If you are thinking about getting an African Grey parrot as a family pet, there are a couple important things you need to know:
1 - They are one-person birds, so they may not be nice or kind do everyone in the family.
2 - They bite hard; children may not do well with them.
3 - They tend to pluck, so they need to feel safe, be engaged and in a comfortable, safe environment.

@@ParrotBliss I'm thinking about it! Just doing all my research right now so I can provide them a good home. There is a rescue near me that has an African Grey who is missing a foot, she has really captured my heart. My senior cat is in her last few months of life so she is the priority for now but once she passes I think I'll get a parrot from the rescue.

I think she may be very happy with an African Grey - Different parrots offer different lifestyles. She should consider how affectionate she wants the bird to be, how talkative, diet, sound... a.co/d/iewosmt Link to my book "30 Perfect Apartment Parrots" African Greys are in there, gives great info on what each species is like so that people can find the right bird for them.

Not only will they bite, they'll bite , latch on and they bite deeper. You really have to listen to their cues.

Right? They Really know how to defend themselves- I agree with the cue-reading. It's a warning. I appreciate you posting, validates my experience.

I love African Grey parrots. But, I don’t want a parrot smarter than me😂😂😂. Seriously, I think they need so much attention and enrichment they really can take over your life. I would not even consider getting one. Of all the parrots, they really need a buddy. And, I agree they really hurt!🥰

Yes, I think they are painted as awesome parrots, and they are. However, there's no love when you want to hug and pet one and they just want to bite... Of course, they're not all like- But all four of mine are! They are not cuddle bugs!

A family member has a grey they got as a baby and he is about 25 years old now. He has not been out of his cage since he was a baby bc he nipped at them a few times and they became fearful of him. They change the paper in the bottom of his cage and wash his food dishes, but never clean his cage, which has so much built up dried poop on it that it is just beyond filthy. They rarely give him a new toy bc they say he’s afraid of changes in his cage, and he eats a seed diet, except for a treat now and then. They actually believe this bird is perfectly happy because he doesn’t pluck his feathers. I have asked them repeatedly over the years to rehome him so he can be rehabilitated and maybe learn to fly, which he never got the chance to do, but they won’t do it. I would turn them into our local animal welfare agency but they would know I was the one who reported them and it would cause problems in the family. It just sickens me how they keep that poor bird. The strange thing is that they have dogs and they go to the ends of the earth to provide the dogs with the best of everything, literally treat their dogs like their own children. They both work and will not leave their dog alone. They have a dog sitter come into the home if one of them can’t be with the dog at all times, but that poor bird is completely ignored. Its so sad. Sorry, I just needed to vent bc this bird is dying a slow death from neglect.

How sad! Can you ask to have the AG come and stay or visit you? If it worked, you could do it more and more often, starting to help him.

Question regarding the bite... you mentioned no other bird lunged at you like the greys... are the others really that nice? lol. From what I have heard, many lovebirds also lunge at people as well, and that's what my female lovie does. It's painful when she does that, and I can imagine when the grey's beak is 5 times larger! So what I'm curious about is, I think only greys and lovebirds are the worse biters? I would also guess that Macaws are bad that way too 😆 😅🥰

@Parrot Bliss yeah, he has to get it just right, though, as they are big for a greys beak. It takes him a minute to make a good opening, and then he rips it apart with ease.
