The GPS functionality works through satellites and you don’t need any connection for that. If you want to search for destinations, then you do need internet. So, depends on how you intend to use the device. I “steal” internet from my phone whenever I need it. And if I’m going somewhere I know I won’t have any coverage, I just plan ahead and make sure I got destinations on POI or a track to follow.
