Jeff and Lana continue their read-along of the fifth novel in the Tales of the Malazan Book of the Fallen series by Steven Erikson, entitled Midnight Tides.
They start off with a NON-Spoiler topic, submitted by Plae Burns. If you were a mage in the Malazan world, which Warren would you draw upon?
Then, they discuss in detail the events of chapters 20 and 21 of the novel.
Special thanks to Emily Bachynski for the DLC Bookclub theme song. Find more of her work at www.badbuddy.b...

Breeze! Lana, nice catch on the Seren Pedac instinctive manipulation as it relates to her past relationships. Thanks again to you both for brightening my day. Be well.

That part with Seran and her asking to have her traumatic memory erased was always super powerful to me, and I have since read a book called The Myth of Normal by Gabor Maté. In it, he explains how trauma isn't the thing that happens to you, it's the effect that thing had on you, that's the trauma. So, you can pull out the knife, but that doesn't heal the wound. It really changed the way I look at things and my past and it's also such a testament to Erikson's depth as a person and a writer that he has the same observations on trauma as someone who studies it for a living. Book good!

I don’t know if I prefer having you highlight portions that didn’t stand out to me or the same exact excerpts as me but both of you covered nearly everything I highlighted this week and I love it. However, I think we sometimes miss out on the depth of the chapter and book introductions so, I’ll highlight part of the intro to book four: “Yet my flesh is warm, the blood neither still in my veins Nor cold, my breathing joining this wind That carries these false cries, I am banished Alone among the crowd and no more to be seen The stirrings of my life face their turned backs The shudders of their will, and all love is dust Where I now walk, to the pleasure of none Cut raw, the stones piled, the grey wall rising. BANISHED KELLUN ADARA”

Wowowow it’s really revving up isn’t it. This book really is insanely good all the way through isn’t it? Not sure I have any insightful comments this week but - it brings me so much joy watching y’all appreciate Malazan so deeply. The humor is incredible but it’s made more incredible by your appreciation of it. The prose and themes are incredible but they’re made more incredible by your appreciation of them. And so on :) I can’t imagine reading the next 2 chapters and having to wait a week for the final chapter and epilogue so… if I were you I’d probably be weak and finish it, and then just reread chapter 25 and epilogue the next week. And that could work but then next week you’d have to try to fake not knowing the very end 😂😂😂 that could be troublesome!! Oh also -- although I rarely (never) comment on them, I do deeply appreciate the “favorite passages” section to end each episode. Hearing the prose is always welcome, and hearing what stuck out to you both is always great!!! Anyway. This is a Jeff and Lana appreciation post. Forever the target audience for Malazan. Keep it up y’all, I’m reacting here along with you and excited for the end of this book !!!! ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤

I find it interesting some of the scenes you both voice & summarize as more humerous than I read it. Could just be your fun personalities, but with the scene of Trull with Fear & Ulruth I very much read it as intense :D

After some earlier drum practice I must have left KZbin sitting at 1.5x speed - that opening dance was a whole new level of delightful. Thanks for taking me through these incredible books.
