I think this is also the church offering better acoustics than an apartment room, but I'll try this. Not sure how I'm gonna build this blanket fort though, don't really have stands or whatever. Just trying to start out as a voice over artist and I'm broke as hell lol. But thanks for the idea, I really appreciate how to-the-point this is. Do you think I can use a phone mic for now until I have the means to invest in an actual pro mic?
@QuincyKane4 ай бұрын
Yes, if you're just getting started, a phone mic should be more than sufficient! There is a brand called "Fifine" that makes some very high quality, yet affordable microphones (like, some under $50), so they might be worth checking out. There's a lot you can do to get good results out of low budget gear, so don't automatically assume you need an expensive mic to get high quality results. There are probably other videos out there about how to get good recordings with low budget or phone mics. Now, if you're just doing voice over and not singing, you might not have to stand up while recording; so if you have some tall chairs or something, you may be able to hang some towels on them and get on your knees to be at the same level with them. You may be able to do a little thrift shopping or look on Craigslist to find something to hang your towels on that's very affordable, or maybe something that's being given away for free. Anyway, I hope this gives you some ideas, and all I can say is "don't wait"; just do the best you can with what you have, and try to do better with each project, and before you know it, you'll learn how to get high quality results!

What if your ceiling is short and can’t move I’m dying out here I feel like my voice has so many weird frequencies
@QuincyKane7 ай бұрын
If you can rig up a "towel booth" like I demonstrated in the video, but be sure to add a towel over top (which I'm not sure I showed), that would be the first step; but other than that, the best I can suggest would be to try singing while down on your knees. This would put you lower than the ceiling, but you should still be able to remain upright and sing properly; this would also mean you could make a smaller towel booth, since you won't have to cover your whole body, but just your head to your knees. Try that out and see if it helps! If you're still having issues, maybe start setting aside some money and buy a nice dynamic microphone (I know if you do some research, you can find some great sounding ones for an affordable price). And just remember, we all have to start somewhere; just do the best you can with what you have, and it'll be good enough!
@ILOVEDRAGO4 ай бұрын
1:50 Bro, no joke, the recording without the towels sounds more open, natural and just better. At least here on youtube. The towel-recording has muted the highs and added sume weird mid-bass subharmonics, that make the recording sound muddy. Thanks for the video, it confirms my decision to get rid of my vocal booth and just record in the control room.
@QuincyKane4 ай бұрын
You're not completely off; I used more coverage in this video than I do now. Now, I don't use the blankets anymore, or a roof; just a few towels around me. However, remember that the most important thing for every track is not how it sounds in solo, but how it sounds in the mix. The towels help prevent picking up any extra, unwanted noise. That recording at 1:50 would NOT work well in a mix; it's better to get a dry take. Even if the recording sounds a little more muted and warmer, it'd be a lot easier to clean it up and add brightness and reverb BACK to it, than trying to get rid of any unwanted reverb or ringing sounds from a recording that didn't use a set up like this.

To be honest, the top may not be necessary. In this video, I did record the audio with a top, but I removed it for the video so viewers could still see me. When I record my vocals today, I no longer use anything on top; I find that just a few towels around me is enough to block the major reflections, and I can still work with the recordings I get. Hope that helps!

Great video! Any tips on how to apply this for recording youtube videos? (where you can't be so closely surrounded with the towel triangle?) Just put 2 of the 3 triangle walls out of sight of the camera? Really curious if you have some ideas in this area! :)
@QuincyKane2 жыл бұрын
That's the right idea; to place some "blockers" just outside of frame. However, if you're just talking in these KZbin videos, your voice won't be as loud as when singing, and therefore, there won't be as much reflection off the surrounding walls in the room, so as long as you can get a microphone close to your mouth, the blockers might be a little over kill. It's all up to you though and depends on your situation; depending on the kind of mic you have and where it's positioned, that may be enough, but if you're still not satisfied with the audio, setting up some blockers like this could be helpful.

