Such a great game. It's even better when you take into account the history of Tennessee vs. Alabama football. It's a bitter rivalry that's played every year in the 3rd weekend of October. For the last 15 years, Alabama has dominated both the entire college football landscape and Tennessee. Often times winning on miraculous plays. Tennessee put together a really good team this year, and headed into this game undefeated for the first time in a long time. The stakes were as high as they get for a mid-season college football game, with both teams trying to win the SEC and make it to the college football playoff. This is easily the best game I've ever watched for all of those reasons. Pure release from the fanbase to finally get a win against the greatest college football dynasty of all time in Alabama. Go vols!

To answer your question about typical scores in college football, it depends on the conference. There are dozens of conferences with very loose regional correlations, and within each conference the teams tend to play similar styles of football. Some conferences are known for frequent high scores, and others are known for a slower pace of game. So when you hear someone say “This is a real Big 10 style of game” or “We have a classic SEC matchup here,” they’re referencing the different styles each conference is known for.
@sikksotoo Жыл бұрын
Great job on the reaction; correct on the 2 point conversion and the time out indicators. A #3 playing at #6 is typically a great matchup. Alabama is 187-21 in games since 2008. Any time they lose is a big deal.

Nuts is in common usage in America, as well. The rule around forward progress is you get credited for however far you made it before being PUSHED back by the opposing team. So if they get past the first down marker and are pushed back behind it, it is still a first down. However, if you, under your own power, choose to run backwards, you lose the forward progress. So occasionally you will see a wide receiver catch a ball and it will be good for a first down but then while trying to maneuver around a defender they go backwards and get tackled and then it isn’t a first down anymore. Then, you will see the coach on the sideline go berserk - especially if it’s 3rd or 4th down.

There is a rule called forward progress, where if the defense is pushing you back the ball is placed the furthest you were able to get for the next play
@jiggly5744 Жыл бұрын
Just to clarify, at 7:33 when you were talking about him getting back behind the first down marker, the rule is that once a ball carriers momentum has stopped and forward progress has deemed stopped by the officials, the play is then called dead and any push back after that dose not matter. I believe that this rule was put in place in order to help prevent injuries. Great reaction and video! I remember watching this game live, it was one of the better college games of last season!

Also when you said the term "nuts" is an English word for crazy, I think you were being sarcastic but I''m not 100% sure. The sports writers vote, the coaches vote, a computer program picks, and they get averaged together to give you the top 25 rated teams in college football. This happens every week officially starting on week 8 and goes till the end of year were in rankings basically turn to seeding for playoff!

You boys have come a long way in your understanding of football. It seems like even if you're confused, between the 2 of you , you can reason it out. Most of the time you're correct now. Sometimes these replays can confuse people because they skip a lot of plays, like punts or kickoffs with short or no returns, or plays that are short gains on 1st or 2nd down. Full game watching helps the most. Announcers in-game are very helpful when you can hear everything they say. Quintessentially, the shenanigans are nuts.

13:19 yes the #3 and #6 team are generally really close in skill, some years more than others. It's usually safe to assume that anyone in the top 25 has the potential to beat anyone (but top 15 has a more realistic shot, pretty rare for teams ranked 25+ to beat top 5)
@zagger999 Жыл бұрын
You do usually see higher-scoring, more offensive games at the collegiate level with how the clock runs and rules differentiate slightly. It's not unusual to see competitive games be in the high 30s to low to mid-40s and beyond sometimes. As with the rankings, its realistic that a game between the 3rd best team and 6th best team in the country ranked out of a 130 teams should be close. Sometimes that simply not how it goes and it can be a complete stomp, which is quite often the case when Alabama is involved. There were often times this season when the #1 team in the country Georgia this year would beat their opponent severely no matter who they were or where they were ranked.

