Solid info there! I would add: Look at the plunger bearings that ride in the chamber floor and look for signs of excessive wear on the pickup head. Rebuilding them isn't fun and VERY expensive!

Definitely good information. I’ve heard those knotters were a pain. Y’all stay safe too. ✌️

Looking to buy a baler this summer or fall for next year. I wish you would actually show how to check that stuff instead of just talking about it. I have never owned or run a square baler only just round balers, and my small farm budget can't afford a new one.

I don't know what to say. I'm sorry you feel that way, seems the 14 other comments were in favor of what I spoke of. 3200 views and you are making it my fault you are ill equipped mechanically to buy used equipment.

Never messed with the gear drives, Always make sure all the timing marks line up.. never knew the knotter should be so tight that it doesn't fall.. they need to be tight together, but you can't tell if it's preload or lack of lubrication if you are just going by free fall. Wether it's 2, 3, 4, 5 or 6 knotters, one will always be a problem child!!! We are on our second Hesston (Massey now) 16"×18" in line, both had issues with the right knotter.. On the Hesston 4900, #3 is the pain in the @$$!! #5 likes to act up sometimes and #6 thinks it's fun to play a few times a season... Should just change the whole works, but it's cheaper to trade it in for a newer one..

the rate at which they fall indicates if the wiper arm is set properly.it needs to slide gently into place not fall. Replacement parts don't come with timing marks. you need to make those yourself. there are very few timing marks on the 5070. one set for the plunger arm and one on the outside cam .

@@DLKHAY wiper arms are there own deal, they should not be dragging when the knotter is down to the pin. Had the dealer send out a "baler mechanic" about ten years ago.. LMAO, he thought you could just keep making the knife arm tighter and tighter.. I've got 40 years experience in knotters, he had about a week of factory baler school. YUP.. brand new $80 wiper arm with three days on it... Took two days to get another $80 arm😠 I miss the days when we traded small balers every 500k.. every other year, a new one 😎 Now with mainly running the big baler, we just keep running it.. (1996 model, everything but the Knotters, plunger and gearbox has been replaced.... Oh, and the chamber, it's got "bale skis" so it will last forever 👍
