The Janssens's can try to eat their status for all I care. I'm Dutch, and I think we value diploma's and education way more than we value money and objects. A professor can (and often is) broke as fudge, but we'll look up to him, because we think he's smart. Not sure if status is much of a bonus over here though. We suck at hierarchy, so we will often question authority right to it's face (and mock it behind it's back).

Yes, but that is to assume the relationship we have with money and work and society. I am talking about keeping up with the joneses. I think, that most people, want to go on holiday, not because of the money or status, but so they have something to talk about. Like a toned down version of keeping up with the joneses. It is different for everyone, but if people went on holiday, they usually say where they went, but you never hear a Dutch person say, I got the newest Sony or LG TV. Somehow, the holiday is mentioned, but the brand of TV is not. The experience is more important then the objective truth. That is how I see it. It is all how it looks, not about the money. @@laravds9801

If you live in Haarlem your tap water is probably coming from the dune area west and north of Castricum maintained by the water company. Go visit and bike that area and you’ll see what the water is like where it is processed. Crystal clear before it will be filtered naturally for quite some time by the sand in that area before it gets used for drinking water out of the tap.

My father used to work for PWN with his own project management office in the company. So I have been to most water purification sites in North Holland. Austria, Finland, Greece, Iceland, Ireland, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom are tied for the top spot, boasting the cleanest water in the world. The reason the Netherlands has such clean drinking water is mainly because of advanced technology. Netherlands was one of the first countries to use UV lights to clean drinking water. I have been to the Andijk inlet, where they have huge UV installations to get the smallest particals out of the water. Including residue of medicines. Another technique used very early in the Netherlands is reversed osmosis. There is a plant in Heemskerk that cleand the water this way for North Holland. (Except Amsterdam because they have their own water provider) Near Haarlem there are the Kennemerduinen where water is purified by nature first before the other steps are done. Amsterdam has the AWD (Amsterdam Water Dunes) near Zandvoort that does the same. Both nice areas to take a walk in. The Hague and surroundings also use the Dunes as the first step, and the rest of the country mainly uses ground water. I feel the fact we have very strong laws regarding water quality has made us be in the top 5 worldwide.

The health and vitality thing is definitely due to the overall lifestyle. Walking, cycling, popping into the supermarket on the way home, some form of proper, structured exercise like gym, tennis, football, yoga, etc. Eating decent food. All these things are normal to Dutchies, and begets a decent self care regimen too. Its a total package. Edit: grammar

You are correct about the water. I am a retired soldier living in Europe and come to Haarlem about three times a year. There is no other country in Europe I drink tap water. All of the things you say about the people looking fit is also what I noticed. I suppose it's because people are walking or biking and not driving everywhere they go. I always come to Haarlem for my stays. I have been to a lot of cities in Europe and Haarlem is the only one that I keep returning to.😊

Hey Sky, about us looking good and healthy...my thoughts is that it is all the little things added up that you have mentioned in your videos; the good quality water (drinking water that has a smell and tastes like chlorine is NOT healthy), the quality of the food, not having to keep up with the Jones´, work/social/relaxing time in good proportions, biking, walking, being outside a lot, etc. It´s the lifestyle! Of course we have our stressors, but I think it is not comparible to the US. Just my opinion! The plumber and health care worker (kraamverzorgster) looking like models was hilarious! I think they are not representative of the sector as a whole 🤣🤣🤣Lots of plumbers with beer bellies and healtcare workers looking like nurse Ratched!😂

@04:03 Water quality. I remember that in the 60s and 70s the natural water outside in rivers, canals and in many other places was gross and heavily polluted. The Rhine and the Meuse, the two major rivers that flow through the Netherlands, were largely polluted before they entered the country (and yes, here too, by us). Polluted by industry and just sewage that was dumped into it. The nickname for the Rhine was "the sewer of Europe". Cleaning it for drinking water was a big job. In those days, chlorinating the water was a necessity. Living in a place where the water could be pumped from great depths was a blessing, and certainly not common. Making agreements (via European legislation) improved the quality of the surface water enormously. In the meantime, the Dutch government has also spent a lot of money on drinking water purification plants and technology. This is an ongoing process. Sewage purification has also been standard for years. After purification, the water is discharged into rivers. This discharged water is on average of better quality than tap water in many other countries.👴😁

The drinking water in the whole of the Netherlands is very good. But it differs per city. Haarlem and The Hague use filtered dune water, for example, which is why large parts of the dune are not accessible. In other places they use ground water or spring water. And in the South (Limburg) there is clearly much more lime in the water. I personally find the tap water in Apeldoorn very tasty, this is spring water. Small bonus fact, the Dutch Coca-Cola factory, where Aquarius, Sprite & Chaudfontaine also come from, is located in Dongen and also uses spring water. So it is a luxury type of Cola here 😊

Every time I visit the us I’m appalled by the water. It smells so much like chloride that I feel like I just got out of the swimming pool after taking a shower. This is also the reason I always ask for no ice in my drink cause the chloride from the melting cubes will just take over your entire drink otherwise. I guess you get used to it if you live there and don’t smell/taste it as much maybe but as a visitor it’s truly awful.