Here's what you need to know about this game: It's called The Third Saturday in October. It has been played 105 times as of August 2024. This is the American college football equivalent of Manchester United and Arsenal. General Neyland, one of the greatest coaches in Tennessee and college football once said "you never know what a football player is made of until he plays Alabama." Paul "Bear" Bryant, historical coach of Alabama in his own right, once said of Neyland "he taught me everything I know." Bryant lost to Neyland in all 7 matchups, but Neyland retired before they could compete head to head at Tennessee and Alabama. Before Nick Saban arrived at Alabama in 2007, the series was 44 - 38 - 7 in favor of Alabama. The two programs were headed in opposite directions. Alabama, coming off a series of losing seasons under Mike Shula - and one 10-win season that was vacated - was about to start a dynasty unlike any ever seen in any sport. Tennessee, on the other hand, was destined to wander the proverbial desert, having 5 head coaches in 13 years, 3 of whom left with overall losing records, falling far from its history of success. Saban would rattle off 15 consecutive wins that included a last minute blocked field goal in 2009 and a 5-point Alabama win in the waning minutes of the 2015 matchup. This rivalry has spanned over a century, multiple sports, high school recruiting, players transferring from one team to the other, court rooms, message boards, neighborhoods, and families. The battle lines have not simply been drawn, they have been etched into the very earth on which the South resides. What you saw here was more than just a close and exciting game. You saw a decade and a half of pent up rage, disappointment, and exhaustion reach an absolute boiling point that found itself most appropriately expressed by a goal post floating down the Tennessee River. GBO

To clarify the punt at 6:16 - when a team punts, only the receiving team can catch the ball and run with it. If the kicking team touches it first, the ball is dead and the receiving team gets it where the kicking team touched it. BUT, if the receiving team touches the ball without managing to pick it up/catch it, it's a free ball. Anyone can get it. The first Alabama player got out of the way because there were so many Tennessee players close to him. He was worried about dropping the ball so he was going to let Tennessee touch it and Alabama would get it where it was touched. He was sacrificing a few yards by letting the ball roll for the security of not having to make the catch with someone in his face. This is very common. Unfortunately, the second Alabama player came in to pick it up, not realizing a Tennessee player was behind him. The Tennessee player hit him as he touched the ball, he dropped it, and it became a free ball that Tennessee recovered. Thus, Tennessee got the ball back. It should also be noted that if the ball touches ANY part of the body, it becomes a free ball. That's why the first Alabama player made such a drastic move to get away from it. There have been many instances of the ball bouncing in a weird way and grazing someone's leg as he's trying to get away from it, making it a free ball.

In College and High School Football, the receiver only has to have one foot inbounds after solid possession and control of the ball. In the NFL professional league, the ball catcher has to have possession and control of the ball, then plant two feet inbounds and maintain control of the ball through the fall to the ground. If possession is interrupted, they have to re-establish two feet inbounds again. If they are falling to the ground, then any other body part equals two feet. If you are in a scrum moving forward, then hands and feet are permitted to touch the field, but any other body part ends the play immediately.

Hey, love the channel. You guys are picking it up fast. I'm American and I played played 10 years of football but started playing rugby at age 16. I had a scholarship to play rugby, but I remember how tough it was to pick up the rules when I started playing. So, I can relate to what you're doing... just in reverse. You're picking it up quick, so, good on you. One rule I haven't seen addressed in your other videos or comments or even the football 101 video is forward progress. And I think it's given you some confusion even tho you haven't recognized it. If the ball carrier is pushed backwards, they get credit for their "forward progress". That is to say, the ball gets placed at where they started going backwards. Unlike rugby where you go to the ground is where you're down. So, if you get past the first down, but then somebody pushes you backwards a few yards and you're tackled short of the first down, you get credit for where you were when contact was made. So, first down.

We have a number of different polls every year, the most important is the College Football Playoff poll, who determines which teams make the tournament at the end of the season to win the championship. Any teams within 4-5 of each other are considered nearly even, especially because this game was in Tennessee.

