The nerds and geeks won the social competition for millenials, Gen z, and as far as I can tell, Gen alpha as well. Therefore it isn't lame or embarrassing to be I to things like D&D. So the sample size of potential players has increased and for years now, with popularity of the Fandom increasing, many professional actors and improv players have become professional D&D players. And this is the creme of the crop of not Critical Role players. 5/7 are professional GMs as far as I am aware, as I have watched/listened to their games. Rules nerd notes: 18:48 Kaiho's crit with green flame blade: The numbers B. Dave said out loud are surprising. The final step of 18 to 36 total sounds like he doubled 18, but a crit only doubles the dice. The last step should be adding fixed modifiers (like your +Dex or +Str) *after* that. Since he's level 5, Green Flame Blade does normal attack damage plus 1d8 to the primary target. (And 1d8 +Int to the secondary target within 5 feet). (Bladesingers only get extra attack at lvl6, unlike full martial classes.) So (1d8 + weapon die) x 2 + dex or str. If he's using a 1d8 weapon like a Rapier, and has +4 Dex, max crit damage would be 2x (8+8) + 4 = 32 + 4 = 36. He said he got an 8 on the physical die for the attack, so yeah, possible, but not involving an 18 at any point. Probably he did 8 + dex + 1d8 (fire) to get 18, and then doubled that. I like that they've edited out most of the time spent doing math and rolling dice, so it's possible some clue got distorted or lost from what process B Dave actually went through to get 36. 23:44 - Indeed, in 5e, if something prevents you from taking Actions, you can't take Bonus Actions either. This is only mentioned in the section about bonus actions, not about the effects that imply this. Good to see Brennan got this rule sorted out since an early Unsleeping City episode where he had a stunned enemy Misty Step away, due to the 5e rules failing to clearly list all the side effects of Incapacitated. (There's an rpg stackexchange Q&A about the "hidden" effects of Incapacitated, like losing concentration.) 25:20 - An "organ grinder" is a person who operates a hand-cranked organ. Aabria has the words correct, but didn't figure out from context (and Brennan having the NPC say "my instrument!") that only the actual organ was hit. I've never heard of "organ grinder" being used to describe the mechanical instrument, and merriam-webster doesn't support that usage which Brennan is claiming. It only lists 1 definition: : one that cranks a hand organ especially : a street musician who operates a barrel organ Wikipedia's "Street organ" article agrees with the dictionary and Aabria, only using "grinder" to describe the operator. (Or owner of a monkey who did the actual crank turning, for those who didn't do it themselves.) 28:33 Umber Hulk fails its save against Grease, it's now prone. 31:54 - It must have rolled pretty well to hit Bac Si, since prone gives disadvantage on attacks. 32:50 - Hide is mechanically unnecessary before a melee attack, since it's prone. But an attack from more than 5ft away will have disadvantage, so hiding will only cancel that out for a straight roll. But Kaiho is adjacent, so that will give her Sneak Attack where a roll with disadvantage wouldn't have. 33:05 - Fear of clowns is "coulrophobia". I had to look it up to remember what word Riddle is mispronouncing as "cowl-phobia". (Intentionally on Meagan's part I assume.) 43:13 - Kaiho already took advantage because of the Help action, I thought. He said "17, even with advantage". Advantage doesn't stack, so unless he forgot to actually roll twice, he shouldn't be rolling again now. 43:57 - Bladesinging doesn't give advantage on dex *saves*, just on Acrobatics checks (e.g. to avoid / escape a grapple). At least that's the TCE version of the class; IDK if it was different in UA. And Grease is a dex save, not check. Narratively it works well, though; gracefully moving on a greased surface is something you'd expect bladesinging to help with. Moreso than reacting to a fireball, especially when he cast the grease himself and knows it's there. 51:46 - Grease is *not* concentration. It just lasts 1 minute, even if the caster dies, let alone just unconscious. (And rules-as-written, he couldn't dismiss it even if he wanted to. That's a Brennan house rule that got mentioned earlier.) So RAW, the Umber Hulk would have to save against Grease at the end of its turn, same DC. Narratively, the DC is how slippery the grease is, or something, and that was determined when it was cast. The caster isn't actively involved in making creatures fall, just in the initial setup. Find Familiar is also not concentration, and doesn't say anything in the spell description about dismissing or losing the familiar if the master becomes unconscious or dies. So his owl familiar would just stay around, too. If the familiar itself dropped to 0 hp, it would vanish. Also, if it was the *first* attack that hit, the second attack might also hit and inflict two failed death saves. Shield would still be active, but Bladesong would end, so he'd lose his +Int bonus to AC. And the attack would be at advantage on a prone target within 5ft. A standard monster-manual Umber Hulk gets 3 attacks, 2 claws and one mandibles. 52:30 - Not healing when a PC is at 0 HP is almost always a mistake, unless someone else in the party has healing spells. A Healing Word + damage cantrip would be a good choice, and not require her to get closer. (Starting her turn *within* 30 ft would RAW require a Cha save if she can see the Umber Hulk's eyes, debatable if that applies when right at 30ft. Casting a longer ranged spell like Guiding Bolt, she could have stepped back with her eyes closed.)
@Peter_Cordes2 жыл бұрын
