Good report TS. Since I don't have a current Garmin unit this makes the decision to get DMD2 much easier. I like and appreciate the convenience of electronics. Could intercom be run thru this unit? One less device on the bars. You aren't a fool. We all learn as we can. It's the change we have trouble accepting. Confidence, knowledge, training all help this situation. Robert has done a great job in the training segment. Everybody listens to a man who wheels a sword like Zorro. All good. Get those rides in while you can. Next time.

Unless you are a hardcore road rider, there is no point considering a Garmin unit. I really did not think to much about having the different options so available. I had the phone in my pocket, but every time you stop, you need to take it out, do a search etc. It just takes to much time and effort after a long day. Much better to have it easy accessible on the dash. Well, I might not be a fool, but I feel like it when I know that I have convinced others to jump on the Zumo train and it feels a little bit bad. But like you say, we learn, we become better and the worlds spins every minute. Yeah, Robert has done a great job with showing how capable this devices are and how well it all works together with software etc. Next time mate, stay safe ☕️

Very impressive overview of the DMD2 suite of solutions! And top notch video quality. Welcome to the party, you are not too late and perhaps your perspective is enhanced after the many app/hardware improvements which have been put in place before you arrived. It's the remote that drew me in a few years ago and I still can't believe Garmin hasn't figured out how important this is for bikers. You didn't spend much time covering what DMD2 combined with a remote can do, but it's a game changer for ease of app use while riding. Cheers!

Thank you sir, and highly appreciated. Always nice when people are impressed by my creative outlet trough videos 🙌🏻 Well, I do think, after so many years with Garmin, I know exactly what I want and need in a navigational system. So it is easy to be impressed when everything just works. But on the other side, it is really easy to be disappointed when stuff does not work as planed. I did not spend too much time on the controller in this video, because you really don't need it for the system to work perfectly. Yes, it is an insanely useful addition to it all, and one of my key selling point for this. But I need to cover more of that in a stand alone video for the ones who have interest for it. I don't want to come off like you NEED to have the controller for all this to work. (if that make sense) I will also make a video where I try out roadbook for the first time and how well every thing works regarding that. I hope that more beginners find the joy in trying new stuff with their bikes in the future.

It looks like a nice alternative. Where I live in interior Alaska I need the satellite communication with the Inreach system, and the piece of mind having the SOS button on my Garmin Montana 700i. As there are many locations here without cellular service, and in this region the Inreach has better service than other satellite communication companies. So it can really depend on where one is traveling, on what system is preferred. I do wish there were more alternatives, so this is nice to see someone developing competition for Garmin. Thanks for the installation video, and I look forward to further reports on how it works for you.
@tshansen6 күн бұрын
This is a really god topic that is not addressed enough. With the new satellite communication with iPhone now, I'm not sure how that holds up against in reach? I know for a fact how well inreach works so that is a system you can rely on. I would would rather get a mini hanging on my body, than have it on the sat nav on the bike, but it is still an extra cost that you need to take into consideration. Damn, this is actually a topic I should consider doing a video about 🤔
@williamb.69185 күн бұрын
@@tshansen Personally I have activated the iPhone SOS more than once when it was in my pocket using both button call method options. In both cases the phone was hot and angry so I was neither able to stop the SOS or even shutdown/reboot the phone. That was enough for me. I will not be using it again until I have very high confidence it cannot readily trigger a false alarm while just in my pocket on a ride. Regarding the 700i, the downside is that device is on your bike, if you get separated from your bike for some reason you may not be able to activate it. I always carry my mini on my person and somewhere I can actually reach it in case I get pinned under the bike (which has happened) or separated from the bike.

Evening Thomas, I think the wire connectors are called, Solder seal wire connectors. 👍 Garmin are so behind the times now, the processors they use in the units are very slow, where as all these new alternatives seem to work so much better. The DMD2 looks brilliant and the remote is a big bonus too. You could basically remove the Yamaha instrumentation, and just have the DMD2, although I guess you don’t get the mileage reading and the fuel and temperature gauges.

Solder is the right word, I thought it was to close to soldier 😂 thank you for adding this info Solder seal wire connectors... need to write that down. They are absolutely fantastic. Garmin is not even playing in the same field anymore. From what I can tell they have all their focus on watches. But what irritates me the most is how incredible slow and painful the syncing between the explorer app and the tread app is now. after the latest updates. It has rendered the unit useless for my needs. Maybe there is a way to set up the ODO to fit, I have not put to much attention to that yet, but a lot of it you could replace yes.

I use Locus Maps since a few years for 4x4 offroad tours. Now I bought a CRF 300 R and so I found DMD2 on KZbin. It´s the first NavSys other than LocusMaps that I´m interested in. Since 2 month I test it here and there with my old S20+ on the CRF. It has the potential to be my first choice for navigation for 4x4 and motorbike, I think I just need a little more time on, sry, off the road. What I miss is the adjustable automatic zoom depending on the driving speed. And the nature of the tracks often does not match the DMD2 map, at least in my area in northern Germany. But that's probably not due to DMD2 but rather the database. Tack för dina videos!

