Dmitri Hvorostovsky - Ombra mai fù from Xerxes (CSOTW, 16th June 1989)

Dmitri Hvorostovsky (1962-2017) performing "Ombra mai fù" from Handel's opera Xerxes during the 5th preliminary round of the 1989 BBC Cardiff Singer Of The World competition.
The phenomenal showdown with contemporary Bryn Terfel during the Main Prize final soon became known as the 'Battle of the Baritones' and, until this day, marks one of the highlights of the competition's history.
The Russian baritone took the Main Prize that year. He was one of the world’s most extraordinary operatic singers, with a great appreciation for the works of Verdi and Tchaikovsky in particular. He embodied a great variety of characters, including Onegin, Yeletsky, Germont, Don Giovanni, Rigoletto, Count di Luna and many more, at the most renowned opera houses worldwide. He was equally a sought after recitalist, with his repertoire covering a great variety of composers, from Russia and beyond.
In 2019, the Cardiff Singer Audience Prize was dedicated to his memory.

Oh that first note! I remember thinking the first time I heard this that he had made a mistake starting so loud. Thinking he had left himself nowhere to go with the crescendo. Oh boy was I wrong. I still haven’t heard anyone sing the crescendo like he sang it. Xx❤

On notera la séquence de présentation du candidat (ça existe toujours). Il s'y exprime en russe, parce qu'il connaissait à peine l'anglais (c'est lui qui l'a dit plus tard). Quelques années plus tard, on pourra l'entendre s'exprimer dans un anglais parfait, sans chercher ses mots... Pour en revenir à cette interprétation, le début est en effet saisissant. Cette longue note est d'une grande beauté.

Il ne connassait que quelques mots a’ peine d anglais avant Cardiff. J ai travaille’ avec lui à son premier opera en Europe, Onegin - il l’ apprenait alors grâce à Philips qui Lui avait signé son premier contrat mais il en était à ses balbutìements. Tout en ayant la voix et le charisme qui l’ ont très vite emmené aux USA.
