they slightly touched on rough patches but i really wish they had talked about the years that they may have been long distance, most importantly staying together through college. long distance can truly make or break a relationship and as someone who is about to be in a long distance relationship with my highschool sweetheart, i would’ve liked to hear these couples’ thoughts on those busy and separate years
@jinkleborg2 жыл бұрын
i'm currently long distance with my highschool sweetheart and honestly in my mind i never really had enough time with him. we'd be in school together but we'd never have the same classes, only this one shared study hall. he'd walk me to some of my classes but still it was always fleeting. and his parents were too strict to ever really allow him out of the house, so we rarely hung out outside of school. now he's off to university while i start my last year in highschool. the issue for us, and neither of us ever really fight, is that we miss eachother desperately and we are traversing through a growing relationship with growing people without ever getting to see eachother. the only thing we can really do is hope for the next time we meet with bated breath, you know?

Hearing everyone talk about the rough patches is helpful. Particularly the one woman, Saskia, speaking about how she felt it could've been easier on her partner if they broke up because of her mental health struggles. I'm actually with my high school sweetheart, almost 4 years now (we didn't get together until college, long distance) and it can be challenging sometimes because of our different mental health challenges and just generally growing up. And not being in physical proximity for most of the year. I worry a lot about bringing so much negativity into their sphere due to my mental illnesses, especially in the short time we do get to be in physical proximity with each other. But I'm trying to be proactive, leaning on other branches of my support system, checking in often with my partner's needs too. This video gives me hope

Me and my husband aren’t high school sweethearts, but started dating when we were 19 (so, close enough). After the first eleven years, we hit that patch that you’re talking about. Like, is this really my person, or is this just the only person I’ve had? So, we took a break. After 18 months, we came back together sooo much happier, calmer and stronger because now we KNEW. We’re now on year 17 (it’s our anniversary today, coincidentally) I like to say that we chose each other as teenagers, and then had choose each other as adults. Best two choices I’ve ever made.
@yuli48822 жыл бұрын
I started dating my bf when we were 16 and i will soon be turning 20. I honestly have no feeling of settling. We both have very honest conversations with eachother and i think its about knowing you choose eachother everyday. I know I could find someone else easily the same way a girl would be crazy interested in him, but we both love eachother and I know I would survive without him but if i want a life partner i really feel he is the perfect person for me. Of course i still want to keep learning and travel and all that but i feel i want to experience those things with him.
@kaitlynbyrd132 жыл бұрын
My husband and I have been together since we were 14 and 15 (now 22 y/o) and we have no feelings that we have just settled because we’re comfortable. The saying “when you know, you know” sounds so cliche but I believe you truly know when you’ve found your soul mate. Everything in life started to make sense since we started dating. A lot of people think high school sweethearts stay together because they’re scared, and I get why, but it’s WAY harder to put in the work to keep growing with each other and working through issues in the relationship than it is to be single.

I wish more married couples would have participated! I married my hs sweetheart. We met thru mutual friends but we went to diff high schools. I think the fact that we based our relationship on mostly phone conversations, and they were deep conversations, that we knew within a short time that we could possibly spend the rest of our lives together (we were only 15/16). People thought we were crazy. We went thru so many ups and downs, yet here we are so happily married for almost a decade with children and a loving home. We did everything so traditionally… dated, went to college, graduated, got married, bought a house, started a family. Faith has been a center focus of our relationship which has helped us tremendously to keep our marriage strong.

I don't think I'd be where I am today if I had dated in high school, much less found a long term boyfriend there. None of the guys in my high school were my cup of tea or they were gay. Only two couples from my graduating class stayed together (one has been together since 8th grade in 2003). The one from middle school has two kids and they just moved back to the hometown, but they also had the money to make the long-distance relationship they had in college bearable (the girl was in Spain while the guy was in NY). The other couple, is a military couple (marines veteran), stayed in our hometown and live life with no desire for kids, have a lot of cats, and they travel sometimes. Both incredibly happy couples. Actually, I forgot one. There was one more that was together from middle school (7th grade, 2002, 20 years) as well and they just married a couple years ago. It's impressive they're only early 30s and have already been together 20 years.

Wish they would differentiate between "love" and "infatuation." The lines tend to get blurred there, especially in today's culture that emphasizes that only FEELINGS matter. Feelings aren't the only, or even most important thing about real love. Feelings can come and go--hence ppl falling "in and out of so-called love"--but real love, true love, works through that. Hence things like, "for better or for worse." ;)

I’m not sure if this would be considered HS sweethearts, but my parents went to the same HS and saw each other but hung out with completely different crowds. Shortly after graduation they met and got married young at 19. Ppl would say they were too young and didn’t know what they were doing been married 29 years now about to be 30 this year in September!! Very much so still in love. This might be an interesting perspective, but although my parents never pressured me to get married young it does feel odd to get past the age your parents got married and still be unwed/ single. Not necessarily even though I've never dated before. But if you have a nostalgic personality and if you start catching up with someone you didn't know well from high school and they're also nostalgic about high-school a friendship / relationship can definitely blossom out of that

Y'all should do "kids raised with both parents vs raised with one parent". Being raised with only one parent it would be interesting to see the differences.

@@lisagriffin8221 omg, 18 hours is even worse. 😳 We mostly talk in my (Germany) evening hours, which are her (Canada) morning hours. She works mostly in the evening so it works out for us really well. That might change soon but we'll make it work anyway - and obviously there are always the weekends! It's so nice to hear from others in similar situations! 😊 How long have you been together?

6:29 i think this sums up perfectly. choosing to be in a relationship is the real deal because sometimes life happens and priorities change, but you have to evaluate if that still makes sense to you and you want to keep that person in your life and what both parties have to comprise to make that possible

The rough patches can be very hard to get through, and I wish they talked about if they wished they had more partners to gain experience from. As a highschool sweetheart whos only and first partner is my current one, I feel like I could have learned from past relationships

I will never forget a story a teacher at my middle school told about 2 seventh grade students he had that got into a relationship. He was happy for them but he didn’t really think they’d stay together because yknow, middle school. Then, like ten years later, he met the two of them, still together, off in different colleges, one oversee about to get married

Im not with my high school sweetheart anymore but we are still very much connected. We were friends as kids, lost our virginity to each other. Other people come and go but our friendship is non negotiable. I think first love can have a really special power. Happy these people seem to have been able to keep that power at the center of their lives.

Darn 4 here and 4 in heaven. I felt both her joy and pain, joy for the ones that are here and gave her the opportunity to be a mom, grandmother and mother-in-law but pain for the ones she lost who she will never get to nurture and see grow.
