honestly i like the idea of having 3 different yamato movesets rather than giving vergil multiple devil arms outright in dmc we always see vergil using the yamato only most of the time with exceptions like in dmc3 where he will switch between beowulf and yamato in the second fight, and same with force edge and yamato, but in dmc5 its all yamato however when you play as vergil by the rules of stylishness and for each situation you will use a bunch of weapons, specially in dmc3 where the yamato was more of a weapon you used in short bursts rather than a main one i think it would be neat if vergil was playable in dmc6 with a mainline-ified version of angel, neutral and demon modes (could name it after sword stances but im not knowledgeable on that topic) and have this also apply to beowulf (like say, a stance where beowulf behaves as it does in dmc1 and another where it works like dmc3 vergil's with rising star and the chargeless combos as a neat callback) though yamato demon mode here is actually closer to dmc1 ifrit which is pretty cool actually like the potential this moveset idea had was pretty cool but not done very well here since this DLC was rushed but would be interesting if a new dmc game revisited ideas, we already have DMC4/5SE giving vergil slow samurai cuts with the yamato while in DT, what if that was a style for the yamato focused on slow cuts, and then a neutral style thats just the usual vergil, and a style with things like the yamato stinger and roundtrip as a force edge replacement

I surprisingly liked the slower moveset this Vergil has. Like this Vergil lacks the finesse of the original and instead resorts to pure brutal force with primodorial swordplay. Very fitting given his character in the reboot.

As much as people like to crap on this game for its bad voice acting & ludicrous story, you gotta admit that the game had some good ideas. The Angel & Demon mode mechanic was interesting & some of the level design was made with that mechanic in mind. The whole of DmC’s underworld being within Limbo is also interesting, kinda reminds me of how in Bayonetta you can only see Angels & Demon within Purgatorio. Hell, some of Reboot Vergil’s moves were given to main timeline, aka the original version of Vergil. & when it comes to Devil May Cry as a whole, you can never go wrong with a fight between Vergil & Dante.

Less "ported" and more of a slightly based on type of thing. The fight in 5 was heavily based on DMC3's 1st and last Vergil fight in DMD. On top of a towering structure, Vergil only using Yamato and his DT(SDT in 5), Vergil spamming Helm Breaker and JC etc. The only stuff that's taken from DmC:Devil May Cry's Vergil vs Dante is the moves, but those moves are also taken from other characters in DMC4, with Doppleganger, Divorce, Flare and Rising Star are the only original moves presented.

​​@@jedy5658Actually no. Here's a really weird surprise. DMC4 Special Edition came out after DmC Special Edition. And Vergil in DmC actually contributed a lot in expanding main timeline Vergil's moveset. The yamato became a lot more fast and versatile in DMC4 thanks to DmC, most of the new yamato moves originate from DmC. The doppelganger is another example. DmC Vergil is a lot more influential in shaping how modern Vergil plays than people realise. (mainly because many don't realise DmC's DLC predates 4 Special Edition). Also apparently the director of mainline DMC likes DmC a lot surprisingly. Nero in DMC5 is heavily inspired by Donte, tho that one's a lot more well known. One other thing main Vergil should get would be the ability to teleport enemies to him using summon swords. That shit was another really cool concept in DmC.

The windup and follow through of most of his attacks in DmC are pretty much non-existent, which makes things like the sheathing look "robotic" as OP has put it. Some of his attacks actually look pretty neat, like divorce, killer bee, or orbit, but the principles of animation have been known for a century now, there is no excuse for having a vast majority of his moveset look so stilted.

Dmc4SE vergil looks much better. This was a rushed free DLC job, you can't expect too much. That said I think it is pretty cool how you can see a good amount of DMC4 and 5 vergil in here, perfect timed moves are rewarded, doppelganger from DMC5 started here, Rising Star came from this game. It's a neat piece of legacy and Vergil still plays okay in this game.

This stems from the fact that he was powerless as he was a child when he was defending his family when the demons attacked their home. He fought with his Demon Father at that time, and he was closer to him. While their mom hid Dante in a closet, as he was closer to his Priestess Mother. This also served as a narrative poetry, as Dante embraced his humanity and made him stronger to protect people. As Vergil chased his Demonic side further to make him stronger to protect people but lost due to an err in his ways. This is a common in japanese tropes, like Naruto, Bleach, early DBZ etc. also known as the Red and Blue Oni. The monologue he did at the top of the Qlipoth was "If our positions were switched, were our lives be different? Will you have my life, and you mine?" He meant this literally being trapped in the closet instead of Dante's, and Dante defending their home instead. He got twisted at this point, seeing humans as weakness and denounced that side, seeking power (which became a meme.) all the while Dante even worked with Humans to protect them.

The Vergil we have now owes a lot to this game. Many moves from DMC4SE and DMC5 Vergil used DmC Vergil as a basis. Cross Cut being Yamato Combo A, Rising Star, Rapid Slash, Aerial Rave, all came from here. Core mechanics that Vergil would have came from here too. Summoned Sword tricking to enemies, just frame Judgement Cuts, even Doppelganger being the highlights. Though considering that Itsuno was a supervisor for this game, maybe he was like, "yo try the mechanics here first to test out and my team will try and implement these for our game."

So, as someone who played all the other DMC games, especially 5, I felt like vergil was incredibly slow. They did so well with dante's moveset in this game, but Vergil feels limited and clunk 😢

for anyone considering playing this dlc don’t. i actually really like the main campaign in DmC but in this dlc there are two bosses (both are awful), and all missions feel the exact same, unlike the campaign which was super creative. vergil’s moveset is pretty okay tho, but nowhere near as good as that of dante

Vergil's Downfall has more content that whatever SE you have ever played. DMC 4 and 5 SE are literally the same game with another character and some cutscenes. Vergil's Downfall is something Capcom has never done: An exclusive adventure for Vergil. You will never see a separate campaign for Vergil in DMC franchise.