Even things like vegetarian or vegan) contribute to that. You see it not only with people's shape or tired looks, but also their skin, hair, shine in their eyes etc. Also, your plumber might actually be a model on the side ;) We have time for hobbies here. And they can include modelling 😊 (These would be interesting things to discuss if I ever bump into you in Haarlem).

A lot of the differences regarding water is the treatment. The US treatment plants are allowed to add certain disinfectants and fluoride. THese are not added in Dutch treatment plants. Also the water itself might have slightly different properties like ph and sulfur content and such (which might account for that smell you talked about. the USA has volcanic areas, the Netherlands has not for example). It kind of depends on which "rankings" or "study" you read but the top 10 in the world seems to be Austria, Switserland, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, the Netherands, Ireland, Malta, Iceland and Finland. Austria and Switserland often on top, the rest in changing order. Sometimes Malta and Iceland are replaced for the UK and Germany. 12:30 Also a thing in the Netherlands. You can actually say people look good without people thinking you want to do the adult stuff with them. Dutch directness, if someone looks great, it is ok to say they look great. It is not what you say, it is how you say it.

Some remarks about differences in drinking water … Where I live Vitens is the water supplier. It is a N.V. But its shareholders are towns and provinces. This is usual, not privatized like e.g. in the U.K. Their shareholders enjoyed great benefits, ‘not so much’ their consumers and society in general. According to recent news reports. We are probably spoiled here, even compared to the rest of NL, because our “cheap” Vitens-tapwater comes from the Heuvelrug. Basically the same high quality source from where Sourcy is bottled by PepsiCo (Bunnik). Main difference is in price per bottle or per 1000 liter. I did not fully appreciate that until I worked in Minneapolis for 2 months. The tapwater was safe to drink, but contained chlorine. The locals were used to it, I guess. Some places even used tapwater for ice cubes in already nearly freezing drinks. A glass is filled with ice and topped with some drops of cola. The result tastes and smells like a swimming pool, both going in and coming out. When we found bottled water on sale, we filled our car with it. We needed that for drinking, making coffee, cooking etc. Also because it was on sale, and we Dutch love a bargain. I was told that chlorine was not even necessary, but an extra, Minnesota has good water. Not surprising to me as the state was like Finland (just forests and lakes).

10:21 Interesting observations. I believe the comparatively weak public (and very strong for profit private) sector in the US has gradually turned US citizens into consumers and almost all decisions into financial ones. Some of this has happened here as well, but to a much lesser extent. I believe that people in the Netherlands are still primarily citizens with a role in society and that being a consumer in a capitalist economy comes second.

Where I live (between Leiden & Den Haag), not every household, let alone person, owns a car. During the rush-hour, it is often it is faster to take public transport than to drive.... buses often have special bus lanes and don't always get caught in traffic. People do have driving licenses, but don't feel the need to own a vehicle. I know of many who use the 'Green Wheels' scheme when they need to use a vehicle..... you can hire a car or a van at a railway station and only pay for km driven and number of hrs hired (you don't have to refill the tank or charge the battery yourself) and you can hire it for as little as 2hrs without having to pay for a whole days hire!

Hi, just a small question, would it be something to carry an umbrella if you go outside 😅 since the rain is coming and going. I'm surprised I never see you with an umbrella in your videos 🤭 you could still vlog and walk, 1 hand umbrella, other hand camera 😋

Public transport may be ok in De Randstad but outside it is pretty terrible. In the rural areas trains are cancelled and busses may or may not show up. SInce there is this decline lines do not wait for eachother as they used to, now they need to make it to destination otherwise you miss the next train/bus or boat.

Tbh, we do flex here in the Netherlands, but in the complete opposite way than the US. Instead of flexing about how expensive something was, we'll flex how cheap something was. If you wanna impress a Dutch person, you wanna talk about a great deal you got, especially on products that are usually more on the pricey side. We love a good bargain. You got a really cool shirt for 5€? Every time you get a compliment on that shirt, you get bragging rights.

iirc water is filtered and mixed with additives in the processing plant. But in the USA, some additives like chlorine are allowed to be a little higher - because it also depends on what system you are piping it into. And the amount of additives depend on the polluted water you start with. Bottled water can be better - but sunlight leaks additives from the plastic into the water, as also happens if you drink a multi year old bottle... Distilled water (100% water without contaminants) is disgusting though... Ironically what makes water good, for example spring water - is that little bit of salt/rock that comes up with the spring water.

