Magnificent cricket! So many of my favourite players: a long list!

My fifth birthday, which i spent in the sunshine at Southport Fair. Meanwhile over in Manchester, Close & Edrich were soaking up some of the most fearsome lick ever thrown down over 22 yards.

At his destructive best, and particularly with his trademark ferocious square cut, Gordon Greenidge was in Viv Richards' class as a WIndies batsman. A nice guy too, in my experience. As a school boy in the late 1970s and a cricket watching fanatic, I can remember two occasions when I got his autograph. He couldn't have been more helpful in signing. You remember things like that!

It's a long time since I have watched the footage of Michael Holding, Andy Roberts & Wayne Daniel steaming in at the veteran England openers, Brian Close and John Edrich. There is no doubt that the short pitched bowling was over done and that the umpires were right to intervene. This could-perhaps should-have happened earlier. Equally, there is no doubt that Close (age 45) and Edrich (age 39), though brave, were past their best and should never have been given the job of opening against this WIndies pace attack. Neither played test cricket again after this match.

Yet Edrich scored 76 not out in his previous test against the same opponents. in the excellent book Grovel about this series David Tossel the author suggested Edrich had lost his nerve somewhat, a bit harsh maybe

Holding did bowl a lot of shortish balls in this spell but the problem was eccasapated by the fact that the ball was lifting viscously off what wasn't that short of a length and at Mikey's pace that would be quite an ordeal for anyone let alone a man of around 45 in an era without helmets and very little or no body protection. Closey was made of tough stuff for sure.

@@markhiggins8315 he was! Edrich too!

@@johncourtneidge Yes John was certainly not short of guts. The reason I mentioned Close was that it was he who spent virtually if not all this particular session at the end facing Holding who was getting lift off not far short of a length at a pace that was close to as fast as a ball has ever been delivered but it was no picnic at the other end either.
