I remember my first bastion as a player. At lvl 1 in AD&D (way backin the early 1980s) we were based in the village of Hommlet and we went to deal with the bandits that had taken over the ruins of the Old Moat House. Once we successfully dealt with the bandits, monsters, and other creatures that lived there, the village council gave us the deed to that ruin and we turned it into our own bastion, which we called Conquest Hall. That was our base of operations when we dealt with the original Temple of Elemental Evil, dealt with dragons and giants troubling various parts of the realm of Greyhawk. Eventually I think all of our original characters were killed exploring the original Tomb of Horrors. But by that time we had fairly high-level followers who were living in the huge fortress keep and sizeable town that had grown up around Conquest Hall, and they avenged us before Acererak had a chance to reset all the traps that killed our primary characters. And there was much rejoicing across all the land...

@zenith1102 ай бұрын
I like the idea of bastions for their own sake, but the way it's pitched it seems like it should have been in the PHB. Currently, a player seeking to have access to it would need the DMG purely for one chapter if they weren't interested in DMing. I can see many arguments for _and against_ keeping it in the DMG, but this video frames it as a player tool so it's a little odd considering that.
@envytee96592 ай бұрын
They explained before that the reason its in the DMG is because, even though it is a player-controlled system, it's an optional system that the DM has to opt into, before players can gain access to it.

@@envytee9659 That may be, but people may forget that prior to the changes for the 2024 books, Feats and Multiclassing were also optional in the 2014 book and also required a DM's approval - even though many people weren't aware of that fact. It a question of space constraints. Would it be more practical to have the magic crafting rules and all magic items on the PHB? I mean, PCs are the ones who will use them and create them. Only now you have to cram a 50+ page chapter into an already hefty book.

@stevewilson7295Ай бұрын
Hmm, been doing this since about '82? This is good, but, seems like that a lot more would be tied to monetary rather than level, although level should definitely play a role (In 1st ed, that's what a Lord did). But, It might also be a little confining. If a character has the cash and can build a tower say, if they select to do a Tower or whatever at level 5, they should be able to build one every time they have enough to do it. But if it a "new" thing (a tavern, for instance) they would have to wait until the next level that allows them access to build a new type of thing. Also, might run bastion "turns" a bit different. If you issue an order, it runs until that task is done, but can issue another type of order to another thing, it can run simultaneously, but might have a different length to finish. Just me, and I get that would add to complexity. On the whole though, nice concept, and nice codifying of a system for this, but glad you mentioned that DM's could modify (and should) according to their situation, players, and campaign). Nice job!

Experience has proved that having a 2000 pages rule book full of optional rules is not the best way to get players into the game. So optional rules go into the DMGs because the DM's back has already been broken for long. WotC could instead provide them in a separate setting book like TSR did with birthright, but again experience proved it not to be a viable avenue. They could do like MCDM and do it through a crowdfunding venture except they can't. WotC is tied commercially to brick and mortar shops and also, doing anything that remotely look like side tracking them would immediatly see the rise of forks and torchs (just read comments in your threads, damned if they do, damned if they dont).

I do not see any options for a multiclass characters. I have a 11th level Waterdeep noble half Drow(not available in 2024 I know) Bronze draconic sorcerer Arcane Archer 8/3. Could I hire an high level martial hireling to meet the prerequisite to get a barracks? Would the noble background give me a noble manor?(brownstone in Waterdeep for me). I really love Waterdeep. Could I incorporate Waterdeep City Watch and The Watchful Order of Magists and Protectors?

"off limits for the dungeon master?". I think i understand what they were trying to say but phrasing it like that makes it seem player vs. dungeon master. That's not a very useful framing of the concept. Please don't undermine dungeon masters that way.

Can't wait to play a cleric of Bane and have my enslaved kobold tribe build me an underground hold

I have a feeling it's going to be very dependent on the playgroup. I tried out the playtest version but still felt like just an extra bookkeeping for the DM and didn't look like my players are taking enough responsibility.

Is it fully compatible with 5e 2014?

Instead of being a murder hobo, a player can now be a murder homeowner.

Also Bastions were a 5e thing in Acquisitions incorporated. You could have had a business running and just rename it "Bastion"
