Thanks, actually should have worked into the video me getting a flat tire in the middle of no where without cell service and limping back on my donut when I went to a location to shoot. The happy accident was my original hike was cut short so I went to Abiqua Falls instead and the flowers were massively in bloom.

That’s Captain Peanut, he lived about a block away. I’d open my door and an orange blur would dart past me into my house. I accidentally shut him in my house for about an hour as I didn’t see him run into the house and when I got back to the store, there was Captain Peanut, asleep on the couch. He was extremely friendly, to the point he’d run up to random people walking and hang out in a park that was next to his house to play with kids and parents. His owner moved. Now I have my own cat, Jeff. I need to get more footage of him.

These knockoffs have been around for as long as the superdrive has existed although in different fashion. We had a few of them around way back when that had two usb cables to provide enough power. The knockoffs were useful as they were one of the thinnest external dvd drives to transport that could be used with virtually anything be it a desktop you didn't trust the built in, a netbook with no drive slot, or a server with no drive slot. I doubt they were upcycled drive back then, but wouldn't be shocked if they were the same design but using new drives identical to what would go in the macbooks.

The SuperDrive is an awesome accessory! Yeah it can’t be used with a USB hub and it’s only USB 2.0, but it’s built way better than other drives available. Especially when you consider the price, they are easy to get for a good deal. As cool as it is to use optical media on modern Macs, you just can’t beat the internal drives on the Power Mac or Mac Pros. I know there are faster drives available for modern systems, but the drives like this one were built well, especially considering optical media was in use more. I didn’t even know there were clones of the SuperDrive, but at least this one has a nice drive instead of something low end. The housing is something else though. I can see this potentially being useful as a spare drive or as something to repair a real SuperDrive. Great video!

Amazon is also plagued with fake SuperDrives with a blu ray drive but I never thought you would cover one of those fakes. PS (Your blue ray video was a great watch and it helped me rip my first few blu rays so thanks!)

I hadn't seen them before so I was kinda fascinated as it's a product that doesn't seem like there's much of a point. AirPods are massively popular whereas this is just a forgettable media drive.

Yeah I also like that you got to the bottom of this since I was always so confused as to how they managed to make drives so cheap so it definitely makes sense when you see that it’s just an old drive in a cheap usb enclosure. And counterfeit AirPods are such a big problem too, I see daily at least 3-10 people on Reddit post about fake AirPods they got on thinking they were real.

At a certain point in early 10s I bought a cabinet and placed the CD Drive of my beloved Macbook intel inside that. That was rock solid and still working.

The “weird” thing about Apple’s SuperDrive is it would only work with Macs that didn’t already have a CD/DVD drive. Can be frustrating if it had a drive that didn’t work properly and you’d need to disconnect it internally first.

I bought dozens of these already… empty. The case and included SATA-to-USB adapter board are sold on ebay, and great for fitting Apple’s own OEM Matsushita drives, both the 9.5 mm and the 12 mm variants found respectively on MacBooks and iMacs (if you notice, the case has a little post that you’re supposed to break if you need to fit the slim profile ones). It’s funny that you’ve only found out about these now, I’ve been buying them for over a decade now. Interestingly, I did find the cable flimsy, and shortly after I switched from an iMac to a Mac Studio and two LG displays, I took the chance to snip a busted, OEM USB-to-Lightning cable and graft it onto this thing. I effectively have an almost 100% OEM SuperDrive, if you don’t count the crusty adapter board and the cheap case, which is velcro’d to the back of one of the displays and makes for a great “poor man’s iMac”… 😂

I finally replaced my Superdrives with a Sonnet Echo 15+. Sonnet sold a thunderbolt blu-ray drive with dock ports and room for two 2.5in drives back in 2015. Sonnet charged an arm and leg for the drive when it was first released and the price never dropped. Thought I could find one on ebay for cheap. It's been ten years and I finally scored a Sonet Echo 15+ for $150. They normally sell for $300-600 on ebay. The Echo 15+ is my dedicated HandBrake DVD ripping station. I loaded my Echo 15+ with two 4tb sata ssd's.

I bought an aftermarket empty case after I added a caddy inside my old macbook and kept the original drive with the superdrive from the macbook and it has been serving me well for many years, only issue is the disc drive I pulled out from my macbook pro only has 8x burning which is the worst out of all the other drives I have, bht it is the most aesthetically pleasing solution so it still serves me well where impression counts

I recently put a second drive in my MacBook Pro and wanted an enclosure for the old SuperDrive. Looked on eBay and found an Apple drive cheaper than an enclosure. The issue was that it was a MacBook Air branded drive which, bizarrely, won't work on the MBP as it's been locked out by the firmware. It seems not all SuperDrives are created equal.

@@dmug I think that's typical Apple. If they don't want something to work the lock it like in the old Mac OS X Install DVDs with the White and black list of devices that could and couldn't install the OS. But with the SuperDrive it really makes no sense.

Possibly related but by default the Apple SuperDrive won’t work under Windows or Linux (it will be recognised but it won’t accept discs). You have to send it a series of SCSI commands (which macOS presumably does by default when it recognises a connected SuperDrive) and then it does work (Google “Apple SuperDrive Linux”).

@@dmug The superdrive was only officially compatible with laptops post 2008 that lacked an optical drive. Because it does not use the proper USB 2 power delivery, the devices with an optical drive were not designed to deliver the required power to the drive. The drive the original commenter has would work in a 2013+ retina macbook pro without issue.

5:45. No. Most of those "USB 3.0" external drives are *NOT* USB 3.0. Just because they have a blue connector and write "3.0" in the description, doesn't mean that internally they're connected at USB 3.0. You can actually see at 7:03, there's only 5 wires going into the drive from the USB cable, meaning it cannot be USB 3.0
