A grandad of mine used to do this to us when we get sick when we were kids. I remember feeling so relaxed the whole time, I wish the whole process was longer. There were whispers and spitting as well but not as intense as that. I live in the Philippines btw.

Thanks so much for your kind comment 😊 The significance of the spitting, or "blowing" (soplar in Spanish) as they prefer to say, is to blow away the negative energy. As for the chanting, she is saying Quechua cleaning words, which are loosely translated as "take it out", again referring to the bad energy.

I was thinking the same thing, and I think the answer is that they are used to it; Ecuadorian parents often bring their children to the local market for a cleansing, so it is likely that they have had this done many times before and go into it knowing what to expect....
