He was up against Brynn Tyrfel that year. Brynn won the lied prize. I don’t think they knew what to do, Dmitri was obviously the better lied singer, and Brynn could do things that Dmitri couldn’t at this point like Wagner. But Dmitri was clearly on these performances the better overall singer. I don’t think they’ve ever had two truly world class talents compete against each other again. By all accounts they both rated the hell out of each other. An absolute embarrassment of riches that year.

Oh that first note! I remember thinking the first time I heard this that he had made a mistake starting so loud. Thinking he had left himself nowhere to go with the crescendo. Oh boy was I wrong. I still haven’t heard anyone sing the crescendo like he sang it. Xx❤
