I think we have to colonise the moon first before mars, because it doesn't really need that much delta v for ships to leave the moon,making construction easier and cheaper because we don't need that much fuel and i think intercepting mars with a hohmann transfer would be easier as well. And i think we are still a few decades away from completing terraforming. But outposts and stuff like that would work. I still think we can live off artificial gravity created by rotation.

Anyone who thinks terraforming Mars will work...needs to remember that Mars is the way it is, because of specific conditions inherent to Mars itself. Unless you can change those conditions...terraforming it will be a constant struggle against Mars' own natural state. Since we can't increase Mars' mass...anything we do to the atmosphere, will eventually be undone by the exact same process that caused it to lose it's atmosphere in the first place. You might as well try and develop the technology to cause a river to run uphill.

You have to constantly produce gas to maintain the atmosphere. I'm not sure how much, but I'm sure we could do it with a pretty simple automated process to create co2 and oxygen. Nitrogen would be another problem since mars doesn't have enough.

Much better solution is to colonize Venus - build vast cloud cities 30 - 40 kms above the surface where theres earthlike gravitation and atmospheric pressure, 70 °C (hot, but not deal-breaker), and lot of shielding from radiation. Then have those cities slowly reduce the amount of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere to make it colder and breathable. And maybe if we manage to come up with a way to thin the atmosphere, one day we could actually live at its surface.

+Sniffr0st I believe it's Fahrenheit not Celsius, we'd be dead at 70 Celcius. All our enzymes would die which makes all chemical processes in our body incredibly slow, thus killing us. NASA wouldn't invest time for colonizing a planet that no matter what would kill you. But Venus is a far better solution than Mars.

Paul Cappaert Shitty thing is...how do you create CO2 and Oxygen from nothing? You'd have to import them, or substances that contain them, in massive quantities...there's not enough water on Mars to use what's there. For a small habitat...it's doable. But for the whole planet...it's insane.

Mark my words: if you attempt to go to Mars without having a strong base on Earth's moon, the endeavour will fail and everyone involved will die. It's not a hypothesis, it's a guarantee. And even after you establish a base on the Moon, you must go to the Moons of Mars (Phobos and Deimos) before you go to Mars itself. We can't afford to be naive about this. If we take baby steps, we will make it. Giant leaps will doom us.

The problem with us colonizing another planet is that we take our problems with us. Except that, if the US would lower it's defence budget it would fall. Their economy would be destroyed because it pretty much relies on their military industrial complex to pump money in their economy. And it does not matter how powerfull or great your empire is, an economic disaster can destroy any empire. Everyone from the British empire to the Romans will fall because their economies where shrinking or their resources where drying up. The Romans used slaves at first, but when that became illegal their empiee started to crumble slowly and it resulted in its ultimate fall. And the british had just lost lots and lots of their soldiers and equipment so they became overextended and they lost it all. Now if you wpuld ferry over 10 Billion it would get distributed to a lot less people in the process, costing a lot of jobs so it could start the fall of the US.

Because that would be crazy. even if you could find a way to move Venus out of it's own orbit and into a Collision with Mars, a monumental project BTW, you would have to deal with how that would affect every other body b in the solar system. Frankly if we had the wherewithal to do that, we could fix the problems we have here, and we already know this planet is habitable...the question is, for how long?

+Shawn Wales Well first of all, its Mercury into Mars, Not Venus into Mars, Venus into Mars wouldn't even be funny to think about because its already about the size of earth and has way to much carbon dioxide and other green house gases, so you would have a huge planet that would take a hellava long time to settle. But Mercury into mars is feasible if you take it slow, because mercury is basically one giant melted metal ball floating in space, and that's exactly what mars needs, so if you slowly add the too, and nuke and asteroids that come off the collision and are going for earth, then you've got a planet maybe a tiny bit smaller or bigger than earth, with all the benefits of both

The body can't actually sustain itself in zero gravity, it needs the pressure given to us by Earth's gravity to regualte the endocrine and blood system. This is why Astronauts start pissing bloodas soon as they get into zero G.

Philipp F. I never understand why people say Mars doesn't have enough gravity to hold an atmosphere. Venus has 2% less gravity than Earth but holds onto an atmosphere 90x greater than Earth's. Mars can easily hold onto an atmosphere. The issue is the solar wind. you either have to replace lost atmosphere more quickly than the solar wind removes it, or find a way to protect it from the solar wind

Phobos is less than 1% the mass of Mars, in fact I think Olympus Mons is actually significantly larger than the entire moon. Not enough to change the escape velocity meaningfully.

