It does work. The only problem is that every time you move, the rustling sound gets picked up by the mic. Also, it gets way too hot and uncomfortable to do any recordings more than a few seconds long. The best way is to make a blanket fort/den. Also use thicker blankets that absorb more sound.

Hey. NYC home studio guy here. My awesome little setup is in a 350 square foot studio apartment and space is right. I'd heard people talk about using a quilt over the top of your head to deaden the sound and it just sounded so silly to me and I never tried it until I saw your video or should I say heard. I just set up for an acoustic guitar track and I used mic stands to support the quilt so it's not dangling on the strings or the microphone or my hands. The difference was stunning, it really really worked. You have to spend a little bit of time setting up the quilt so that you're not interfering with play or vocals. But otherwise it's very cool.

To those who apparently don't have good speakers to listen to: This is NOT a good way of doing things. You can hear how he destroys his tone while under the blanket. It completely FUCKS UP the frequency spectrum in a major way that you cannot undo later in the mix. I tried to undo a bad case of that myself, and although I could fix 80% of the issues, even after having the track sent to a top of the line mastering house, the vocal take was pretty bad in certain frequencies, and the mastering engineers told me there was nothing that could be done to save it. Seriously, invest - if not money - then at least knowlege into your vocal booth design. This is a cool and ok way of doing things if you are doing a voice over for a school project or is doing some mumble rap on a 5 dollar condenser mic, but if you are trying to get a good vocal take with a good microphone, then please never do this, it will cause you some major amount of grief, speaking from experience :)

@airbourne145
@airbourne145 Жыл бұрын
Could you explain this?
@BojanBojovic
@BojanBojovic Жыл бұрын
@@airbourne145 I personally hate the room reverberation in my vocal recordings so I tried almost everything when I am not in the studio but somewhere where I can not control the reverberation. My first choice was this, the blanket. Then I tried some closet with clothes inside, then I recorded in my car. All those reduced the reverberation significantly, however in all cases there was a lot of comb filtering happening which is audible all the time and it sounds horrible while reverberation can be covered with some reverb. Not perfect, also the room colours your voice a lot, but it is better than comb filtering. Unfortunately there is no other solution to treated room, as it should be large enough not to create all sorts of phase issues, which vocal boots and solutions like this always give.

All the "cheap diy mic booth" videos, might end up expensive here in Denmark, like most other "cheap diy" videos, it sucks! :P I have a stationary computer and 4 budgies in the room, so can't really get away from them, for the things I'm planning, and I kinda can't build an ekstra room around my computer setup, in the middle of my apartment, haha. x'D Next step; finding a way to get the budgies to be most quiet. Possibly by stuffing the cage with parsley. Lol.

@@dav.e4410 No worries, it royaly screwed me over on a project where I had to record in a bad room and did it. 5k microphone and great voice, but not even one of the more expensive mastering houses in Europe could fix it, so I really recommend just building a really good, cuper cheap setup with thick rockwool panels you can make yourself, or rent a professional room, even if it does cost some money. The material will be out for decades once released, so better to spend a few extra quid on making it really spectacular than get under a blanket and regret it forever :)
