I really like the double lift. I've been doing magic for about a year, but no matter how many times i use this, nobody picks up on it. I feel like its so simple, and me being a begginer you'd think I'd be really bad at fooling people. However, every time i perform I'll do a trick with this and it gets em everytime.

The Emsley count. I love it when you show 4 face down cards and then when someone taps the pack the Ace turns face up. you then continue as the 2, 3 and 4 turn face up and finally show the fifth card to be the Queen of hearts who was your assistant during the performance

This was one of the best Top Change tutorials I have seen on KZbin. Most tutorials just cover the change itself, but Jay gives a variation, plus a couple applications. I am actually thinking I would do a similar trick, but after showing the wrong Card, and then doing the top change, when I am looking baffled and trying to "search" for the correct card, I would put the actual card down during that offbeat. I would then ask the spectator to name there card, and be, honestly unable to locate their card in the deck: Even hand them the deck and ask them to search for their card. When you, or they, fail at finding their card point to the card you unsuspiciously put down just moments ago, and say to inquisitive question ("This is the only card left, do you think this could be your card"? or something) then reveal their card. Also, Chris Ramsey teaches this as a way to stop hecklers. As them the chose a card, and fail to locate it. Do the top change, and while astonished that you failed, show the card (now the actual selected card) to the other spectators, but still out of view of the heckler. Ask the heckler to state his card out loud so everyone knows that you failed, and when they name the card you showed everyone else, the heckler will be made to look a fool. Pretty awesome. As for my favorite sleight, well, all my sleights suck. But my favorite is probably the cull. So powerful because it looks so fair, and truly goes under the radar. Every motion seems like it belongs. I like it so much I use it in my Chicago Opener (Red Hot Mama) routine. I place my force card 5th from the top, and then do a cull force for the second part of the routine to get the spectator to select the 5th card. Works so smooth, but again, even my cull is not that good.. YET.

You could have them hold the "wrong" card while you're looking through the deck trying to find the right card. Then blame them for screwing up the trick: revealing they are actually holding their chosen card.

My favorite card sleight is actually the top change. How convenient! I like that it can be done on an off beat. How it can be done in seemingly full view. How you could adapt it to reveal two cards for two separate spectators. It's just so casual a fluid, I always love using it.

I like to have spectator pick a card and while shuffling it into the deck, I say it’s 43 from the top of the deck and I do this 2 more times telling them I know exactly how many from the top their card is located, finally I count down to their favorite number and their card is exactly that many from the top! I use the overhand shuffle slipping single cards to the top of the deck counting the appropriate amount of cards onto deck to put their card at their favorite number then I then in-jog a card and continue to shuffle the balance of the cards onto the deck! Then I simply get a break at the in-jogged card and cut off the cards above the jog. Then you can do false cuts and shuffles retaining the top packet of cards then finally count down to his favorite number and magically his card appears at that number! Hope this makes sense! Thanks Jay for your passion and inspiration! Your friend, Barry

I like the side steal. I probably don't do it 'right' but having come up with a method on my own to transfer a card that I (or a spectator) clearly placed upon the lower half of the deck so that it now resides at the top of the deck carries with it a pleasant nostalgic satisfaction whenever I perform it.

The glide Love this sleight and have used it for decades now. It can be done right under their noses, fully surrounded. No suspicious movement involved at all since it happens so fast. Holding the deck just above the waist, then lowering it just slightly to waist level to remove the card and the move is already done and it's all performance after that. Not once has anyone caught me doing the move. An absolute classic sleight that when used with a great effect, just blows em away every time Jay. I have dozens of various effects I use that sleight for. I remember first learning that move in an old card trick book back in the late 80s, and ever since it has stood the test of time.

I love a good ol' classic pass. Easy to practice mindlessly, so it's not hard to get smooth, and it's such an important, useful move. Similar to a doublelift in ease of practice and breadth of utility, but I love the feeling of the motion of a classic pass. Also, wanted to say I love the name and idea of "Hoodlum". Clever name and a great impetus to create it too, wanting rope magic to be less connected to stage or "classic" magic.

I love the top palm man! Not just the one handed top, but I love a beautiful two handed top palm. The action generally requires a small handful of misdirection (god i'm so proud of this pun) that works so well as a casual moment of relaxation. Its that "oh, this wasn't your card?" kind of moment that allows you to make the palm work. I think it was vernon who said something along the lines of never letting your hands come together during a routine, so its the almost "race against the clock" mentality for me, yet somehow feeling like an "all the time in the world" moment instead. I think learning this sleight is something everyone should do just to engage those social muscles of stepping out of the trick and just engaging with the audience.

I’m not a magician, but I just found your videos and I love them! So bare with me, I’m not sure what it is called. I’ve seen a video and maybe it’s a camera trick, but I’d like to think it’s not. A man(with rolled up sleeves) is dealing cards on a table and as soon as the cards touch the table them seem to instantly vanish! This trick blew my mind because I really have no idea how he did it and he did it over and over and over again! He could confidently repeat the same trick and it was still as amazing as the first card. It would be amazing to win, because the hoodie concept really appears to me as someone new to magic! There’s a lot of comments already so you might not see this, but if you do if you even told me the name of the illusion I would greatly appreciate it! Maybe you could make a video on it...

I realize that the double lift is a total beginners move but at the same time you can do SO much with it. It’s a slight that’s used in almost every trick to some degree, plus it can be an entire effect in itself. I hope I’m not being too basic but I love your videos and I just wanna get better

I would say card forces are my favorite sleights in card magic. My personal favorite is Vinny Marini's giggle force, but backslip and hindu shuffle forces are fun, too. All this just to say I still suck at classic and need to practice it a lot more.

i love the force because if you do it enough times they can catch on, and you can base an entire routine on making the audience think they caught on then, BOOM you were still several steps ahead if you make something feel like a move the there was none then the since of deception and misdirection is really strong

Oddly enough, the top change is my favorite. I'm still wondering how I keep getting away with it. Your advice was spot on. Clever, subtle misdirection. Thx jay

My favorite card slide is the one that you have two piles and turn over dive cards on one pile and than show those and sicretly put one card face up on bottom od that pile and complite the čut. This one is my favorite because it was one od my first slides and I get realy good reactions with it.

Love the Duck change. Just because something about the card changing in mid air makes it all the more magical.

I couldn't really do the switch quick enough at first so I did a double lift and then dropped the wrong card instead of the switch. Easy win! Thanks so much for the tutorial!

Center Double. So easy to get an ACR card signed in secure and natural way, and so undetectable.

For a novice, anyway, I love the spread force because it’s easy to do and clean. You can force either top or bottom card. I’m very comfortable with the top version using the intro patter as a diversion.

I know people in the magic community knock the double lift these days, but I love a good, convincing double lift. So much to be done with it and lay people don’t know what’s happening. That was an excellent tutorial. Thanks for sharing!

I cull cards the most and I like it the most because when performing they have a free choice of a card and where to put it and no matter what it ends up at the top or bottom