Had a look at going DMD2-T865X cost in Australia $1410, only available to order from overseas stock. Samsung tab active 3, 4, or 5 range from $600 to $1100 Australian dollars. Then, the $32 annual subscription. Then a mount $...... The level of detail is better than Google Maps, naming very minor roads and tracks that Google doesn't. The Garmin Zumo XT2 also has great details, also names minor tracks but only costs $800 with free map updates, comes with everything I need out of the box, and in my opinion is the perfect size for my bike. 10 inches or even 8 inches plus a large bezel is too big imo. Update 16sep2024. The more you look at what you get and a all in one solution with support from the one place, the more it makes sense. The DMD 865X unfortunately isn't available in Australia atm.
@tshansen5 күн бұрын
Yeah, it is an investment and there are many ways to go about this, but I thin you really need to identify what your needs are, how much you use the sat nav, how you want to use it and if you ride more than just roads. The XT2 is not a bad unit, but it is overpriced as hell for what you get, and it is only good at one thing. Now I can't even transfer my tracks to the unit I want to follow.
@Kurt0132 күн бұрын
With DMD devices, you have everything unlocked, lifetime. Also, all the system/Android updates, firmware, etc, is made by the developer. And the level of support you get by them, is something extraordinary! Sure, the tablet it's not cheap but you aren't buying just a tablet. 😉

Well, the difference is much easier for a tech guy to answer, but I understand that it is to separate tablets with different specs that run's the same software? With that said, I have heard a lot of stories with the Carpe Iter tablets. They don't hold charge, not waterproof etc etc.

How is the brightness in sunlight on The DMD-865x Nav Tablet. And how safe are the charging contacts on the back itself regarding shaking and rain at the same time. It is known that the Tenere 700's bird stick has a tendency to shake alot without an e.g. "Camel's vibration brace"
@tshansen5 күн бұрын
The brightness in sunlight is the best one I got so far. It is even better than the xt2 but it is really hard to capture on video because of the lense on the camera and the screen. It just does not come out the way you see it when you stir at the screen. The charging contact you need to screw into the unit, so that is safe and water proof. The pin connectors in the bottom is also really safe when riding and dust and rain hit. How well it is if you ride without the tablet, or you take it off to use in the tent, and it rains and freeze I have not testet yet. But hope to do that later this season. Yes, the world raid does not fit the Camel Vibrations Brace, but I have my own design I 3D printed and works really well, but not good enough with the stick straight out towards you

every time I watch one of these videos I have to STRONGLY remind myself that I'm an asphalt rat and for me, my old Garmin 396 is good enough. I would get the phone though, the only problem is the actual hardware is a bit outdate for an android phone.
@tshansen6 күн бұрын
Hahaha, that is a good point, Garmin does Nuvi maps and road calculation really well. So if this is your only need, most Garmin devices can handle it with ease. Put it is ment to be a phone? Is it not just a phone size tablet? To do navi stuff, not all the other crap we normally put a phone trough?
@ioandragulescu60636 күн бұрын
@@tshansen that's the thing, I would get the T665, the 865 tablet size is too big for me. And I would use the T665 as a daily phone also, 2 in 1 :). But it has the same hardware inside as my 4 year old cheap Motorola phone .... so that is a bit of a letdown. I guess I could just use it as a navigator, get a data sim card and all but then I'll miss the ability to answer phone calls via the cardo headset .... On the other hand they are about to upgrade to Android 14 which is a plus. Maybe I'll wait until Top Icon release a new version. That's what I found out btw, the DMD tablets/phones are made by TopIcon in hong kong :)

How is it for connecting to satellites. I have the Tripletsk 9 pro with DMD2 and it has a really hard time connecting even in open areas. My Garmin usually never fails in that respect.
@tshansen6 күн бұрын
That is a good question. I find it to connect faster to satellites here in Norway than the XT2. you see that every time I start my bike and run out of the garage. The unit finds connection when I turn on the ignition, the xt2 is not connected before I'm down on the main road. But that could be a software thing. Same you see it when going into or trough tunnels. But how it connect, and how many connections etc you got I have no idea. Maybe a tech guy can give a better answer to this than I can.

As to my knowledge (limited) there is no way it will read the level of fuel. But you set how much on average you get out of one filling, and then I counts down with your trip meter. So it is much the same as having a trip meter read and get a warning when the yellow light comes on.

In fact, Tomtom still has the best satellite navigation on the market, which is updated quarterly, unlike Garmin. Since I hardly ever drive off-road, I can't say how accurate Tomtom maps are off-road, but the mobile app works just as well as satellite navigation, although of course it's not free.
