David, the best camera function review on the web. I've had my Fuji X-E2 for 6 or 7 months, never felt comfortable with it and couldn't find any helpful information on the internet. This clarified and simplified many of the functions. Great job!

Thank you a million times over. I've had my Fuji xe2 for two years now and just discovered in your video features I had no idea existed. You explain clearly and concisely all the camera workings, and even though I still cannot grasp the AF-L and AE-L functions and how to use them, I learned tons of other things from your film.

That's one of the best explanations of a camera's functions that I've seen! You have a voice that's very easy to listen to and not once did you say "I'm gonna go ahead and..." or "off of..." (my two personal hates of American English). In other words you can speak English. You also obviously understand the camera (and photography in general) and are enthusiastic about imparting your knowledge to others. Many thanks David!

Hello David, I just purchased a like new X-E2 (still had firmware v. 1) and just watched your video. Although I also have an X-T1, your Jumpstart Guide for the X-E2 was a great source of information and well presented. Other than the manual that comes with the camera, there aren't many good manuals now available for the X-E2. Thank you David for a very informative video and for taking the time to explain the features and some of the menu settings!

Hey David. Thank you so much for taking the time to put this video together. It was my first mirrorless camera, although it just died -I think I've outlasted the shutter and need to send in. I think the 5-axis IS is really stellar. Really useful video David. I recently got a used Lumix Gx85 (Gx80 in the U.K.), but I had a change of heart. David Sax in another video someone commented that one can only review the picture after shooting in viewfinder, and not on the lcd screen..Did the newer cameras firmware corrected this.
@dmsphoto179 жыл бұрын
Calvin W Hi Calvin From what I recall you can review on either. I believe though if you have the camera set-up to shoot using only the evf, then it will review in the evf, but if you have it set up to shoot using the lcd screen, it will review on the lcd. But I'm not certain. In the video I actually review an image using the lcd screen so I know it's possible. On my X-T1 it reviews on the lcd regardless of the setting and defaults to the lcd if I have it set up to shoot using lcd only. If I have it set to evf only to shoot, it reviews in the evf if I have my eye to the evf, but if I remove it then it displays on the lcd. If I have the eye-sensor on, then it reviews if I have my eye to the evf, but if I don't, then it displays on the lcd. I'm not certain the X E2 works this way though. Hope that helps! Cheers. Dave
@ctw21189 жыл бұрын
David Sax would be great if you can confirm if the xe2 does that ie shoot with evf and shows on lcd..the way most dslr works

Calvin W i am merely doing my research before decide on xe2 vs a6000. a6000 appears to be less expensive by about us$200-300..but i like the post processing of the xe2 in the camera..for example the use of different film types functionality and the use of color filter in B&W mode.. But not in the a6000. Does the XE2 have the HDR features build into one of its features, although most would prefer to do the merging of the bracketing shots in a hdr post processor.

Awesome video - Thanks - The XE2 is a wolf in sheep's clothes , not really a consumer camera more pro -semi pro and I think that gets missed in many of the internet reviews. I guess there are a lot of amateur EX2 owners out there deeply frustrated that they are not getting the results they 'instantly' expected from their Fuji. Hence the need for this great tutorial
@dmsphoto179 жыл бұрын
Hey Anthony I'm glad the video was helpful. I guess one of the truths is that there really are many great cameras out there. We each bring our own unique special sauce to the mix and with that our own preferences. Plus it's a really noisy World and everyone is trying to get your attention. At the time DPReview gave it a Gold rating. Can't beat that. But now, things like 4K video, higher MP count, electronic shutter, super low noise, advanced video recording options and the like are what attract many users. Maybe we need some "earplugs"... ;) Cheers.

Hey Rob I'm glad the video was useful. You bring up an interesting point. I always shoot RAW and have always naturally set my color space to Adobe RGB in camera. But from what I can gather, this may not matter when shooting RAW and it may be of concern only when shooting strictly jpegs. Thanks for pointing this out. I'm always importing via LR so if I want something for the web I simply just export using sRGB but I realize many folks may just shot jpeg output from camera and for those folks choosing the colorspace is likely to matter. Cheers.

