My biggest problem with low level poisonous creatures is that if they hit, it's most likely man down, if not a straight-up kill from massive damage. With a crit, this becomes an almost guarantee. 1d8+2d6 is a max of 20 damage, with an average of 11.5.

Agreed. The giant spider is a glass cannon. I think they would be better having a small table of poison type effects on the stat block. The DM roles in secret and the players won’t know until they get bit.
