Do ammonia engines stand a chance?

Ammonia engines are said to produce up to 90% less CO2 emissions than regular combustion engines! But when you look at the burning process and production: is it really a climate-friendly engine at all?

To add to the problems in the video: we have a severe problem in the Netherlands with nitrogen deposition. Basically, nitrogen compounds act as fertilizer in nitrogen-poor nature reserves, allowing nitrogen hungry plants to overgrow the otherwise diverse ecosystem. In other words: unless the only nitrogen it emits is in the form of N2, I doubt this'll be the answer.

Who cares. We need jobs and housing and better healthcare. Who cares about plants? Humans first.

And we need to polder the wieringerwaard. Build an airport to decongest schiphol. Then build housing and industry there. Who cares about the fishes and the plants. We need jobs

@@anthonygreenfield123Luckly not everyone thinks the way you do or i do so we will still find solutions in the end while you keep screaming for more jobs and industry while AI is taking more and more jobs from humans anyway😅. Alright im out i have a life to live and i guess you have one too. Cheers!

Yeah...burning ammonia can also release N2O - that's not good.🙄 We also did a whole video on nitrous oxide you can watch here 👉 kzbin.info/www/bejne/amike6iXjrWpgKs. Please check it out and leave us a comment!

Burning Ammonia creates H2O and N2. I know it was meant to be understand easily, but I wanted to make this more clear, since it isnt hard to understand at all I think. Those NOX molecules get also created with combustion, but you can minimize them with catalysts like in ICE. Still I dont see currently why this should win the race vs H2/BEV or E-fuels/Biofuels.

This may be the case in the perfect world of stechiometry. However, in the real world, burning ammonia or any other nitrogen compound will end up producing some nitrogen oxide like no2 and no3 etc...
@BackYardScience2000
@BackYardScience2000 6 ай бұрын
Sadly, as the previous commenter said, this isn't a perfect world, so much, much more than just water and nitrogen are produced. Even with catalysts. Yeah, you can make it produce less of the gases, but you can't make them all go away completely. No matter how hard that you try. I would be more concerned, however, about how you'd refuel such a car without putting everyone and everything around you in danger. Have you seen what ammonia burns can do to someone? It's also extremely toxic. This is an absolutely dumb idea....
@enesince6329
@enesince6329 6 ай бұрын
@@fedang yeah like in ICE. But in ICE the catalyst turns the unwanted nitrogen molecules back to N2. But Idk how these catalysts work with a engine fully running with ammonia. The effectivity of the catalyst would have to be way higher I guess.
@fedang
@fedang 6 ай бұрын
@@enesince6329 I mean, that's how they are supposed to work. There is no perfect catalyst. The problem with nitrogen compound also came up with diesel engines, and they produce way less of them.

H2 is very difficult to handle in large scale, let say tanker/container ship. H2 is the lightest and least viscous gas which makes it so easy to leak

Whether ammonia or hydrogen... These are not sources of energy they are carriers of energy just like electricity is. For vehicles, it is just more practical to use electric energy to power a battery than to use that same energy to make a carrier of energy that has to be physically transported.

the engine doesn't burn the ammonia, it splits it up into it's baser elements, hydrogen and nitrogen.

Not saying this engine makes any sense, but global electricity generation also heavily relies on fossil fuels.
@BackYardScience2000
@BackYardScience2000 6 ай бұрын
It doesn't have to, though. Nuclear alone could easily replace all fossil fuels used in the production of electricity..... If everyone would stop being so scared by it from all of the fear mongering campaigns the fossil fuels companies produced over the years along with all the misinformation they produce.

For now, but for how long? I know the answer depends on where, but every time I comment, someone says nuclear ... well at least it's low carbon, so better than what fossil fuels Also, electric vehicles are still more efficient than ICC'S. So, there is no need to delay the transition for cars.

The engine uses a promoter of hydrogen at 3% which causes the ammonia to be burnt as quickly as petrol, so there should be none / extremely small amount of the byproducts mentioned in this short.

I think with the energy transition there is a tendency to put one technology over another. I think the approach should be more on why choose when you can have both? Yes, some technologies will be more prevalent than others, but for certain applications, one technology can work better. So even if EVs is normally the preferred options, there might be cases where an ammonia engine could be a better option.

Also, could you imagine teting to fuel up an ammonia engine? You'd have more deaths from fumes than you would from car wrecks! But also, laughing gas can react with oxygen to produce nitrogen dioxide. Which is a deadly orange gas, but also when that mixes with water it forms nitric acid, which can corrode many metals and much, much more. This is by far one of the dumbest ideas that Toyota's (or the company that created this that they have a stake in) dumbest ideas yet....

you also need huge amounts of hydrogen, derived from natural gas, to create ammonia. would be a waste to just burn it for your personal vehicle

Sure but our planet is dominated by capitalism, & until we change that, the choice of solutions we ultimately pursue will be dictated by what CEOs think will make the most money for their shareholders And even then the gains from any genuinely good solutions we do implement will still pale in comparison to the horrifically staggering levels of global pollution created by the U.S. military So I guess the tl;dr: here is that we can't invent our way out of this crisis-we need to organize & demand sweeping, radical fundamental change, and we only have about half a decade in which to do it