I was at this game. Y’all wouldn’t believe what it was like there. Go VOLS

You were asking "did they get him back?" when the runner had gotten the first down and was being pushed back, keep in mind it doesn't matter if he gets pushed back once he's gotten the first down. He still gets the first down. That is called "forward progress". Now, if he gets the first and runs back behind the first down marker on his own, and then gets tackled behind the first down marker, it isn't a first down, because he ran back on his own.

Pass interference is similar to a foul in soccer. Defenders can’t grab, shove, or impede with a WR. They essentially have to run with the receiver and try to knock the ball away. It’s one of the harder positions to play in football, you will generally see the fastest, best athletes on the field playing wide receiver or defensive back.

7:35 you asked "did they get him back?" in football there is "forward progress" where a football is placed as far as an offensive player gets. if a player is shoved back by the defense they still retain the maximum distance they got. but if the player with the ball goes backwards on his own then is tackled they lose those yards.

Amigos, the comments are right. You stopped too soon. The celebration where the goal posts are carted out of the stadium is epic. Shades of 1998 and beating Florida for this old Volunteer.

Autumn is an all-around magical time of year in the US, certainly in the North/Southeast and Midwest. Parts of that are the cool temps, the comfort food, the foliage, the long drives, the shorter days--and definitely the college football in the backdrop of all that other stuff. If y'all ever make it this side of the pond at that time of year, even with a smaller ranked college team matchup (I think it's hard to get tix to the big games in Alabama, Michigan, Ohio, etc.,) you'd get that experience. Bring your appetites, your jumpers (sweaters), warm socks, your hiking boots, and open minds. I have a feeling you'd get a real kick out of it all. Good luck!

The kick for a point after a touchdown is called the "extra point". Trying to run or pass after a touchdown is called a "two point conversion". A kick on any other play for 3 points is called a "field goal". ....The main 5 guys who do only blocking on the offense are called offensive linemen. Their positions are the center (who "snaps" the ball to the quarterback on every play), the 2 offensive guards (on each side of the center), and the 2 offensive tackles beside the guards.

I saw your reaction to the 2023 college football hype video and wanted to give some insight as to why it’s a greater spectacle than the nfl. 1. More locality for a more personal fan connection. Colleges are everywhere (130 FBS programs), but only 22/50 states have an NFL team. 2. Fanbases are often comprised of both local fans and former students who have more pride for their university and its unique traditions. Keep in mind that the larger universities can have greater than 35,000 undergrads. 3. It serves as a representation for the school, the TV exposure from a good football team can entice students to apply their and also brings in $ which is why there is also so much “theater”.

I can’t believe y’all are watching this game. Breaks my heart. This was an offense show. Another great game to watch, a defensive struggle, is Alabama v LSU 2011. Totally different than this one. ROLL TIDE!

There is a rule called forward progress. If a ball carrier’s progress is stopped then the refs will blow the whistle and the ball is spotted there, even if the carrier hasn’t been brought down or is then pushed back. If the runner chooses to run backwards though and is tackled, the ball is spotted where they were tackled.

@@DNReacts the TN & AL are bitter rivals. It draws a lot of attention nationally. TN & most of the Southern teams are in the SEC (South Eastern Conference). The best teams & the best conference, Our conference (SEC) will most likely play for the National Championship. Most of the stadiums in the SEC are very big. TN holds 102,900 & AL has around 102,000 also. Recruiting is a major thing in college football. If a player is good. He will be recruited sometimes at the junior high school level. Just enjoying your channel so much...Go Big Orange!!! Please react to the Ohio State marching band. Start with the Hollywood Blockbusters....

Great game! I went to the University of Central Florida in Orlando, Florida, which is one of the largest colleges by enrollment at 70,000+!!! I mention us because we were a small school in 2000 when we played the powerhouse Alabama and beat them in Tuscaloosa!!! It may never happen again for a while! Go Knights! Charge On!!! #GKCO
