If you're going to play/DM an evil campaign it's incredibly important to discuss (and agree) what is meant by "evil". Is it Sopranos, Casino, Reservoir Dogs, Shining, Halloween, Texas Chainsaw or Human Centipede? Or something else? Even being an evil campaign there are (or probably should be) lines that aren't crossed, topics that are off-limits. An "evil campaign" can be incredibly fun, if it's approached seriously, but far too often an "evil game" is simply code for "everyone plays a *chaotic-stupid murder-hobo".*

There was this one character of mine who wanted to colonize a barren land because he believed there was potential in the land and it just needed enough funding. So I had him send back money to the colony he set up there so they can build up and search for water wells. The party eventually reached the colony and it was already thriving with greenery and farmland with plants unique to the area, some of which were on the verge of extinction before the colony's intervention. And soon a mine was being dug once the party arrived. And finally when the party returned to the colony years later in the campaign, it had become a lively city hub that was self sustaining on their water pump tech. Making the colony a popular stopping point for water traders in the nearby desert villages. THAT is how you colonize. None of that bullshit warring.

The "Those Guys" post really highlights just how far rhudimentary empathy and consideration can take you. How? Well I'm autistic playing a Curse of Strahd campaign, right from the get go we had a Strahd specific trigger list. One of the other players listed that mention of self harm bothered them but I was playing a Blood Hunter at the time, self harm is literally hiw they use their powers. So I simple didn't describe anything and just said "I use my Crimson Rite and take 2 damage", I'm not losing anything by not going into graphic detail to respect that player. Conversely? That same player is a theater kid and gets WAY into roleplaying in a good way. However they used to get too into it and getting really loud. I have a lot of sensory sensitivities and loud noises and yelling are part of it, so I asked them to please not get so loud and they stopped. This campaign has been going on for almost 2 years and we've all become good friends. This is what happens when you don't make your whole personality about being abrasive and rude.

I don't know if it's just me, but I have had a lot of "that's what my character would do" moments as a player and none of party has ever been mad or frustrated with me about it. This is across multiple TTRPGs, spanning multiple years with the same players - some of whom have also DMed, and one main DM who just takes a short shot break every once in a while. Does that just mean I'm not doing it the 'wrong' way, or does it mean they're excusing it? Because our main DM will boot anyone without fear - they banned their friend of fifteen years and completely cut him out of their life over a hostile discussion where said friend doubled down on some toxic behavior. There must be other people who don't just use "it's what my character would do" to justify being a murder hobo or otherwise be gross, right? Because a lot of times, in my experience, I sigh in exasperation because I'm playing a character fundamentally more "stupid" than me, and I do what I think they would do instead of what I would personally do. That's roleplay, isn't it?

I have ran the adventure as a DM (we went on indefinite Hiatus a few months ago sadly, right before the final battle). I was open with the DM about this, and with other players. I remember GENERAL plots of some quests, and a few Twists that come from LATER in the adventure, but only because they are so ingrained in my memory. When it comes to puzzles, I might remember a few, bit that would take more effort than RPing my character as they should be, less in the Know on puzzles and such. I can separate neta knowledge from my character with ease, and honestly want to take a Backseat since the table has at least 1 new player. Most of what I did in session 1 was help establish our group and try to encourage RP between party members

(same person, in the same message, when I pointed out they wouldn't be playing at my tables again unless they stopped asking an underage player about their sexual preferences, whether they hated their genitals enough to be trans, etc.) For further context, a message came from them about two years after the table fell apart due to these and other issues and I naively thought that maybe in that time, they became a better person, so I entertained them at first and gave them a list of unacceptable behaviors they did while playing and that would have to change. They had a complete meltdown and, obviously, were not permitted to join again.

I feel like you actually can blame the DM of that last story. Not for failing to pick up on bad communication, but for establishing it in the first place. Evil campaigns can be real touchy if everyone isn't on the same page. If you're going to run one, you need to build a good system of communication, boundaries, and expectations between your players. It will break down otherwise. And if you can't handle that, you should not be dming it. Otherwise you're just enabling a situation that will make people uncomfortable

you're a group of people. you are uncomfortable by default

@@Forever-GM-Dusty that's not uncomfortable then. being uncomfortable is like being in a room that is 2 degrees above average temp.

@@ghost7685 so was this an argument predicted off my not using a strong enough word despite my message being obvious and clear? You should really be aware of how you came off, as to the rest of the world it seemed you were arguing that because people aren't perfectly happy with each other all the time, this situation wasn't necessarily worse in a meaningful way

I got band after killing off two parties as a noob apparently i have a knack for finding a one shot environmental kill in the first 10min damn why are all my characters mentally ill 😂. So per there decision ive never played again 😢 i don't want to ruin it for the community 😊

in the last story the op is the problem player. "evil" but he doesn't want anything bad.

Thats what i'm saying! How are you going to join an Evil campaign and then complain after other players do some evil shit?
@ArcCaravan4 ай бұрын
Evil campaign doesn't mean you have to enjoy torture and be a murderhobo. There's more than one way to be an evil character.
@ghost76854 ай бұрын
@@ArcCaravan You're just making an excuse to not let others enjoy it. They have agreed to it so let them do it. I can apply your logic in a different way. "You can be good in different ways. In their campaign they taught the child that dogs can be dangerous. Not by keeping him safe from the aggressive dog and informing him, but rather letting the dog rip of his arm so he learns how dangerous dogs can be." It's 100% not about the campaign but rather that guys "feelings" and how he wants everyone to cater to him.

@@ghost7685 Sounds like the pot calling the kettle black, since you're looking for an excuse to portray someone who doesn't like graphic violence as wrong just for not liking it. Nothing wrong with people enjoying fictional graphic violence, but forcing it on others is a problem. Acknowledging it's a problem is the first step to discussing solutions, which is better than just suffering quietly just to cater to someone who doesn't care about ruining the game for others.

@@ArcCaravan The guys don't like it, they go into a campaign designed around it, so they knew the thing they don't like would be there. Now they are upset that the thing they don't like is in the campaign where it is agreed that it will be there. The op was the problem, either he shuts up and just bares with it or he leaves. This is like going to a metal concert and complaining about the music.

The middle story with "those guys", you have way the hell too many of these. Not to be in the what is true realm, but maybe context for why you've got too so many of these shitty player stories.

DM for a "everyone welcome" game night at a local game store? There are lots of scenarios where you don't get to pick and vet your players but "have to" play with whoever shows up.

There’s a fair bit of genuine assholes in that bunch but that DM is definitely leaving out details on purpose. Some of them sound more like the DM didn’t handle the interaction well and they’re trying to save face.

Not everyone has that option and it's not always a silver bullet either. Plenty of OPs have mentioned failing to have a session zero because "We all knew each other," and yet, they still ended up in a horror story.
