Funnily enough, I'm just about to go from 35mm Turbine stem to 35mm Defy+ stem, the exact 2 stems you have in this video. I also want more rise, and this is a lot better than the stated 5mm rise. Cheers for uploading, excellent video, this is what KZbin is all about. Have a cracking day mate!

Stumbled on this as I have just ordered one, and wondered on the quality. So thanks for the video. You made this more complex than it needed to be. You are confusing two separate things. Rise and stack. You are gaining 5mm rise as DMR claim, and you are benefiting from 13mm less stack (so more spacers underneath) than a typical mtb stem. Rise is usually measured as an angle vs horizontal. Most mtb stems have a 5 degree rise, which on a 50mm stem equates to 5mm, on a 35mm stem equates to 4mm. The race face has zero rise so is 0mm. Almost any other stem would have netted you the same 4 or 5mm rise. Very few would get you the 13mm additional spacers due to a lower stack, which is where the real benefit has come from.

Thanks for this video and clarifying the difference. I've bought an orbea rise in XL (I'm 6ft 4). If you put my dropper post to the height I need it, the bars are so much lower that the seat height it's unreal. I've just purchased today some one-up carbon e-bar with a 35mm rise. I was searching for a stem, found this one on Google and looked for a video, yours popped up first. This combined with the one-up bars will be perfect. As it is, I look like I'm on a road Racer being that low down at the front 🤣

feel your pain... Im "only" 6'3" (190.5cm) but more legs than average for my hight and always end up with the saddle way up high like a pro road race bike.... not a good feel on a trail or enduro bike. Luckily meet a guy on a Capra XXL and noticed that they hack the steerer short, that would have been a pricey "fix"

Cheers for the video. Do you know what the maximum rider weight is for this stem? Steerer clamp area looks approximately 1/3 less surface area. I have the same issues with being a taller rider. It would be great if manufacturers left uncut steerers on there bikes for the riders to decide the stack height. I went from a 25mm riser bar to 40mm, stills feels a tad low. cheers.

Hi there. Sorry for the late response, but I have been on the mountain in Les Gets and Morzine today. 😎 The stem is bomb proof. I'm over 100kgs on the bike and I'm not a very delicate rider. I've thrashed down drops and overshot jumps to flat and the stem is rock solid. Cheers.

But what if you put the defy stem down where the raceface stem sits? Then is it 5mm?
@d2cdl
@d2cdl 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, but the beauty of the Defy stem is its low stack height, meaning the bars sit much higher than the top of the steerer when the stem is also at the top of the steerer. Relative to the top of the steerer tube, the Defy stem raises the bars 20mm more than the RF one.
@runejensen6145
@runejensen6145 Жыл бұрын
Is this really 15mm rise? The product description says 5mm.
@d2cdl
@d2cdl Жыл бұрын
Technically yes, the bars are only 5mm higher than the bottom of the stem. However, the low stack height of the stem means it can have more spacers under it, effectively lifting the bars/stem relative to the top of the steerer tube👍
@runejensen6145
@runejensen6145 Жыл бұрын
@@d2cdl thanks - just to be verbose, your 15mm is then in reality the measure from the top of the stem to the top of the bar?
@d2cdl
@d2cdl Жыл бұрын
@Rune Jensen I can't remember the exact details/maths on it, only that the Defy stem allows the bars to sit much higher than the top of the steerer than any other stem out there. I guess the maths would be, 35mm bar+5mm rise,-stack height= the height the top of the bars are above the top of the steerer🤯

@@d2cdl I was specifically wondering if this provides more rise than the Funn Equalizer Stem (10mm). Measuring over design charts for both it does seem like this provides a bit more when measured from the top of the stem, probably 5mm.
@d2cdl
@d2cdl Жыл бұрын
@Rune Jensen The Funn stem allows the top of the bars to sit 11mm above the top of the steerer, and Defy stem allows 13mm 👍

You did not calculat well the heigt. You need to mesure them after the two botom of the stems are at the same heigt
@jorelpablo6864
@jorelpablo6864 4 жыл бұрын
the stack height of the stem relative to the top position in the steerer tube is what he's measuring. He would not have got the advantage of the shorter stack height of the defy if he did measure it with the bottom at the same height.
@jahtakka
@jahtakka 4 жыл бұрын
The fact is that it is correct to measure the rise from the lower plane of the stem. You've turned everything upside down. Other things being equal, with such an installation, the steering wheel will be closer, the cockpit will decrease. That's why you need to measure from the bottom plane.
@d2cdl
@d2cdl 4 жыл бұрын
Hi there. Sorry, but I have to disagree. I cannot mount any stem higher than the top of my steerer tube, hence why my measuring point is from the top of the stem.
@200Duece
@200Duece 5 жыл бұрын
It's not the rise that gives you the extra height. It's the difference of stack height that you have illustrated with the 5mm rise the DMR stem. The DMR stem had a much smaller stack height.
@d2cdl
@d2cdl 5 жыл бұрын
I think what I'm trying to illustrate is that the DMR stem will allow you to get the bars higher than with any other stem. Cheers.

@Peanutdenver
@Peanutdenver 4 жыл бұрын
@@d2cdl You just need to throw in a 5 and 10mm or 20mm spacer below the stem to take advantage of the bars being higher since the stack height of the DMR is shorter then the RaceFace stem(measure the top of stem where your steering tube goes through to the bottom of that stem). I have the DMR Defy2 50mm (35MM) on my Evil, so I've been down this road. Best of luck.
