Anthony Edwards was the best player on the floor in a game that featured Nikola Jokic, In Jokic's home building. Jamal Murray looked no better in game 1 than he did in round 1 against the LA Lakers. And Karl-Anthony Towns helped open up a big lead to start the game. But perhaps the biggest story was that the Nuggets got outplayed in the clutch.
The DNVR Nuggets podcast team discusses all of their takeaways in the postgame show.

@Darrinwilliamsmedia I mean I'm not saying he gotta run point or anything ... but rather than having a hobbled Jamal, AG, Justin holiday and honestly even jokic chuck up 3s, I'd prefer Mike take a few extra shots. I think he's got a better chance at making a contested shot than any of those guys do. Like jokic went 2 for 9 from 3 in game 1. That's ridiculous. Like jokic fell right into the wolves game plan of making him a shooter. We have always seen that if jokic isn't getting his shot then he should be a facilitator ... more so than usual ...so while 9 assists is nice ... that's kind of his norm. What isn't his norm is 9 attempts from 3. So he gotta work on getting the ball out to actual shooters than just shooting himself. He def needs to shoot the 3 if he's wide open cuz he's still an elite player but i think Mike should be taking more like 10 attempts from 3...not 7. And Mike should have like 16 attempts overall per game. He could easily be scoring 25-30 ppg if they fed the ball to him rather than him having to personally work to even get the ball. Lmao God knows Reggie Jackson is allergic to passing Mike the ball for some reason.

I've said Denver's biggest issue is JM. Even if they repeat this year, which is very unlikely if they keep playing as they have during the playoffs. Going next year, Jokic will be one year older and be very tired from the long season and the Olympic games. Don't know what JM will do, injury or not. I honestly believe that the two man game shouldn't be the bread and butter of our offense but more as a secret weapon that we can use down the stretch. If Jokic played the first quarter aggressive scoring ten points and getting the bigs in foul trouble than the game would open up for his teammates to attack the rim more and gain confidence. Jokic's is on another galaxy compared to Shaq but sometimes I wish he did like Shaq in terms of being more relentless in putting the centres in foul trouble by dominating in the post.

It is what it is. Murray's injury is hurting the Nuggets. Minnesota is stacked and probably wins the series. In the off season you got to make some moves. You need a point guard that can stay healthy and a backup center. A little more depth. The NBA is super talented league. Winning a title is extremely difficult. Gotta be constantly improving your team because with international players the league is continually improving.

McDaniels (Min) 10. Gordon (Den) 11. Walker (Min) 12. Kcp (Den) An injured Jamal is as good as Mike Conley. Most of the best players in the series are in Minnesota. Thats why they are the better team than Denver. Minnesota has multiple players that can guard Jokic. Denver has no one to guard Ant because Kcp is too small. That's why Bruce Brown was needed last year. He guarded ant, Jimmy Butler and similar wings.

We got outplayed straight up. We’re still missing wide open shots, consistent with the entire playoffs. AG got shut down, that alley oop play with Jokic in not available. Murray is inconsistent and clearly injured. Reggie has one good quarter in him. MPJ is solid. KCP is reliable as always but injured. CB is non existent compared to last year - his confidence seems to be gone, Watson is quiet. The Wolves on the other hand are what the Nuggets were a year ago. One dominant guy, and very solid players all the way to the 6th man who keep showing up, as well as a bench that can get streaky from 3. The Wolves are taking it all if they get past Denver imo, and they will if the Nuggets don’t collectively start getting better (Murray especially).

Wind is the only one calling the issue what it is, Mike Conley is the weak spot in Wolves defense. Jamal has both size and age advantage. If he cannon exploit that weakness, Nuggets are done. You cannot expect Jokic to have a 35 ppg TDs on 60% against Rudy, KAT AND Naz Reid. Yesterday Edwards was amazing but he had three teammates in double figures scoring over 55%. Jokic had none. And Gordon, this is the second in the last three games that he had 3 rebounds. He is like top 3 most athletic guys on the floor in any game. That ain't going to cut it.