The only people who like to show their ''status'' are narcissists 😄, for the rest it doesn't matter much to the average Dutch person, we are a down-to-earth people. If you have a job and you can spend it it's fun, and then you can show what you have achieved and that you are proud of it because you worked for it. I myself have been in a dire situation for years and now have a good income, and have done everything to clean up and show friends/family what I have achieved and how proud I am of it.....despite some things I am really happy that I am 100% Dutch and that it is possible to get out of trouble (even if it is with help)

Let's try to solve this "getting ambushed by the rain" problem already. In short: - You can't choose when to go out so knowing when it rains won't matter - You need to hold your camera - The camera needs to stay dry Looks like a backpack umbrella holder is the way to go for you.

It's always a good thing for me as a Dutch person to hear the perspective on things I take for granted. Unfortunately this healthy country is declining. Obesity is growing. I hope we can stop this evolution and re-adapt the good things.

It's not only that Dutch people look healthier, in general they are more handsome and prettier than people in a lot of other countries. Same counts for the people of Denmark, Norway and Sweden. It may sound like a generalisation, but I have travelled the world enough to see the differences.

You must love a lot of wind and rain, don't forget your taxes and high rent. The rest is OK in my eyes. The drinking water in sandy areas is the best, like dunes at the coast, the Veluwe or parts of Limburg. The size of the sandgrain allows some oxygen to do some biological filtering and releases some minerals you "taste", like mineral water Sourcy that is sourced on the Hoge Veluwe, near Utrecht. Drinking water from river/lake sources is different, the taste and quality depends on the inlet water polution.

There are a lot of beautiful people here. There's also a saying: you can get hungry all day long, as long as you'll come home to eat..... 😉 About keeping up with the Jones's ... Most of us really don't care what other people have. Some like to brag though ... about how cheap they'd bought something. I know some people that - I guess - have a good income, because they live in a house mine can be the shed in the back of the garden, but we never talk about that. We talk about birds (we're both bird watchers) and where we could find some special ones. Or about some drink we had.

About the quality of water...the water tastes different in different parts of the Netherlands. It depends if the water is taken and clarified from the dunes, the coastal water, the rivers, the woodland water or the groundwater. To clear the water and make it drinkable we have a good system of clarification and the water is being controlled again and again before it is being made availlable at home!! Good quality water, good quality food, good work/life ballance are contributing to a healthier life, thus people here tend to look better then, as you say , back in the states. We do not have to stress too much about the primary means of life, or keeping up with the Jonesses. But I want to compliment you about you're saying healthcare is NOT free. We have to pay our monthly healthcare bill wich covers a lott of healthcare treatments. But it is NOT free. I sometimes think people in the US think that it's all for free healthcare here in Europe or in the Netherlands

America has a lot of processed foods and you have ingredients in that processed food that are band in Europe. So yes we look healthier because our (not just the Dutch, but the European) food is healthier. And as somebody who has travel a lot. Yep as a whole the Dutch are an attractive nation.

You don't have to apologize every time, if people feels or thinks, this is a diss track against the Netherlands or the USA. People just need to understand, that no country is perfect . And that one has better things than the other. They just don't see the things, you are showing in this video. It's because of their patriotic or chauvinistic feelings. Keep on making these good videos. People are too fast offended.

Been to the States a couple of times. And tbh, I think your foodculture just makes your people sick. WAY to large portions, filled with sugars and the wrong fat's. a lot of people eat constantly outdoors w're we cook most of the time. On top of that you guys use the car for anything. Even if its just a 5 min walk. We bike if we can and only when we need the car we take the car. Another reason might be that we "work to live" and not "live to work" as I have the feeling that thats the general concencus is in the States. So those 3 things make us maybe live a healthier life then across the big pond? Love your channel, keep up the good work!

American water has Chlorine & Fluoride in it. It also contains traces of all kind of medicines because Americans flush them down the drain/toilet, and it breaks down and can't get filtered out. Could also be the case in the Netherlands.

You say that you think the Dutch look healthier. It is partly due to the food we eat. Many people here eat the traditional food. That is bread or dairy products such as yogurt in the morning. And then many people eat vegetables, potatoes, and meat in the evening. In addition, many people eat fruit. You also see this when you enter the supermarket. The first things you come across are the fruit and vegetables, the bread section, and the dairy products. In addition, many people in the Netherlands practice sports such as fitness, running, cycling, etc. on a daily or weekly basis. This all keeps us healthy and fit 😉