Sir I want to record my poetry professionally. Which mic I buy ? dynamic mic and the condenser mic. My room is not sound proof. The sound of fan also comes from outside. If I use condenser mic inside the blanket, will it be a good recording or not? I am very confused I can't understand what to do.
@QuincyKane Жыл бұрын
Well, if you were to find a quiet place to record and hang up some blankets/towels like I demonstrated in the video, you could make almost any mic work, even the mic built into your phone. You could probably find a video on KZbin about recording good audio with your phone mic. If you feel you still need to purchase a mic, I would say to go with a condenser IF you have a quiet place to record. If noise is going to be an issue, then go with a dynamic microphone. There are actually some very affordable USB microphones out there that would probably work well for your situation; here's a video I made about one mic that you might wanna check out: kzbin.info/www/bejne/iYiylIeZr7-Bq80 I hope that helps!

Does it help with crickling sounds? My room is small and has a big tv in it that I can't move...so the mic makes crickeling and alot of fuzzy sounds at some parts of recording
@QuincyKane Жыл бұрын
I'm afraid I don't know if putting up the towel booth will help with that issue; you'll have to try it out and hopefully it will! The only other suggestion I can make is for you to experiment with the "direction" the mic is facing. Sometimes, when I record my electric guitar, certain directions have louder noise than others, so I have to find the quietest position before recording; maybe it's a similar situation with your mic and tv. I think it was something to do with "frequencies" and "signals". Anyway, I hope that helps; good luck recording!

Yeah, it takes a little practice to get used to that; it's easy to be self-conscious about people hearing you sing (especially when you're working on your weaknesses), but you just gotta work with what you got. If you ever have some privacy, take advantage of that to get some vocals done, and if someone's there, just let them know you're working on vocals and do your best not to worry about what they're thinking. Little by little, you'll build up the confidence to be more comfortable singing, even if they can hear you. Good luck!

I don't have mic stands but I have bunk beds with memory foam mattresses. I notice the missing frequencies if I'm close to them do you have any recommendations for using such a setup. a decent size living room with slanted ceilings...?
@QuincyKane7 жыл бұрын
It's hard to say without seeing the room, but you could probably make a booth with your bunk bed and mattresses, and then hang towels over them. If you google "Mattress Vocal Booth", that might give you some ideas. A slanted ceiling should be fine if it's pretty high up, but if it's a low ceiling it could cause problems. If you could cover the ceiling with a towel, that should help. Also be mindful of mic placement; I like to have the height of the mic just under my nose, and then I stand about a foot away. The back of the mic will cancel out noise, so point it towards any parts of the room that might cause problems (like windows, corners, or bare walls). I hope that helps! Best of luck!

Sound advice thanks and a great voice too! What microphone do you use as I have a running battle with sibilence and am constantly trying different mics. Obviously I can use a De-Esser but it would be nice not to have to.
@QuincyKane2 жыл бұрын
Thank you; I really appreciate that! I am using the Audio Technica AT2020. I can't say I'm an "expert" on how to deal with sibilance (I don't think I've ever had huge issues with it), but here's a few tips you can try: Make sure you're using a pop filter when recording; I like to position my filter about 6 inches from the mic, and then position my mouth about 6 inches from the filter (although, I'll get closer to the filter for quieter sections). Tweak your performance; this can be tough, but try to be aware of harsh consonants and focus more on the vowels (although, there are times when you may want to be more articulate). In processing, I try to be very subtle with the De-esser on the main vocals, but if I have other supporting vocal layers, I will De-es them heavily, because it won't be noticeable in the mix and won't "compete" with the main vocals. Other than that, there's a video here of a mixer/audio producer I really like who shows his trick for dealing with harsh sibilances: kzbin.info/www/bejne/b5nSaoavrdekfqs I hope that helps!

Don't stress too much about how a voice sounds in isolation; as long as it's not overwhelmingly noticeable in a full mix, it's nothing to worry about. Of course, these vocals are unprocessed and will go through a signal chain involving eq, compression, dynamic eq, and parallel processing, so usually by the end of it, they sit just fine in the mix.

If your vocals are sounding a bit lispy, the best I can suggest is to tweak your singing technique and try to over pronounce the consonants a little bit; of course, you want to be careful that your S's aren't "too sharp", as they can stick out of the mix quite a bit and be distracting. What about using a similar setup but to record acoustic guitar? What about mic'ing a guitar amp, would a mic stand and blanket help?
@QuincyKane5 жыл бұрын
Yes, a similar setup would be ideal for acoustic guitar, especially if you're using a condenser microphone (which is typically used for vocals). Usually a dynamic microphone is used for recording guitar amps, and since dynamic mics cancel out a lot of the room sound, this method wouldn't be as critical, but I would still encourage you to do some tests recording with and without the towels to see if there's a difference.

