Күн бұрын

Sick of the sweltering Florida heat, I head north to my friend Tom's place in Georgia. Along the way, I camp near a mangrove swamp, and struggle to keep my tire from leaking. I ride through the big city of Atlanta to Tom's place in Gainesville, where we mount and balance a new tire using his home equipment.

Tire plug , rope type ., if you have a clean puncture such as a nail, don't ream the hole too much & certainly with nothing sharp that can tear the tire cords. If it's a hole from glass etc, you're reaming it just to get it free of chips etc. Put rubber cement on the tire plug & insert in the tire (which should have some air in it to make this work). Once it's in as far as you can get it, with just the tails sticking out 1/4 inch, pull it slowly back untill the tool is just barely out . , by this time you have 4 layers in the hole , now cut it off as close as you can get it . want to argue with me , fine I worked in a tire shop .The glue is very important..

Hay Joe that tire you took off looked pretty good yet, that's a shame. I have patched quite a few car tires but then I got lazy and started plugging them. I never had any leak but I always put a bunch of tire patching glue on the plug. It slides in easier and helps to seal. You might want to get a tube of tire patching glue to take with you on your adventures. Puncture seal can be good in a pinch but I have heard that if left in the tire for a long time it can dry out and leave some nasty sh*t on the rim. On the road of life that was just a bump in the road so lookout for the bumps.

Something that substantially increased the life of my tires on my ST1300 was buying a TPMS motorcycle set. They come with sensors that replace your valve stem caps and t little sensor that you can clip to your bars. Cost about $35 on eBay. It's payed for its self in a single set of tires. Had a set of Michelin road 4' for heavy bikes, tires lasted 7,500 miles. Bought a new identical set installed those with the TPMS sensors and maintained 42psi, and no joke, doubled the mileage replacing them both at 14,500 miles. It also helped when I was riding at 109 and the added heat increased my tire pressure to almost 50 psi. Mine even provide tire temperature as well but I won't go into that. 😅

Saw the thumbnail and immediately thought, "OOOOOHH shit! That second plug failed." Glad I was wrong. Bummer deal man. It's gotta be all that riding off the beaten path shit. For bicycle tires, they used to make a plastic insert that fits inside the tire, between the tire and the tube. Wonder if they make such an item for a motorcycle tire? Maybe.... Possibly...... WTF do I know! I've never felt the need to look for such an item. Slime maybe?

Put glue on the reamer tip and in the hole before reaming and put some more on the tip of the plug pusher before pushing the plug in, you have to have some urgency so you get it all in there before the glue sets, let the tire sit for 15 minutes before adding air

Tire cupping... I have a problem with my front tire scalloping. I've learned from others with the same bike to add just 2psi extra and it worked. My scalloping stopped and it has actually evened itself out to smooth again. My back tire is a 200/50x17 and I don't have a tire changing machine. But with an exceptional number of choice words I can get it done.

I installed Dunlop Roadsmart3s on my bike last Fall 2023. DOT codes Week in April 2023. Good tires. I noticed a definite positive difference over the original Bridgestone tires. Both handling and road feel were improved. The Dunlops dealers increased the price this year on the Roadsmart3s, and more than just a little.

Good video Joe. I put a set of those Road Smart 3’s on my nc700 a month ago. Really decent tire for highway riding. BTW if you ever want a good high mileage tire look at the Motoz Tractionator GPS, though it is marketed as a 50/50 street trail tire. It does exceptionally well on a loaded bike on the highway. I put over 14K miles on the rear . You can get them through Rocky MTN ATV.