Thanks for the video, great effort you have put in, really helpful. Just one question, you mentioned that the raw shooter might want to select aRGB over sRGB. But when shooting raw, does this really make a difference? It is after all all raw data that is stored and in the converter one can choose which color space to process to. I am asking bc I am shooting raw almost always but have this setting set to sRGB for the occasional in camera processing for web use.
@tomscott44389 жыл бұрын
Thanks for doing this. Really helped me blast through the setup quickly and I found I was much more familiar with the camera from the get go. One thing I did notice is at one point you had Dynamic Range set to 200 but towards the end (when you went over ISO) it was at 100 and then again it is switched back to 200 towards the end. Any particular reason for that?
@dmsphoto179 жыл бұрын
Hey Tom Great. I'm glad the video was helpful. I'm not sure why I switched that to be honest. It may have been by accident? On my X-T1 I have this set on 100 and it seems this works pretty well in terms of highlight recovery as needed when I process in LR. Here is DPReviews take on this - www.dpreview.com/reviews/fujifilm-x-e2/12 & here - www.dpreview.com/reviews/fujifilm-x-t1/15. You may have already seen these though. This apparently does effect RAW files, although if you just shoot jpegs, this may have a more significant effect/result. Apparently going from DR 100 to DR 200 requires a minimum base ISO of 400 and if you go to DR 400, then a minimum ISO of 800. You may need to play with this yourself depending on what you shoot. Let me know how it goes. Cheers. Dave
@tomscott44389 жыл бұрын
David Sax Figured that might be the case but wanted to check just the same. Happened to me once when I was in the Q menu. I shoot in RAW so I'm more inclined to leave it at 100 so I can utilize the lowest native ISO. (Although I have been playing around with custom settings for B&W where I bump up sharpness/highlight/shadow contrast, take down noise reduction and bring DR to 200. Results still TBD) Still learning my way around LR but so far I've had no issues with highlight recovery, sharpness, or IQ. FYI, had the exact same issue you encountered with regards to no one at my local camera store knowing much more than the basics about the Fuji line. Ended up online seeking out videos like this and a local pro-photographer who used a X100s as a backup to his 5DMkIII.
@dmsphoto179 жыл бұрын
***** I shoot in RAW as well. LR is a fantastic program. It's a great image processor and database manager. Dive deep into it and I think you'll be very pleased. Capture One may process the fuji files a bit better - possibly(?), but of course it's not a DB manager, and if you are looking for one program to handle RAW processing as well as organization then.... Cheers. Dave
@dmsphoto179 жыл бұрын
David Sax I would imagine that more local stores are becoming more aware of the Fuji line. My initial experience was after the x100 and x-pro 1 came out. Then about 1.5 years ago, still limited knowledge. The arrival of the X-T1 seemed to change there and now my local store now is a good resource, although I think Sony is the predominant mirror-free system being sold there.... Cheers.
@tomscott44389 жыл бұрын
David Sax I've used older versions of Elements but I'm finding LR to be much more sophisticated and feature-rich. Can't wait to dive more deeply into it. Afraid my local camera store is getting worse rather than better. They treat mirrorless-interchangeable like a fad and really only exist for the occasional (last minute) accessory purchase or for processing services. From a general service, expertise, price, product availability, etc level they have thrown in the towel and acquiesced to the big (B&H) online stores. I want to support them but they make it difficult. Kind of sad really.

Hi,, Very good guide! Can I pick your brain on two problems I have been having.. 1).. When I set the camera to RAW&F It only shows RAW in review and in Lightroom, how do I get it to show both? 2).. Do you have any links or info on understanding the C1 to C7 and Basic in the Q menu? Many thanks again,, Hans
@dmsphoto178 жыл бұрын
Hello Hans Well I believe that the review on the camera is essentially a jpeg - it's not really a Raw file and it may show the jpeg set under the custom menu provided you have created various pre-sets and one of these custom settings have been selected. You also may need to select a custom display setting to preview this. Not sure though. n the XT-1 this is done via the Disp/Back button. It will cycle thru the options. The XE-2 may operate in the same manner. In terms of LR, in preferences, found under the "General" preference heading, make sure you select "Treat jpeg files next to Raw files as separate photos". If you don't select this, then you won't see the jpegs. In terms of the custom settings, this basically applies to jpegs and creating preferences for jpeg files. Under the Camera Menu (select menu and the camera icon #3 (at least that's what it is on the XT-1) - Menu 3, then select the edit/save custom setting, select custom 1 - 7 and choose your preferences, then this will create a jpeg with the look you prefer. Save this and then you may select this via the Q menu. Make sense? I personally never shoot jpegs so my direct experience is very limited, but hopefully this will provide some basic sense for what to do. Others who actually use this will be a better resource for you. Remember that Raw files may always be adjusted. They are not permanent whereas jpegs "bake" the settings into the file. Please let me know if I may be of further assistance. Be Well. Dave

Fantastic, comprehensive overview of the XE2. I will review this many times as a reference guide. Much appreciated by someone who just acquired the camera. Have you done one for the XPro1? Thx, Howie

Hi and thanks for all the information. Truly helpful. I am unable to see thru my viewfinder. Any clue as to why? I'd appreciate it.