@@QuincyKane Well I was gonna use an LDC (u67 clone) on my guitar amp as many great recordings have featured that mic on electric guitar. Also I currently just have 1 mic stand.. Is there anyway I can make this setup with just the one stand? Guessing not.. what about if I add another stand making it two? Or is 3 necessary? Also you mentioned using this set up in a high ceiling room.. I'm in a normal condo apartment.. so roof is about average height for a condo, not huge for anything. Will this method still work with normal ceilings? Also for acoustic guitar, would less damping help it sound better or will an untreated normal room have undesirable reverb no matter what?Thx and sorry for all the questions :)

Hey, thanks; that means a lot! I'm actually gonna be doing a stream this evening (6:30 PM EST) about vocal warmups and exercises for singing rock and metal; if that sounds interesting to you, feel free to come by and join the stream!

Do i really need triangle shape or its also ok to make square shape? Or triangle made it sound better?m
@QuincyKane3 жыл бұрын
Haha, I just thought the triangle shape was most practical; I'm pretty sure the shape has little impact on the sound!
@No-Pressure-Only-Results3 жыл бұрын
@@QuincyKane yeah i tjink triangle is more ok because its a cardoid mic it need the vocals to be in the center provably thats better than swuare vocals booth ?

@@No-Pressure-Only-Results You could always experiment with different shapes and see if there's any difference in sound!

What did you use to stand up the towels?

Did you see at 1:10 where I set up the mic stands? I also mentioned you can use a different kind of stand, build something out of pvc pipe, set up a clothes line, or some other kind of rig.

Would this method be good to use with a vocal shield? Like a aster halo or se?
@QuincyKane3 жыл бұрын
If you're talking about the vocal shields that attach behind the microphone, they don't do much; what's most important is to cover the sides and behind the vocalist. If you take care of that first, adding a vocal shield certainly wouldn't hurt, just know it's not gonna make the biggest difference.
@smoothg9133 жыл бұрын
@@QuincyKaneso with your method it doesn’t matter what room I’m in? cause I have a apartment that’s not treated💎
@QuincyKane3 жыл бұрын
@@smoothg913 This method minimizes the effect of the room; you'll still want to experiment with the rooms available to you to see which sounds best, but either way, you should have something usable.

what can I use instead of microphone stands ?
@QuincyKane Жыл бұрын
In the video, I suggest using a different type of stand (like a camera tripod or light stand), build something out of pvc pipe, or to set up some kind of clothes line. If your set up is near a door, you can try tossing a towel over the door. You could use tape to stick it to the wall, or try stacking chairs/benches. If you can get things set up tall enough, you could have the singer perform on their knees rather than standing. I hope that gives you some ideas! Just get creative and you'll find a way!

I have cpu noise issue .... How can I solve this while recording......
@QuincyKane4 жыл бұрын
Hmm, I'm not sure if I'm knowledgable enough to help with that problem, but I can try. Could you give me a little more info, please? What computer are you using? What kind of interface? Microphone? Cables? Is the noise only while recording or all the time? Does it come from monitors and/or headphones? What does the noise sound like?

@@QuincyKane I'm pretty sure he meant he has a "PSU" noise issue. Also thanks for the video🙏, gonna try this in my room🙂🤙

Some say you need bass traps though.
@QuincyKane4 жыл бұрын
Bass traps may be ideal, but lacking them isn't gonna keep you from being able to get some solid vocal recordings. Here's a song I recorded using this method; you can decide for yourself how effective it is: kzbin.info/www/bejne/qnmlY2Oah7R5a5o

I hope you find a solution; you could always ask your mother and try to find a time that wouldn't bother her. And if you have a phone or a computer, usually it has a mic built in, so you could start with that!

@QuincyKane10 ай бұрын
This is a valid suggestion; I think I would prefer an AT2020 on my voice over an SM57, which is why some "room dampening" would be required, but I haven't messed with an SM57 in a long time and I've gained more experience since then, so maybe I could get good results out of it.