Each planet will have is independent governance or governances. Like Star Wars. But there will not be any interplanetary alliance and I do hope planets remain self sufficient. Let's just stop invading places to extract resources from them and learn to live in a mutually respectful way with the planets we inhabit... Living small lives, integrated fully with the nature around us isn't as horrific as most people think.

What I didn't see too much in the discussion yet is, that moon lack of an athmosphere might be a unique feature. Where on earth you have to lift a rocket up first before accerlerating "sideways" on moon you could do this with a ground based facility. Basically there might be ways to drastically reduce fuel requirements by using some ground based "rail gun like" system to get payloads up to a certain velocity - basically only needing a small amount of fuel afterwards for circularisation. In a way this means that, where on earth it's difficult to get up to orbit, and a little easier to get back down (aerobreaking), on the moon it might be really easy to get up into orbit and at least easier to get down because of the low gravity. A munar colony might a actually be a much larger step in colonizing the solar system than we realize currently.

A moonbase would be a very good idea. The moon is easy to get to, communications delay is minimal and water has now been found there. It's a perfect place to get a small outpost up and running before building one on Mars.

Wouldn't any atmosphere we build up on Mars just be eroded away by solar winds since there's no spinning magnetic core to generate a shield like we have here on earth?

If we put lot of geothermal & nuclear power plant over time the planet will start to get warmer, which would lead to for the core to heat up? Remeber the hotter the planet get more co2 well be released from the planet which will speed up the process more creating magnetic filed. The planet from their own should be abel to take more heat from the sun.

No one is colonizing the moon in 2022 but the moon just seems so much wiser. We can send supplies, rescues, space stations along the way. Space station in lunar orbit, they're close enough to talk to family back home. The moon just makes a tonne of sense. Even the names for future lunar citizens are cool. Lunartics or Mooners. I say moon first!

I think a moon colony first makes *huge* sense! Water has now been found there (at least at the lunar south pole) so that makes a colony possible. There is almost no comms delay between earth and the moon so that's a good thing. If something goes badly wrong, travel time between moon and earth (either way) is only 2-3 days or so. If people are determined to set up a Mars colony soon then that's fine and I wish them good luck, but a moon colony makes a lot of sense!

Haven't even watched the video yet, and just based on the title I have to say: YES!! We need to be practical before we fire ourselves off to the next planet over. Let's set up a staging area on the Moon, so that we can master leaving earth and making successful dockings/landings. We can also set up a refueling station with a place to prepare for longer distance flights, by stockpiling necessities like food and equipment. The moon has lots of WATER, which can provide us with both oxygen and fuel (hydrogen gas) and obviously water itself. We've got pretty great rover's on Mars already. Patience!! We'll get there!!

Hey Trace, do you think it is possible for a "the 100 tv show event" happen? I'll explain, the tv show is a bunch of people in a space station for 100yrs after a nuclear war on the land. The ground is still radioactive but they adapted because of space radiation. If that happened in real life, would we adapt to space that quickly

I think if you're curious about the sociopolitical climate of space colonization, you should look at what the writers of Japan's famous "Mobile Suit Gundam" have to say on the subject. It's a very interesting story they tell.