(continued.) 53:00 - Rolling the attack with disadvantage vs. rolling a cha save basically comes down to whether she has a better chance to hit again (another straight roll) with her spell attack mod against its AC, vs. whether she can make a Cha save with her +2 modifier. They don't know the DC on the confusion save, but IIRC Kaiho made it with a 16 or something. I looked up Umber Hulk, it's AC18 vs. a DC15 cha save. Her spell attack modifier is almost certainly +5 or better, so attack with disadvantage is easier than the Cha save. And attacking with disadvantage would still leave her able to take a bonus action (perhaps healing word if they're not enforcing the rules that stop you from casting two non-cantrips as action+bonus), and wouldn't risk forced movement or attacking someone adjacent (i.e. starting a fight with someone in the crowd, or killing a rando civilian.) But they might not know that the AC is only 18; they saw a 17 miss but I forget the lowest hit they've seen. And they don't know the Cha save DC is as high as 15; I think everyone that's failed has been under 10. Still, with such low +Cha save modifiers, it's unwise to attempt. Also, it seems she wasn't out of range of the 30ft effect after all. With the party having some bad luck, some DMs might have been generous and said it was just out of range for confusion. But not Brennan, he's going to make PCs play smarter, e.g. choose saving-throw spells. Unfortunate that Bac Si got all the way into rolling to hit before Brennan made her decide to avert her gaze or not, though; the decision coming after already rolling a number that would hit probably tempted her into taking the bigger risk. And/or could be an RP thing for her character to over-estimate her ability to withstand the confusion effect after being affected by it the first round. 55:15 - Ooh, with Lucky, taking disadvantage on the attack roll would have been even better. RAW, Lucky turns disadvantage into super-advantage: roll one more d20 and take the best of the dice that have been rolled, even if you started with disadvantage. So she would have hit, since the initial roll was a hit, and Lucky would let her use it. 57:08 - Good question about being a construct, but no, it works on all creatures. Even being immune to charm effects wouldn't help. I like Brennan's explanation of it working on all creatures with a mind, including constructs. 57:40 - RAW, you can't get Sneak Attack if the final roll is at disadvantage. If you're using the flanking rules, flanking for advantage could cancel disadvantage as well as giving you sneak attack from adjacent ally, but that would be a straight roll. 58:15 - Wails from the Grave (or as the subtitles would have it, whales). Interesting, so she's playing the Phantom subclass from TCE. Huh, neat class feature, gives the rogue some cleave damage, half their sneak attack dice to a second target you can see within 30ft of the first (no save), up to proficiency-bonus times per long rest. And after a short or long rest, you can pick one skill or tool to be temporarily proficient in. (Whispers of the Dead feature also at 3rd level). So you can adapt yourself to a skill check you anticipate needing to make. Very cool, and mechanically useful for a skill-monkey, especially for any dex skills they don't have. The tool proficiency usage has some RP potential I think, since tools often go overlooked. And PCs normally don't invest the time to learn to be a skilled bricklayer, potter, or whatever other esoteric skill. But when it comes up in a campaign, could be fun to be able to use some obscure tool the party finds. Or to become a forger for an afternoon. 1:01:20 - I thought they'd all be level 5. As a monk she should have 2 attacks as part of her action; this first disadvantage then back to straight roll was only the first attack. (Unless she's a multi-class build?) And she could roll damage to see if it dies before deciding to spend a Ki on Flurry of Blows for 2 more attacks, vs. 1 as a bonus action for free. 1:07:14 - Sounds like she didn't realize he was at 0HP earlier, that would explain not healing. Also, as a Grave cleric (like Caduceus of critical role), she could have used a reaction earlier to cancel the crit the umber hulk got on Kaiho. Except no, I think that was after she failed her first Cha, so was Confused by it that round, unable to take reactions until the start of her next turn. 1:12:35 - Wend your way? Thunder Step only has 90ft range. Maybe Neba lives one level down or something, and the path by foot without going through walls is circuitous? (Technically, Thunder Step requires you to see the target space, unlike Dimension Door.)

These episodes are entirely too short. If they could run around 3-5 hours, that would be great. I’m invested.

It would be cool if we had access to their character sheets or something. Because some of these rolls they are making are mind boggling.

27 with disadvantage??? Holy hell!
@CurlyJohnson19922 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I'm confused by that. He would've needed to roll incredibly well for a disadvantage roll that high, yet he barely reacted at all. He acted like hitting a 27 with disadvantage was a totally normal thing.

@@CurlyJohnson1992 Yeah I wonder if he burned a Precision Attack without saying it out loud (or it got cut in the edit). We know he's a Battle Master at least level 5 (two attacks) so +3 (maybe higher), almost certainly Archery Style for +2, probably Dex 20 for +5, probably at least a +1 weapon maybe a +2. So 30 without a nat 20 is possible but unlikely. Add in even an average (+4) roll on Prevision Attack though and it becomes a mid-tier roll that wouldn't be a big shock.

The grease spell shouldn't have stopped just because Kaiho went down, its not concentration, it should have lasted the full minute regardless of him being conscious or not.
