They do have the "custom lineage" race now, which arguably better, and certainly more versatile than Vuman.
@sk8rdman3 жыл бұрын
@@TheMorbidHobo And that in itself is enough reason why I don't think DMs should simply allow a player to choose "custom lineage" as their race. Instead, those rules should be reserved for DMs to use as baseline features when creating a custom race that exists in their campaign setting.
@TheMorbidHobo3 жыл бұрын
@@sk8rdman Eh, it works fine. Not very imaginative, but if a person isn't set on a race, and they just want something versatile, I'd rather have a custom lineage character than anouther vuman or half-elf. Of course, I run a casual campaign in a very open setting. If you have a specific setting in mind with race restrictions, it wouldn't really work there, no.
@sk8rdman3 жыл бұрын
@@TheMorbidHobo I guess that can work for a certain playstyle, but I can't help but wonder: if you let them choose custom lineage as their race, then what the heck is the character's actual race in-world? Do you just let them pretend to be an existing race like dwarf or elf, but using the custom lineage rules instead of the default ones? Do you let them just make up their own new race like a dog-man or something? Personally, I really dislike the custom lineage rules for either of these cases. All the custom lineage rules really do in practice is allow min-maxers and munchkins to gain the character optimizing benefits of playing a variant human, without having to actually play a variant human. If that's what you're after, then what's the point in having any rules for races at all?
@TheMorbidHobo3 жыл бұрын
@@sk8rdman "Do you let them just make up their own new race like a dog-man or something?" Yeah. As said, my setting is very, very freeform. Custom lineage really isn't the place for min-maxing as there are less +1s than a race that would fit a given class perfectly. Also if you're running a game with friends where the point of it is to enjoy playing, min-maxing is a nonissue most of the time, and if it is an issue for a certain character, you can talk to that player. Also yes, if I had to have a min-max player in my group, and they for whatever reason were going with a versatile race instead of a specialized one (probably for the feat), yes, I would rather them use a variety of different looking character than have them be a vuman with every single one of them.

Who says they have to be bitter enemies ? They aren't enemies in my world . In my world there is a forested mountain where there's a kingdom of wood elves that live below and on the side of the mountain in tree houses and a dwarven kingdom within the mountain with roads going from the dwarven kingdom through the wood elves kingdom providing trade goods to each other and mutual protection to each other from enemies . There are some dwarves that live among the wood elves and some wood elves living among the dwarves . Some wood elves are miners providing raw ore and gemstones and some dwarves woodsmen providing wood and game to their kingdom . It all depends on how you view the world you run and play in

what race should we play?? exactly what we want to :) Going against race/class can be fun, but minmaxing can also be fun. my newest PC as my last one got PK is a Mark of healing Halfling, and he is a Wizard Necromancer. SO a Necromancer that can heal, and originates from a healers guild. :D and my backup is a Loxodon Druid. :) also you are mixing up Dragonborn and Half-Dragons (also in the pictures) Dragonborn are not descendants from dragons, but where first made with magic turning dragon eggs into dragonborn as slaves for the dragons. This is also explained in the Dragonlance books. Half-dragons are the offspring of a dragon and another species, and it does not have to be humans.

I blame the influence of MMOs and CRPGs for this unnecessary race-option explosion. I almost always go Human. Sometimes I get crazy with one of the other basic Tolkien-inspired races. I cringe every time a new flavor-of-the-month anthropomorphic animal race is released. Unless the campaign is specifically designed to center around or include a large demographic of some other race, then making that oddball race just forces the other characters, the DM, all NPCs every time you meet a new one, and the world in general either react to or ignore your race. It's a lot of extra work for the rest of the table to properly accommodate your unique race selection. Everybody wants to be the unique one, so then table has to decide how it is that a party of an Owlin, a Tortle, a Tiefling, an Aasimar, a Drow and Goliath besties walk into a bar. The DM has to decide and then RP every unique NPCs feelings about your specific race and then react to that accordingly. Every time your purple-skinned orange-eyes tiefling throws back his hood on a rando NPC for the 'look-at-me-I'm-unique' shock value the DM has to play it out one more time. Eventually your character's unique race just ends up being ignored because it takes up less time and energy that way. In my real life experience, nearly everyone who picks some exotic race eventually ends up RPing as if they were just a human with human psychology and motivations, just with an owl head, horns, or some hardly-worth-it advantage from a race feature. So what's the point?
