I feel like the racism topic flew over rihno head. A lot of people surround theirselves within their own group of people simply because they could relate to them more or both share the same culture or life experiences. It’s not them saying “I don’t want to be around white people” And ofc some people would want to be around their own then white people because trauma from racism has passed down from many different generations. Making more poc feel uneasy if they aren’t within their own people. I personally don’t have a problem with people wanting to stick within their own group of people when it comes to dating and like being in a certain activity group.

I like how Rob tries to see it from everyone's perspective and see where they're coming from. I dont think the girl meant she can only be around black ppl, but like her sorority might be the only place where she is surrounded by ppl she can relate to uniquely. Not saying u cant relate to ppl of diff races, but its kinda like being in a foreign country and then meeting someone from ur own country. It's that kind of unspoken familiarity almost. It's not that other ppl can't join, it's that it's just odd if I see all the different sororities and only go for the one with just Chinese ppl for example. For me it only becomes a problem if u can SOLEY be friends w ppl of ur won race. But like just having a group of ppl u can relate to is ok

I joined a predominantly white sorority and I regret it. I didn’t plan on joining one at all but all the friends I made were joining one. It was racist and It was awful for me.I hated having to be “perfect” all the time because no matter where you are, you have to be a “ representative” of their community. It’s not real. It's not about getting on with black people more or less, tbh it is just a different feeling. There is a reason we as people naturally don't flock to multi cultural/racial relationships. It is a similar concept. We naturally want to be in spaces we feel closer to, and that is, of course, our race and / or culture. I don't think it is wrong for black people to want said space, as spaces for others already exist.

Throughout this whole video, Rihno projected his disinterest in what the two black women and the Latina woman had to say. He truly believes that debunking and disagreeing with POC will get him a seat next to the white people. Never once did he correct the white girl. He, in fact, deliberately overlooked the white girl when she was talking about having a POC in their BEDI chair. Are we as POC not allowed to have people who look like us in our space when, for so long, white people have been allowed to create countless spaces and communities that not only help their own but benefit them too? For some reason, when POC (especially black people) create safe spaces exclusively for their people, we are segregating, discriminating, and being racist towards our white counterparts. How can black people segregate, discriminate, and be racist towards the same people who did the same to us from 1865-1964 (civil rights movement). We had and still have to fight for our place in America.

I think the “black safe space” is completely valid if you don’t want to be in an all black sorority as a black person that’s completely fine. A lot of black people have bad experiences being in predominantly white spaces who show micro aggressions m, like sororities, so for them to seek out a place where they feel like they belong is not wrong at all. I would also question if I was in an all black sorority and a white girl wanted to join when they were a million other sororities on campus so they could’ve joined. 12:05 I think the two black girls clearly probably go to an HBCU so it’s going to be more likely that it’s going to be more homogenous. I remember when I was in college I went to a pretty diverse college, and I had almost joined a cult because that’s what they are but I didnt join a cult. My mom is in a sorority and she went to an HBCU so it was going to be a predominantly black sorority. Also, it depends on where you grow up to like I’m from New York City. I grew up in a very diverse lifestyle, but if you grew up in a predominantly white neighborhood are predominantly black neighborhood or homogenous of one certain culture you’re going to be more likely to want to be with your own kind.

Especially when in other spaces POCs are discriminated against; as the people in the original video all agreed that there was a certain degree of racism in these spaces with a lot of ignorant people. That being said, it makes sense for POCs to make spaces or go to spaces where they feel accepted and lean away from spaces they have to fit the mould of the token person or experience micro aggressions or have to code switch/look a certain way to fit in. They would go to a space with common experiences (being already the minority) where they fit in. And the other girl already proved that some sororities have biases ‘blonde and skinny’ so it’s really about going into a group where you feel accepted and don’t have to fit in a box or tolerate ignorance.

These schools and sororities you speak of poorly that that woman has joined have a lot of real history and context to them. they are highly important to black history, culture, and community and its okay if it doesn’t resonate with you, just don’t be ignorant and oblivious to someone else and their experiences/ choices.

9:00 Just as a member of the D9, she's mostly referring to how D9 orgs. had to be created due to the prejudices attached to frats and sororities back in the day, so when she says "we mostly stick to our own" its due to that history. Though, as she somewhat mentions, there are a variety of racial backgrounds within the d9, just predominately black--due to what I mentioned above. I will acknowledge that there are some elitists within the D9, but I'd argue there are just as many or even more within "white" organizations.

I think he was trying to say wanting only black people and not feeling comfortable with other races, isolating them and finding it weird that other races wants to join isn’t right ( hypocritical in my opinion considering black history). I think it’s wrong because the color shouldn’t define whether or not you should be with someone but their personalities. I think I get your point by saying you feel more comfortable with your race maybe because of a culture understanding or not but just because of that others shouldn’t be excluded. For me our ancestors shouldn’t of complained for us not being amalgamate if we’re just gonna do the same but in the way "if you don’t understand my culture pain you ain’t accepted" horrible exemple. I think it's also different because most of the POCs in this episode are not biracial and they may have a different experience than someone who is. Not trying to spread hate but white people generally have less stigmas towards those who are biracial. Colorism is real and I think they're saying "safe space" because there are more people who look like them in their sororities and have gone through the same experiences. Especially at predominately white institutions it's important to have extracurriculars where people of color can be together.

That Squidward analogy was actually such a solid primary source. My thesis in NYU was about multimedia, but I discussed multiculturism vs fusionculturism quite a bit. As a Puerto Rican, Cuban, Miami Hispanic (white/brown, I honestly don’t even know), I believe it’s better to fuse cultures than to just have them all next to each other. Hispanics are actually predicted to be the main ethnic group in America soon because of this, and I think that’s pretty cool. The more we fuse, the more we're tolerant of other cultures, and the closer we'll get to world peace. I know that sounds UNREALISTICALLY optimistic, but it’s actually kind of true. I think America is predicted to consist mostly of "mixed minorities" in a few years. It probably does already, to be honest. I don’t know… I think that’s pretty cool.