This might be Minnesota’s year like it was Denver’s last year. Making timely shots when most needed. Also, one playoffs doesn’t take away from Jamal Murray, but people wanted him to be an all star after the finals run and this season when the ASG was coming up, he didn’t make it and a decent amount of people didn’t think he was a snub. I think that this offeseason we need three type of players. - a legit athletic centre as backup that can play in the pick n roll and protect the rim. - an athletic point guard that can run the offense while being at least a plus defender (ala Bruce Brown or Taius Jones). - We need Malone to speed up the development of the young players. He didn't play Watson and Braun enough in the past season. More reps the get and more ready they will be to help in the playoffs. - a borderline all star that can take Murrays spot when Jamal is hurt or out of the lineup.

@@johnbarkley925 I can buy all of that. Problem is…are nuggets fans willing to add more depth at the expense of the starting 5, because due to the cap, they can’t upgrade without, say, trading MPJ to do it. @johnbarkley925

@@RS-ol8or that's an interesting point. As a Nuggets fan what hurts me is that our window isn't open forever and the three teams that seems poised the most to dominate the West in the coming decade are OKC, Minnesota and San Antonio. I almost cannot believe that while we have the best player in the world I think other team's have a brighter future than us. Ock did the perfect rebuild and are the most complete team in my view. They have a superstar that goes for 30 in SGA, a centre that in his prime will be a 22/11 guy on great efficiency and amazing defense ( Chet), a two way beast in Jalen Williams and other great players. For some reason I don't think the Nuggets distribution of roles are perfect. Jokic is the best player in the world and a point forward. Ideally he should be paired with a rim protector and this would make AG expendable. The player we need would do some of the things AG does in terms of cutting, catching lobs but would be a better rebounder and shotblocker. This would bring our ceiling to a totally new level. If you think about it Jokic in terms of playstyle is more similar to Larry bird, LeBron James and magic Johnson rather than Ewing or Robinson. I also think that while kcp is great, he is too one dimensional and limited offensively. I prefer C. Braun because he has the potential to be a taller defender, better at cutter to the rim and switchable than kcp. About Mpj the situation is difficult. Here's why. I too believed last summer that he was the most expendable piece and that he was a bit overrated (he averaged 13pts on 44%fg in last year's playoffs and was our forth or fifth best player after jok, mal, AG and Bruce). The problem is that Mpj has improved MASSIVELY (better all around scorer, defender, rebounder, consistent) and this playoffs he leaped from fifth to becoming the second best player on the team. I don't think that in a trade we could find a similar combination of off ball game, shooting, rebounding and athleticism. But you are right that something has to be done. If we don't win this year it will be the third wasted year of the Jokic era. My suggestion would be to trade Jamal as bad as it sounds. There is a saying that availability is the most important skill and Jamal's absences has caused the team to tank in the playoffs and for Jokic to carry the team in the reg. Season and exhaust himself. I would be willing to trade him for Fox from Sacramento or Scottie Barnes. Even if you argued that his ceiling is a bit better than those two players, I think that their availability would compensate for it. After all Jokic is so great that he doesn't need Jordan on his team but a point guard that can average 23 when needed on respectable efficiency and that can playmake and run the offense.

You perfectly said it. Strange that all of the so called analysts that work for Denver are too blind to notice the glaring errors made by the front office. the 2023 off-season will go down as one of the worst in franchise history. - they kept DJ instead of looking for an Andre Drummond or Dwight Howard type of backup centre that can be a lob threat, rebound and guard the rim for 15 minutes each game. This would save energy for Jokic and Gordon and give them rest before the playoffs begin. - we need a young athletic point guard in place of Reggie. Ideally this point guard would be able to run the offense and defend decently. - as the Jokic championship window isn't open forever I would suggest of trading Jamal and a couple of bench pieces for either Fox or Scottie Barnes. This will be the third year in the Jokic era where the n.2 option is hurt in the playoffs. - in future roster constructions I would advise Booth to consider having a lineup with Jokic as the power forward and a rim protector at centre (ala Clint Capella/ Jalen Duren/ Chet etc.) This would allow us to compete with bigger lineups as the league is moving toward size. Jokic isn't a traditional 5 but more a taller Larry Bird/Kevin McHale hybrid.

