For those saying "Why the hell are people singing along ruining it" type comments. I was there. This was an EXTREMELY rare chance to see Martin perform solo. I was singing just as loud as the rest. It was an amazing night. This was a small show, which is why the audience comes through so loud. 1500 people is a small venue, so it's kind of hard ignoring the audience singing... :D

This was the original arrangement he wanted for the song, too. But engineer/producer for the Violator album, Flood (well known producer; it's a pseudonym) convinced him to give the song like a kind of disco or up-tempo beat, and Martin eventually relented when everyone else loved that version (but he didn't, and probably still isn't a big fan of the album version to this day; who knows). I prefer the album version -- plus I think the video Anton Corbijn did for the song is probably the best music video of all time. I love the over-saturation of colors and the added red, green or blue hue, depending on the shot; makes it look like a story book or something. Very, very well done video.

I have always been wondering if Enjoy The Silence would have become such a hit had Martin his way and kept it a ballad. I do not think so. The genius of Alan Wilder decided to make it an uptempo song. And the rest is history.
@fastica4 жыл бұрын
It was Flood’s decision to make it uptempo.
@HJPhilippi3 жыл бұрын
Exactly. And there are still people out there claiming that Alan Wilder would have been rather unimportant... They don't have a clue in my opinion.
@miguelmirandabouchan123 жыл бұрын
Not true, it was Alan idea even in an interview Flood tell that.
@helisure22863 жыл бұрын
When you watch Alan or Flood being interviewed about ETS, they say that they heard its potential to rhythmically sounds like PTS songs. It’s interesting how they explain the layering of the sounds till the Martin’s famous riff comes to perfect the song. Without Martin’s decision to change from synth to guitar, I doubt that ETS would have become such a iconic song. I found that simplifying the working process is a pity.

@paulbedington2923 Жыл бұрын
As I understand the genesis of the official DM version of Enjoy the Silence, Martin had written it as a simple ballad and initially resisted Alan Wilder and Daniel Miller suggesting putting a beat to it. Watch Flood's videos about this. In the midst of the engineering, Martin comes up with the melody very quickly, again pushed to play it on the guitar (instead of the synth) and it pulls it all together brilliantly. Having said this, I always wanted to hear what Martin originally wanted and this has to be it. Just imagine, this is a video of the ONLY TIME he played it! Martin L. Gore is a world class extraordinary musician, visionary composer and also a giving and collaborative band member. A class act!

What a special night! I feel so fortunate to have been there! It was a gorgeous show, part DM part underground midnight show vibe. Hearing MLG perform this along with "Coming Back to You" were highlights of being a fan for 20 years by that point! The fact that they are STILL making music and playing shows TWENTY YEAR after Martin's show at the Mayan is a testament to the staying power of their artistry. If you are bummed about the sing-along, you can hear MLG sing this on his own with a simple harmonium on the UK 12" and US CD single releases. (Or just search for "Enjoy the Silence" "Harmonium" on KZbin and you will locate it.)

Martin IS Mixed a fact he has not denied since he found out, although it is a subject he does not like to talk about, in all the books I've read about Depeche Mode, it is always mentioned, anyway look at his hair, that's a big giveaway, don't actually know any white person with hair as coarse and thick as Martin's I'm mixed and his hairs thicker than mine!

Audiences must realize when a show, act or song is not the type or effective if the audience sings along or woos throughout. Unless the show information specifically states "sing a long". The same with bright phones for filming/photographing, but that is just a modern day disease in live shows. You paid, so listen and watch the act, but most of all respect.

@nycdre Seems you've never heard a concert in your life. Every concert is screaming, singing and clapping. And BTW, the music at the concerts is so hard you don't actually even hear them so much as you do here. It's just the recording that makes it, don't know why, so hard.

Martin singing this song is great although I thought he was going to deep throat the mic for a sec there. The piano does suck... and the tempo is really slow. He looks like the albino Robert Smith but I did love it but he is high as a kite on this one.

Enjoy the silence is one of my all time favourite songs, but this performance just sounds sluggish, uncomfortable and out of tune to me - 2:46 is a fair example of what I'm talking about. I'm glad some people do appreciate it though.

I agree Martin is a great artist...but...I would not dare say that without him Dave would be unable to perform songs correctly...Dave is also an amazing singer...and it is him who makes show...there would not be DM without even one of them... keep moding...

I used to pronounce his name like that (gone), and people would always correct me. It makes more sense that it is pronounce "gone" in English, but in different languages, it would more than likely be pronounced the way it is spelled (ga-haan).