I have looked at a lot of videos about colonizing the moon. And I haven't found any with my same ideas. I think we should set up a moon colony on earth. We should have inflatable domes, which we cover with 3D printers with simulated moon mortar. The domes should be connected to each other by inflatable tunnels covered with simulated moon mortar. There should be living quarters, hydroponic green houses, gardens with garden soil for recreational gardening, a 5 acre pasture with one inch of garden soil and one inch of grass turf, a park with artificial turf and with small sections of real grass turf, and maybe even a very small zoo. All the domes will have plastic floors so no water is lost. Condensation forming on the ceilings will be drained into the water supply. All the domes will be blown up with compressed air from earth and will have a refresh system, which will refresh the air and maintain the air pressure. Humidity, Temperature will be maintained by humidifiers, heaters, fans and coolers. Light will be provided by multi-color LEDs, mostly white. Power will be supplied at first by solar power, and later by nuclear or fusion power. There will be a bull, a cow, two sheep, and two goats, two chickens, two turkeys, two fish, and two rabbits. There will also be pets, two dogs, two cats, two bunnies, etc. (and maybe a small zoo) All of this will be set up by astronauts and robots before the colonist arrive. The first colonist will be 5 fathers and 5 mothers, and 90 babies. The parents will be good parents, gardeners, farmers, zoo keepers, teachers, etc.. During the first two years an exact duplicate facility will be built on the moon. When the babies are two years old, they will move to the moon and live on the moon. Or if it is proven that they will be too young to travel to the moon than the facility on earth will be added to, to accommodate 10 more parents and 90 more babies. The two year olds would move into the new addition. Every two years the facility will be either added to, or 100 people will move to the moon. This plan will allow the kids to grow up in the isolation of the colony, and will make it easier for them to live in the isolation of the colony on the moon. And will allow them to grow up on the moon and be better able to adjust to the lower gravity on the moon, although some artificial gravity maybe eventually provided. This artificial gravity will especially be good for the parents. The kids will have everything in the facility to keep them occupied and entertained. Also they could have some books, movies, games, etc., especially adapted for them, being careful not give them anything that would make them feel isolated. After 20 years there could be 2000 people living on the moon, most of whom grew up on the moon. This program could be speeded up so in 20 years there could be 4000, 6000, or 8000 people living on the moon. This program could be simultaneously done to colonize Mars so we could have 2000 people on the Moon and Mars at the same time. For the moon we could send supplies every month, but for Mars we could only send supplies every 26 months. So I suggest we send 10, 20, or 30 rockets to Mars every 26 months all at the same time. We could have several refueling stations along the way to mars and orbiting mars so rockets could refuel along the way to mars and right before landing on mars so the empty rocket would have enough fuel to take off again, refuel in space and return to Earth. Eventually the moon and Mars could export minerals or small expensive items that were assembled on the moon or Mars, like jewelry, iphones, iwatches, etc. Or grown on the moon like caviar, marijuana, etc.

Though this video was made a year ago, it's amazing to realize that everyone is heading to the moon. NASA, SpaceX, Bigelow, ESA, Roscosmos, and China are all planning for the moon. Goverment and commercial ventures on the moon and around the moon await.

Here's how you terraform mars without all the complex problems. build an array of magnets at the north and south pole big enough to generate a planetary field, then build giant solar battery arrays to power them. now you got your magnetic field. then proceed with the next phase and build a bunch of atmosphere generators across the planet that release ozone, oxygen, and carbon dioxide so it builds up the atmosphere and thickens. once thats completed you can tear down those generators for parts as after that phase they become useless. then go build facilities designed to help speed up the process for re-fertilizing the soil and make the dirt healthy again for growing. after that its a matter of just letting humans do what they do best and build new homes for people to live there and bring a bunch of people over. obviously this will take some time to do but in the end it has a high percentage of success and could be done in a relatively reasonable time. I love talking about space stuff and it is exciting to engage with others and make space plans together because if we are going to leave this rock in the future, we are going to do it together so lets brainstorm. tell me what you think and if there are areas where we can improve and make it happen faster no matter how small, dont hesitate to say it.

Colonizing the moon has been an idea far longer than the year 2000, mobile suit Gundam was made like 40 years ago, and Tomino who created the series used a lot of ideas borrowed from American physicist Gerrard O'neill. Luna City and Von Braun are possible. And also making the O'neill cylinder style colonies would be easier to make if we had colony's already outside Earths atmosphere. And if you want to dismiss any of this, feel free but remember that we now have lots of things originally introduced in Star Trek. Food for thought.

To colonise mars I recommend 2x 600kT magnets north and south Pole and the magnets would act like a shield with added Electric pulsed through to the magnets and would protect the Mars atmosphere without the sun stripping the Mars atmosphere . add solar panels to the idea then you would get a shield.

I've got an idea; feel free to add or take away any part. So, I watched grant Thompson's Arc furnace video a while ago and it got me thinking: couldn't we do that to mars? Okay, so we send gigantic metal rods to mars and we dig them into the poles and into core and turn mars into a giant arc furnace to melt the core. That would start up mars' magnetic field and hopefully heat up the planet. With a magnetic field, we can start building the atmosphere back up and start building factories and such to keep up the warming affect. And that's all I have. Please give me feedback :)

An extremely good science fiction trilogy on terraforming mars (Red Mars, Green Mars , Blue Mars by Kim Stanley Robinson) is full of great ideas and with science that we already have. And quite a lot of the science and ideas could be applicable to the moon as well, and I think the moon is where we should start. If we can live safely there, Mars would be easier in so many ways.
