Hello Ana, thanks so much for your kind feedback! There is not strict time when one should have a cleansing, but people tend to do it when they have a need, an emotional problem, health problem, etc., and they are typically done in a series of 3, spaced out a few days apart.

They are herbal infusions, usually with a water or liquor base. I know that the different plants have different healing properties, and I know that they use different plants for men versus women, and some plants are "sweet", like chamomile, while some are strong, like "ruda" (don't know the English name for that plant).

The traditions of spiritual cleansings, just like many other indigenous traditions, pre-dates the arrival of the Spanish yet lives on today. You may have noticed that the words she was chanting were in Quechua, not Spanish...

Hi Terry, well, not all of them are plump, but many certainly are. I can't say why exactly, just that these wise-women are very well respected in their communities. Perhaps it comes with age and experience? In general though, obesity in Ecuador is much lower than in other countries...
