Technically, reverse shift is not synchronized with all the others gears, so it's easier, like in low range. And its a big truck, not a little cars. But for a first time, she's doing great, I mean on a tractor you can release the clutch without any precautions, both girls doing great.

I learned that if your trying to teach someone to drive a manual vehicle it helps alot of people learn way quicker if you can turn the idle up to about 800-1200 rpms depending on the vehicle. It allows them to not worry about having to time the clutch release and accelerator depress perfectly. With most vehicles they can release the clutch before having to worry about hitting the gas. Also trying to teach the clutch release and throttle input timing is alot easier on them once they have already learned to take off from a stop and are comfortable doing it over and over. Right now shes looking at her feet alot because shes hasnt built the muscle memory needed yet. When she was trying to shift initially she was trying to watch the pedals and the shifter while listening to you. Most times its easer to let them stay in first gear and stop and take off again. Once they have that concept grasped the rest comes super easy

It’s ok Danielle. I learned how to drive manual and learned how to drive in a 2001 f350 dually. A tip for if you’re ever driving one of the stick shift fords: you can put the truck in low gear, which is all the way to the left and down, and slowly let the clutch out while on the brakes. Go as slow as you physically can. You’ll feel the clutch grab because the truck will just barely start to move. Do that a few times and that will teach you where the clutch engages. When you figure that out, try pressing on the throttle until you’re at about 1/4 throttle as the clutch engages. Low gear will lurch if you do that, but first gear will be smoother. Your launches will be jerky until you figure out the clutch engagement point and can smoothly increase the throttle through that point. Another tip: sit closer to the pedals than you think. Sit close enough at first to where you can push the clutch in without bending your foot. Use just your quads and thighs. They’re much more controlled until you learn the engagement point and how to control it. At that point, use your feet because you can feather the clutch more. My biggest tip: let that clutch out as slow as you possibly can. Let it out too slow. It’ll slip at first, but you can go extremely slow. Those clutches are designed to back up trailers and designed to slip a little at low speeds. Plus you’re dating a diesel mechanic and he can replace the clutch. Also drill this into your brain: when in doubt, slam the clutch in. If you need to brake quickly, slam the clutch in. Once you get experience, you will learn to use the clutch to slow you down, but as a beginner it’ll only hurt you and some people panic and can’t slow down.

Also, I found that going out in a field with no one in the truck with me was so much easier to learn. There’s no one to stress you out, there’s no one to laugh. Just you and yourself and nothing but time to figure out that engagement point and throttle transition. I found the hardest part about learning to drive manual was having to think about others reacting to how bad my launches were and telling me what to do, to the point where I couldn’t focus. It’ll all click once you get that engagement point figured out and it’ll be so easy to drive. Those stick shift 7.3s are the easiest manuals to learn on.

Last tip: learn how to drive with one palm. Learn how to wax on and wax off. Also JH lied when he said you can’t launch in 2nd. You absolutely can and it’s often easier because you don’t have to immediately shift

I learned to drive a manual in a 72 VW Bug when I was 12 back in the late 70's. I drove that thing all over the backroads of E.Tx. Times were a lot different back then. Danielle just keep practicing and you'll start having a lot of fun the more you get your timing & coordination perfected. I had a manual 4runner, one day we were stopped at the lights and my girlfriend at the time said "I wouldn't mind driving a manual, you just have to shift the gears". It blew her mind when I said there was a 3rd pedal...She actually picked it up pretty quickly in the movie theatre parking lot. You should have focussed on finding the grabbing point of the clutch and how to control it, and rowing through the gears with the truck off.

Danielle to be fair that truck is harder then a car to get into gear and get going. BUT it is a great learning vehicle. When you can drive it on the road, not stall, smooth shifts, then you can get into a car with a stick and it will be way easy compared to that truck. First learn in that truck it will make you a good manual driver. Good Job JH great entertainment. She will get better takes some time. Seems like a nice young lady, dresses nice and respectable, no need for makeup, she is a good sport, did not get mad at all or quit. Level head on her.

One thing though, when she can shift that truck properly in traffic as hard as it is to get into gear and as slow as it is to shift, when she does get into a car with a better shifting trans, she will be fine. That POS is a great vehicle to learn a manual in. When your good in that POS you can shift any manual.

@@opossom1968 Not true. A big diesel like that should be way easier than a car. I'm actually surprised how easily they consistently managed to stall a torque monster like that out. Big engine trucks with a lot of rotating mass are so much more forgiving. She said she was struggling to do everything at once. If that was a 4cyl car, the gas & clutch require way more coordination. 10yrs ago I drove a 4.3l GMC 2500 everyday for work, often with a double axle enclosed trailer, & was smooth as butter rev matching without clutching etc. Then one day I drove a coworkers 4banger miata like thing & I was not ready for the amount of throttle it took or how the clutch would go from unengaged to full grab with like a millimeter of travel in the 6 inches of travel it had. Was a bit like that video of Cleetus taking his manual Supra with radials to the sticky drag strip.

And I think Danielle was hitting third instead of first, or fourth instead of second, most of the time. Once she gets the gate pattern she'll be good.
