while we’re on the subject of pronunciation… is ‘Brys’ pronounced Brice like rice or Bris like Chris?

Esselmont deals with the Crimson guard brilliantly , they have an amazing story, akin to the Bridgeburners in many ways. Regarding "demons" remember Pearl from Gardens of the Moon he is the exact example of the description.

The "I don't believe in religion" thing could also go in another direction: "I acknowledge that there are godly beings but I'm convinced that worshiping them is pointless because they won't actually do anything for us. So why bother?" Edit: Also, this and the next chapter have my favorite inconsequential "on a re-read" moment.

I like this. I also thought it could be more of a reference to the organization/structure of religions rather than the worship of gods.

My same thought when they said that about gods. Religion is the worship. You can acknowledge a god but refuse to worship.

Lana I think you are onto something, Midnight tides probably has thematic ties to the sea or something like that

Such a great episode, and so much happening in it. Lana caught on well that water and sea are very important themes and concepts for this book. Hold on to that thought. Adding to what you two were discussing and thinking about, I think now I can safely put it here: Memories of Ice Chapter 23: When Ganoes Paran goes inside the beast warren mistakenly when looking for Anomander Rake, he hears lots of voices, and a part of that is this : "The Edur have sworn to destroy Mother Dark. You must warn him! Poisoned souls, led by the one who has been slain a hundred times, oh, ’ware this new Emperor of the Edur, this Tyrant of Pain, this Deliverer of Midnight Tides!"

I remember reading another book that described Demons exactly the same way! I have to find it. The Myth Adventure Series by Robert Lynn Asprin which is light and funny fantasy series has a similar description of Demons.