tire plugs. When I was a kid working in gas station/service stations, changing and fixing tires and everything else to do with cars. We had rubber bullet plugs for plugging tubeless tires. They occasional failed.. i’ve never seen an inside the tire rubber patch fail. Rough up the Area around the whole inside the tire, clean it off with some kind of cleaner I don’t remember, put a layer of rubber cement in the area you were going to apply the patch, let that glue completely dry, sometimes even lighting it with a match,, Then let the glue set up for maybe five minutes. Then apply the patch after peeling the protective paper off of the patch and roll it on with a roller as wide as a silvet dollar..(skinny)..never had one fail A lifelong motorcycle mechanic I knew for a few decades. I met him when he was 60. He had several shops he kept moving for some reason. But he lived in the Shoppes. He was famous for wheels he would fix or lace up new ones, and he was a BMW mechanic/machinist. He was also famous for dual plugging the old air cooled BMW a heads so they would not detonate on the ever changing gasoline.. in fact, the only motorcycle I ever heard that Nate was a BMW, air cooled twin. You never heard anything like it, it sounded like a metallic gunshot, explosion inside the engine… i’ve heard that detonation can actually break pistons. After I heard that, I believe it. he was at a BMW national rally somewhere one time. He saw a demonstration.of these small pointy tire plugs that were about the size of the front of an a ink pen. The kit came with a small tool. It was like a three sided file attached to a screwdriver type handle. That was the installing tool and the reamer for making the hole the correct size for the plug. those plugs were narrow waisted in the middle..and the skinny part around the waist had a small membrane protecting the glue area. You simply remove whatever is stuck in your tire, you stick the reamer in the hole, then you remove the plastic protecting the area with the adhesive on it …when you push this plug in and it will only go in until that waste/skinny part snaps into place inside the hole because the plug after the waist is about as big around as a pencil and won’t push in to the hole. The vendor had a aquarium like water tank, and he had a tire submerged in this tank. It had 100 of these plugs in it. And there was a pressure gauge attached to the Schrader valve showing that the tire had 80 psi in it. these plugs are about half an inch long and the diameter of a pencil. They have a metal part in front, where it is as pointy as a practice arrow, and these plugs are hollow for the tool to fit in. The piece of metal in the front of the plug is so that the tool won’t penetrate or pierce the plug as you’re pushing it in to the hole.. I carried those type of plugs on my motorcycles back in the 80s and 90s. But I never had a flat and got a chance to use them. about string plugs. Since the 1990s, I have been using the string plugs, and I use glue. I have a video on my channel showing how to plug a tire, and reamed the hole to make sure that it will except the string plug, and I put glue on the reamer and redo the hole to get the glue to coat the inside of the hole, and I put the glue on the plug. You need to let that string plug with glue on it sit for a while before putting it in the hole. I have plugged quite a few tires on cars and motorcycles using these string plugs. Have not had one fail yet. back when I worked in those service stations when I was a kid, it was explained to me that those rubber plugs can be attacked by the steel belts inside tires as you drive making them fail, and that is one reason the string plugs are better, they are less susceptible to being damaged by tire belts.. I was a motorcycle salesman, part time in several shops. The last job I worked, and did a lot of business selling quads. When we would build a new quad, before delivery, we would put so many ounces of a slime type liquid into each tire. Because riding off road here in Western Pennsylvania, The most common type of flat was caused by thorns. In this slime type liquid inside the tires, people swore by it because they would notice thorns in their tires and they didn’t leak. I was riding with a group of guys, about 10 of us, they would take 5 gallons of gas and 5 gallons of beer. Every time they went to ride per machine, and they were always in a hurry. If you want to see a very tough area very entertaining to ride… there are many many videos of yellow Creek on KZbin, or Hillsville. There are some pretty gnarly areas where we would ride, and then some of the videos on KZbin, you can see these quads just tumbling down a lot of these hills… on one of these rides, one of the guys got a slice in the sidewall of his quad tire/rear tire. The rim was spinning inside the tire, and because the place is so hilly he couldn’t just limp it back. So this slice was about 4 inches long. He just put a bunch of those string plugs in there, one next to the other next to the other, and it worked.. I have a video on KZbin showing some special tools. Some people may never have heard of. One of them is a bead breaker that you can carry with you on your machine. It will not go around a tire that is larger than 180 mm though. I remember when you had a bad tire failure in Mexico on your Honda ST. I was thinking that you could have used that bead breaker that I have and covered up the hole from inside the tire with a patch and put a tube in there.. have you ever noticed that it’s always the back tire that goes flat from a puncture? I have a theory about that. I think the front wheel kicks up the nails and screws that are on the road because they bounce off of construction workers trucks. They lay in the center of the lane on the highway where the car tires never go. But if you ride in the center of the lane between the tire tracks that cars ride on,that’s where all the debris is, staples, screws, nails, sharp chunks of metal, and I have seen this stuff bouncing out of the beds of pick up trucks. There’s a gap at the end of the bed right in front of the tailgate for them to fall fhru.. then you come along on your motorcycle riding in the center of the lane, your front tire kicks up the debris, and your back tire rolls over it while it’s still bouncing, and in the perfect position to puncture your tire.. that’s why I always avoid riding in the center of any lane on the highway if I can help it. Love your videos

Never reem the hole more than once in and once out. Your just sawing a bigger hole in the tire and making the plug have to try and plug a bigger hole. In, out, and plug. Fits super tight. 😉 I've never had one fail or leak doing this way, even on car tires. 🛵💨