This wolves teams is several levels above that Laker team . I have no dog in this fight but Denver should be very concerned . I see wolves in 5/6 judging off of Denver’s play so far in the playoffs and wolves play as well as last night . Denver can’t stop anyone on that team and Jok saved the game from being a blow out . I told someone the other day that Jamal Murray would get exposed because he hasn’t had to play a team of actual defensive guards with length. It’s bearing fruit right now .

Before the playoffs started, everyone agreed that Denver was the NBA's best team (along with Boston). But the Nuggets certainly haven't looked like it yet in any of the 6 games. Either they're not as good as everyone thought, or they simply haven't played up to their potential. Minnesota sure looked like the better team in Game 1, and the next one is an absolute must-win for Denver. If I was a Nuggets fan, I'd be VERY concerned.

After watching a few KZbinrs analyze the game it feels like we got out coached. I mean here and there a few details were off like… Jeff Green would ve dunked that if he was in pwats spot but that is minor. The fact that Minnesota was able to stop us while having good offense. Now do the nuggets have something more to offer or do we just play our game and hope that it goes better, because it doesn’t feel like Minnesota is playing us straight up. Their strategy was made to take out jokic assists + efficiency and beat us. They will make sure that Murray , Gordon and jokic are covered in the pick n roll. A bad shooter in the corner won’t change that. And still I think the nuggets should win this. Respect for Minnesota. They don’t f around.

Denver got no bench! There is no way to win championships with young unproven players to back up the starters! No back up center AGAIN so they can exhaust Jok, Pwat and CB are young and inconsistent, Reggie isnt at that level.. So Denver has 5 starters and that is it! Good luck with that ! Championship team needed to be improved to use that window they got to try make a run but this is just SHIT strategy... You gonna TRY to develop 2 or max 3 players in expense of Championship team?! Denver needs so little to be unbeatable yet they are forcing this development shit! You developed 3 Monsters build on that ! Dont develop again ffs

I know it sounds crazy, but I would try Zeke Nnaji and play Watson more. I'm not sure if the AG as the small ball backup 5 is the answer because that's just taxing to his body and wasting energy when he needs to play minutes alongside Jokic. Zeke Nnaji at least has the size and versatility to keep up with the Wolves size. But more importantly Watson needs more minutes. The impact he has as a weak side help defender and rim protector is huge. And similar to Nnaji, he has the size and versatility to keep up with the bodies Wolves throw at us. Holiday is good, but I rather have a better defender like Watson on the floor who can make Ant's life tougher. Bottom line is we need more size on the court to matchup against the Wolve's size and Murray+Jokic need to play better. 0 points in the 1st half from Murray is unacceptable. 44% from the field and 7 turnovers are also unacceptable from Jokic.

Jokic played bad game. He needs to adjust, he needs to get the ball closer to the rim and work from there and not expand too much energy going through 3 bigs every single possession. Therefore bad game for Murray and Gordon who feed off of Jokic. Nuggets bench needed 5-6 more minutes. Rebounding must be better too! Wolves adjusted and played to limit Nuggets strength while Denver just played regular game and Minnesota requires much more attention and adjustments.

Been trying to tell my fellow Denver fans that the Tims were a dangerous team. dENvEr in 5! was beyond ‘tarded. Wolves have a deeper, better bench. Been saying that all year. Too many Denver fans got delusional. This is beyond Mal being injured . The Tims are better. Booth didn’t give Joker a proper backup to spell him. CB & PWat aren’t doing anything for you. Reggie is sometimes good, sometimes bad. Instead, Booth kept the starting 5 intact, thinking it would beat every other team, but bench play was grossly overlooked. Tim Connolly > Calvin Booth. At least right now. Prove me wrong. After the Timmy’s beat Nuggs hopefully Booth shakes this roster up to do what is right: Deep bench needed. Quality 5 backup for Joker. Quality PG. Trade MPJ - sell while his value is high and get a bag for him. Strawther or Hunter can fit in his place. I love Jokic & my Nuggets, but Booth wasted this year. Not to mention Malone’s rotations & not playing rookies was very poor coaching.
@johnbarkley925
@johnbarkley925 20 күн бұрын
