while at the Berklee College of Music in Boston I was very fortunate to study orchestral writing in one on one private lessons under Yabov Gubanov, the last student of Shostakovich. Gubanov is the greatest composer I have ever met, and he is a spectacular pianist to boot. he could simply hear my scores in his head, when I offered to play a CD of my computer playing my violin sonata he said "no need. I hear it." while turning the pages quickly. I asked him what it was like to study with Shostakovich, and he said "I felt like an asteroid that passes Jupiter. you want to turn your head to admire the greatness, but if you get too close you will be pulled in and destroyed!"
@Eorzat7 жыл бұрын
Wow. Every time I hear someone who gives such a deep response like that, I just think how much they've thought about that question. He must've reflected quite a bit on his time spent with Shostakovich if he could just respond like that.
@brianbernstein38267 жыл бұрын
he also teaches a course at the school on Shostakovich's life and the evolution of his compositions. as a young child, Gubanov tracked down his house because he desperately wanted to study under him, and knocked on his door, and I think the maid said to go away or something, so he stuffed his scores under the door. He kept coming back and stuffing more and more pages under the door until finally the master agreed to meet with him. he said the snow-filled front yard was littered with vodka bottles. the guy smoked cigarettes from dawn till dusk and was in Stalin's "top 5 most wanted dead" list. that's a whole other meaning of fave 5 right there.

I just don't know where on earth exists music more wonderful than this. So humane, so sincere, so healthy-and I don't mean to suggest at all that I find it sentimental. I just can't think of a stretch of music that is so inspired. With so many different colors and moods, ever-shifting, gleaming at different angles. I love the way he plays off lower and upper registers against each other; I love the contrasting character of the movements; I love the way the very opening material, from the opening movement, ducks in again for a quick visit, the page before the ending of the entire quintet; I love the way the tune of the fugue is built out of the same material. And there's some quality to the opening movement, so hard to define, so hard to find elsewhere in music, something so gloriously matter-of-fact, so full of self-esteem without trace of boasting, so...well, I don't know what to say...so beautifully human. This quintet got me through some tough times in my youth, forty years ago; and now I can see why it did. I recommend this music to all listeners and hope you'll send me a note, saying what you think. Hi ! Thanks for this comment ! I'm 16 years old, and since two years, I have a lot of interest in all kind of music - (for the moment, my favorite artist from far is Peter Hammill - sadly, he is not as known as he deserves to be. I recommand him., for exemple "A Louse Is Not A Home" is wonderful) - I just discovered the String Quartet 8 of Dmitri Shostakovich yesterday, and the II and III movements amazed me a lot ! I try to explore more of Shostakovich ! (Sorry for my bad English) Greetings from France !

@BrucknerMotet4 жыл бұрын
Very astute observation. As I am sure that when the universe sprung into existence, there was not some sort of popularity contest going on where whoever or whatever created the universe decided to do so or not do so or do so in a certain way because it was the popular thing to do. Everything that ever existed and will ever exist in this universe is in fact made possible by totally ignoring popularity as a criteria for decision or choice.

@@ramonbril string quartets baby! It's almost as if the small ensemble composition, and piano is as small as it gets, is a wonderful Workshop for creating Musical masterpieces. And as most of us were most impressed and most moved by a single person or a small group of people who expressed their appreciation or love for us in a very touching moment of cherished personal memory, the solo or small ensemble works of musical magnificence bring with them that level of intimacy that you are used to and are most receptive to, and symphonies are like gazing into a night sky and tripping out on the amazingness of the stars and the planets. Not so intimate and not so touching and memorable as those smaller gestures.

@@BrucknerMotet I was listening to the the Heitor Villa Lobos string quartets at the same time as the Shostakovich, and it seems like the Shostakovich was more daring, and also that the Shostakovich ones held together more as concise, complete extended work. Yet certainly the Villa Lobos was fresh and often rhythmically exciting: Modern, but never goulish or exaggerated, or fragmented, as some other of his contemporaries.

Please watch this at the lowest quality only (144p) since it's just for the music, which is much more ecologically responsible than at a higher rate. Watching this at 240p (which is unnecessary for listening purposes), will increase the bandwith by double to almost tenfold! At 1080 the bandwith is augmented by a factor of 100! The use of digital technology accounts for 4% of the world's greenhouse gas emissions, as much as the emissions from the world's truck fleet. Of that, a BIG part comes from livestreaming videos, mainly 3 sources : KZbin, Netlfix and porn. Let's enjoy this beautiful music by being aware and responsible, doing our little part in decreasing our carbon footprint and protecting this wonderful planet for the generations to come.
@goclbert3 жыл бұрын
The way KZbin works the audio quality is actually lower at the lowest bit rate. You need to listen at 480. Also if someone wants to follow along with the sheet (why I am here), 144 strains the eyes. I'd recommend listening to this on an audio streaming platform or downloading the recording if all you want to do is listen to the music.
