Yes, Smirnov was an absolutely superb tenor; no doubt about it!

absolutely magnificent, sung with utmost dolcezza and no shouting. even more than 100 years after date of recording, this beautiful interpretation beats modern renditions by, e.g., Florez.

@opera1232010 Merci, mon ami. Oui, vous avez raison. Il chante très bien, et il est vrai que l'enregistrement est en très bon état pour son âge.

@SuperLuckydream Thank you, my friend. Yes, one could take the recordings of Smirnov, Sobinov and Lemeshev, and pretty much write the history of tenor singing in Russia and the Soviet Union!

The dimuendi, a lost art, are especially notable in tandem with elasticity heard in the notes in alt.

@stevevandien I'm sorry to say I can't find a date. The recording from which I took it didn't give dates on the performances, and my usual discographies failed me on this one. I'm still looking. I've written to a friend in Russia. If I can find it, I will certainly let you know. Also, if anybody out there has it, I would, needless to say, be grateful if you could let me know.
