Very interesting experiment. Either no bananas or 2 bananas, but the difference between those 2 is minimum. Awesome test.

That's a very useful piece of info! You've saved folks wasting bananas.

Taste is the ultimate test, so taste experiments would matter most for my gardening.

Great job! I like to watch these experiments that you do on this channel it helps me decide what to try in my garden and what’s good to skip!

That was a really interesting experiment Jordan. My neighbour worked in a commercial greenhouse and he said the once the first tomatoes start to ripen, they close the windows and vents and flood the greenhouse with Ethylene. Two days later every tomato is red and ready for shipping to the supermarkets, no flavour, but red! 😆 I have tried a plate on the counter and a bowl with a banana or two in it, and the results are similar, but not as scientific as yours. I still have about 5 still ripening as of today!

I would love to see if you really need to space tomato plants out that much or it's ok to jam more into a space. Still prune for air flow.

Nice experiment! I grow hard neck garlic and I would like to know the best time to harvest the scapes-good for the plant yet very tender scapes.

Bananas are uaually sprayed with ethylene gas (although they do produce some naturally) at the shops, just before they are put out for sale - that's why they can go from being green when you buy them, to ripening very fast. Organic Bananas have a small amount of naturally produced ethylene gas and take a lot longer to ripen. If you want to ripen up Tomatoes, you can also use ethylene gas to speed it up - but the downside is that they will also spoil faster.

I have heard that ripe apples can also do the ripening trick. Have tried & I think it works, but no detailed experiment like here.

Nice experiment. Would love to see if temperature affects ripening of those tomatoes as well. Really nice info

Very interesting and useful! What was your thinking on closing the boxes vs leaving some ventilation? Exposure to the gas? Fascinating there was only that one tomato with mold.
@MindandSoil3 ай бұрын
Yeah exactly - was thinking that would maybe help keep the ethylene gas in that area a bit more than if they were fully open. But as I discovered, not even using a banana was quite effective as well!

I would say that the bananas have no significant effect on ripening the tomatoes. Great experiment. I leave mine on the counter. Some wrinkle a bit.

I've heard you shouldn't store tomatoes in the fridge, or is that just sliced tomatoes?
@nebsun3 ай бұрын
It can affect the flavour if stored in the fridge for a long time making them bland

I have always heard of using apples as well, vice bananas. If you do it again using apples, I would recommend checking a bit more often than 7 days.