***** Hi Aiesha Glad it was helpful. In terms of your evf, perhaps go to the menu (Set-up Menu 2) and check to see what's been selected. Perhaps it's set only for the LCD? Best of luck!

Hello David. I'm planning to buy this as a present for my senior dad. Can you tell me if the auto functions like a normal point and shoot? Or do you have to press the shutter halfway to focus like in DSLR?

Hi Lenny For AF, you press 1/2-way. Of course you can use MF as well. Let me know how it goes... Be Well Dave

Hello Simon I'm glad the video was helpful. A while back I sold my Canon gear and made a full switch to Fuji. I have an X-T1. I really appreciate the form factor so much better. I made the jump into the mirror-free cameras with the Olympus O-MD E-M5 back in 2012. Loved the performance and I still do. I used my Canon 5DII less and less over time and it just sat there. I wanted to jump to a little larger sensor as I often shoot in low-light situations so the Fuji's did better than the MFT in this regard by 1-2 stops for my taste. Although the IQ of the OLY is really quite remarkable. It's actually what I used to make the video. Enjoy your new Fuji! Cheers. Dave

I have this camera and I love it but be prepared for a bit of AF hunting. That's the only thing I would say to be ready for.

I've got it now, so much fun learning the system and I've already got myself an assortment of lens . Kit lens 18 - 55 also 55-200, cctv 35mm F 1,7 and a 50mm SMC Takumar F 1.4.from an old Pentax. I really do enjoy the dedicated dials and aperture ring

+Shaun Hilton Hi Shaun Congrats on your purchase. So I actually use an X-T1. The story is that I was looking for a camera for my older cousin and thought given the functionality and price-range, the X-E2 was a good fit for him. So I ordered it for him then borrowed it for a week so I could learn how to use it properly. I originally wrote out a modified user manual and then realized a video would be most helpful. So that's how the video came about. All-Infall I like what Fuji has created and continues to do. Of course there are still things one would want or would like to see done differently. For me the size and ergonomics is what have drawn me to the the Fuji system. The image quality is great as well. I like the mirrorless systems and rid myself of my Canon gear. I miss the larger sensor a bit but I totally appreciate the smaller form factor which was one of my main goals. That said, I really like what Sony is doing right now with their A7 series - the Ver. II updates. Had these been around when I bought my X-T1 I may have gone that route. I really like the in-body IS. My Olympus OM-D E-M5 has this and its fantastic (This was my first jump into the mirrorless cameras and I think it's a great camera. The MFT's are nice and compact). The Sony lenses at that time were also a bit large for what I wanted, but they've since come out with newer prime lenses which are smaller. Honestly I could see having both systems, especially if Fuji sticks to it's 16MP sensor. I like the ability to print really large and also like to be able to crop into a photo, so the large sensors are a bonus in that regard. I like the idea of Fuji creating an affordable medium format system for this purpose.... We'll see :) Best wishes & Be Well & Have fun with your new camera! The 56mm is a great lens...

Hey David, I recently bought a Fuji X-E2 and it was taking great pictures until one day it froze on me. I tried to take a photo, just as i usually would, but this time it would only close the lens but never reopen, thus never taking the actual photo. In this frozen state the display was black but still on. the on/off switch didn't work but if i removed the battery and re-entered it, the camera would turn on, open the lens as if it was completing a photo and then everything would work perfectly fine. i could play with the settings but it would still never take a photo. when it occurred a red light above the AF-L button on the top right lit up. I've asked several people about this problem and i've even tried switching my SD card and lens but to no avail. do you have any insight on this matter? please let me know and thank you for your time.
@dmsphoto179 жыл бұрын
Vincent Warren Hey Vincent Sorry to hear about your difficulties. Seems like you did what I would do - remove the battery and replace it, remove the lens and replace it as well. Perhaps clean the lens contacts. But I'm no expert. Have you contacted Fuji yet? If you've tried all the basic things, I think that would be my next step. Or if you purchased from a local store, they may have a service department and can trouble-shoot for you. Did you purchase new or used? If new than you still probably are under warranty. Best of luck and let me know how it goes. Be Well Dave
