I am going to re-upload this. It blanks out early on a few times and doesnt show the picture I posted properly. If anyone has a good lead on an i7 laptop please let me know. My HP is showing its age. Its not a good editing machine.
In this video I go over the how's and why's for DLP light tunnel adjustment. Sometimes these parts are called an integrator, or a light rod. Its a small piece of glass or set of mirrors that collimate the light into a solid beam without an uneven brightness. It points that light on to the DMD via the shape lens and/or mirror. When the tunnel is out of alignment, you will see a shadow and sometimes a rainbow artifact that follows the shadow. Almost every DLP projector made has one of these and they can and do move over the thermal cycling of the projector. I have replaced them before but sometimes they just need an adjustment and hopefully this video clears up the specifics.
As always if you have any questions about it, please post them below.
Thanks again for watching and stay safe and healthy out there. I hope to go back and edit this description once Corvid19 is past us. Take care- Frank

Hi Frank, many thanks!!! Had the shadow growing for months on top and left of the screen and finally got it sorted. Optoma HD 25 - the screws were glued on the thread and in the Philips head and one was inaccessible due to the MB. I stripped down again (got good at that bit) and managed to free off the screws. I finally set it up by holding the assembly, shining an LED torch down the light tunnel while looking through the lens like you would a microscope; I could then see the light as I made the adjustments on the DMD, just as I would on the screen. Maybe not text book, but it worked for me. BTW. excellent videos great to have it explained how and why things work. Having never opened a projector, I've got right into the guts of the thing and out again without additional damage and got the joy of fixing something.....always a good feeling.

Hey Frank, I have a projector that I've fixed the alignment of the light tunnel thanks to your very instructional videos. Thanks for all you do. I have a problem with it though, the the light tunnel will slowly go back out of alignment overtime. In this video you had mentioned that some manufacturers use lock tight or glue to keep the alignment screws from moving. When I did my projector, I noticed that 1 alignment screw had glue, but the other alignment screw that needed adjusting did not have glue (maybe it melted off or was never put on?). What do you recommend for glue as replacement to keep the alignment screws in place?

HI Jacinda, Thanks for letting me know! That's the whole reason I do these videos. I learn as I go, so it seems only right to share what I can. Light tunnel repair was the first repair I ever did on a video projector. The segments collapsed and I glued them back into place. Ideally you want the screws to use some form of Loctite type adhesive but, since it's your own unit, super glue would be just fine for locking the screw. Anything that will take a little heat and not crumble. Epoxy would be fine if it is temperature tolerant. That is the main concern. How long is it taking for the tunnel to slide out of place? Are you talking hours or days? Days might be the screw, but if its hours, your return spring might be the problem. I should have asked, what model do you have? There are two different light tunnel configurations(for the most part). One uses coil springs, the other uses cut/bent spring steel. Here is a video I did on the type that has the normal type of spring. kzbin.info/www/bejne/foa5ZIOGj9R5m8k This HD20 uses the flat spring steel with the tabs cut/bent. kzbin.info/www/bejne/laTQiqF_f7Cdj9U The flat spring steel tends to lose its spring temper. I have had success with bending the tabs a little further than they seem like they should. Then when the tunnel goes back in, the spring pushes back enough to hold things in place.

@@FixitFrank wow you are awesome at responding to comments on your videos. Thanks for the information, I'll look into an appropriate heat tolerant solution. In terms of hours (it runs approx. 10 hours week) it takes about 40 hours to look like the 11:45 mark in your video on the right hand side. It doesn't get much worse than that either I think. It's a BenQ MW727, do you know which type of spring this projector uses? I have a hard time finding specific details like this.

@@kyyousgirl311 You're very welcome! I suspect it is the flat steel type. If you can get me some pictures of the light tunnel, I could tell you for sure.

Hi Frank if you see this could really use your advice’ I have an optoma intelliGO-s1 which is a mini dlp but uses rgb led I’ve got it taken apart to replace dmd… However the optical engine/ heat sink are one unit together and where the 2 screws are for dmd cover it is sealed with like black sealant or glue’ So it’s a fully sealed light engine My question if I cut it replace what do I use to reseal it ?

I have not worked on one of those myself. But I would think some silicone sealant would work. check out automotive black RTV and see what you think of the consistency. That is what I would probably use. I would at least check it out.

Hi Frank - I have an HD142x and have narrowed down one of my problems to the alignment here. By adjusting the screws I almost got it perfect but now it gets no closer and I can’t even get it back to its imperfect state. Any suggestions for completely sorting it? The screws no longer align it properly.

I bet the spring that pushed on the light tunnel needs to be over bent to push the light tunnel back into place.

@@FixitFrank Can confirm! Thank you so much for your videos :) i took it apart and took the lens assembly out to adjust the light tunnel and then managed to fix it!

I also have this nec ve281x . it ran about 1000 hrs. Whenever I run it at least 2 hrs it produces some buzzing noise and shuts down. this sounds like a moving part is rubbing something in it. I have disassembled the projector and checked the color wheel. There were no rubbing marks. I noticed that when I pushed the wheel motor the motor was moving forward & backward but the bearing was ok. I cleaned each & every part of the projector and reassembled it. Now it's working fine but I don't know when the problem will arrive. One last thing that I also have noticed that all of the 4 tiny mirrors in the light tunnel module has got rust on it that's why the projector can't produce brighter light . Can you please give me some suggestions to fix this tunnel.. ??? Love form India.

Hi Rajdeep! Greetings from Pennsylvania! You can use any first surface mirror to cut and make segments. I have also used segments from other brands. Some rust is OK but if it is obscuring most of the mirrored segments that will cause problems. I've found that you can take the mirror from an optical assembly of another projector and use a diamond wheel on a dremmel or even a glass cutting tool to cut out new strips to make a new tunnel. I would look into replacing the light tunnel as soon as you can. It has a sleeve bearing made from from oil bronze that will wear out. I have a contact in China that has good prices on color wheel. GYDZ@Timeprojectorlamps.com If you contact them, send a picture of the old wheel so they can confirm the proper part. I hope this info help and let me know if you get stuck.

Can you acquire image score? Over time, the projector loses image sharpness and cleaning does not help.

It might be a bad DMD. I heard that dust can get inside sometimes. Or heat makes the DMD fail and the mirrors move and are no longer flat and cannot be focused. Are you referring to this model?
